Nokia’s CEO Plans For Windows Phone To Hit 10% Market Share By Going After Blackberry’s Customers

Nokias CEO Plans For Windows Phone To Hit 10% Market Share By Going After Blackberrys CustomersSo we recently reported that according to a Kantar World Panel report, Windows Phone is sitting at 4.7% market share in the smartphone operating system market for the US. Considering that Nokia has pretty much put all their proverbial eggs into the Windows Phone basket, we guess we’re not surprised to hear the Finnish company’s CEO, Stephen Elop, reveal that their short term goal for Windows Phone would be for it to hit the double digit mark. Speaking to The Guardian, Elop was quoted as saying, “When we think about the milestones along this journey we are very focused on first getting to a double-digit market share, talking about Windows Phone collectively.”

The plan to reach that goal involves going after some of Blackberry’s 80 million customers, but he did state that this would mean big changes, especially to Blackberry’s corporate customers who might lose their investment in Blackberry’s BES system if they were to make the jump to another platform, such as Windows Phone. Unfortunately Elop did not state how long he thought Windows Phone would take to hit the double digit mark, but hopefully soon rather than later. What do you guys think? How long do you think it will take for Windows Phone to hit 10% market share globally?

Microsoft’s Windows Phone Platform Gains Market Share In the US, Android Now Commands Over 50%

Microsofts Windows Phone Platform Gains Market Share In the US, Android Now Commands Over 50%Everyone knows that Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are two of the largest mobile operating systems currently available, with companies such as Microsoft and Blackberry trailing behind with their respective products. However in a recently released report by Kantar World Panel, their figures are showing that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform is currently gaining market share and sits at 4.1%, an increase from 2012 which saw it at 2.7%, making it third in the smartphone operating system market. Blackberry (formerly known as RIM) is at 0.7%, although we’re not sure if Kantar is measuring the older Blackberry platform, or if they have combined it with Blackberry 10 as well.

iOS has also slipped from first place to 43.5%, while Android now commands over half the market share at 51.2%. It should be noted that these figures are based in the US and we expect that other countries will have different numbers, but in the meantime what do you guys make of this? Anyone surprised by these numbers or did you already see it coming?

Ex-Windows Phone GM joins the Amazon team

Amazon has just hired the ex-General Manager of Windows Phone to work on a “secret” project. Charlie Kindel left Microsoft back in August of 2011 after working there for 21 years. He left Microsoft in order to launch his own startup, BizLogr. While he will still be the founder and owner of the startup, Kindel will hand over the reigns to the startup’s co-founder, Stefan Negritoiu, so that he can dedicate all his time to Amazon’s new project.

Ex-Windows Phone GM joins the Amazon team

Kindel is unable to divulge any information regarding the project nor his current position at Amazon, but he states that the project has extreme potential. He stated to GeekWire that it was an opportunity that he could not refuse, and that “the idea that I can work in such a principled and customer focused company is really exciting to me.” There are a few speculations about what Kindel’s new project may be.

Many speculate that Amazon hired Kindel to work on its potential Smartphone device. It believes that Kindel has invaluable experience in the mobile sector of the technology business that can help them create a stand-out device. The Amazon smartphone is rumored to be revealed next year, giving Kindel enough time to mark out development plans for the device. With Kindel’s knowledge and Amazon’s huge user base of Kindle Fire users, they may be able to shell out a great, affordable device.

Of course, if he isn’t working on the Amazon smartphone, there are still plenty of other services that Amazon is working on. Amazon is supposedly working on a music subscription service. They’re working on a ton of original video content, with them just releasing the series “Betas” earlier last week, and they have a bunch of acquisitions in tow that they may modify in the near future. We should find out what Kindel will be doing with Amazon soon, so stay tuned to SlashGear for the info.

Android And Windows Phone Gain, BlackBerry Loses In Smartphone OS Share According To Kantar

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 9.26.37 AM

The big winners in the three-month period ending in February in terms of smartphone share globally and in the U.S. were Android and Windows Phone, according to Kantar Worldpanel, with BlackBerry experiencing significant declines in consumer interest and iOS remaining fairly level in most markets. The bad news for BlackBerry is that it saw its smartphone OS share decline even in the U.K., where it launched BB10 and its new hardware at the end of January.

Windows Phone isn’t really posing a threat to iOS or Android, which continue to dominate smartphone share is all markets, but it is starting to pull away from BlackBerry and Symbian when it comes to making a strong showing as a third place contender. In the U.S., Windows accounted for 4.1 percent of smartphone sales in the three-month period ending February 2013, up from 2.7 percent for the year-ago quarter. BlackBerry, by contrast, represented only 0.7 percent of smartphone sales in the U.S. according to Kantar, down from 3.6 percent during the same time in 2012.

In the U.K., BlackBerry slid from 16.8 percent of all smartphone sales in the three-month period ending in February last year, to just 5.1 percent of sales for the same span in 2013. That’s a drop of 11.u7 percentage points, during a period that included a full month of BB10 device sales. BlackBerry itself claimed 1 million devices shipped for its most recent fiscal quarter, which included BB10 launches in Canada and the U.K., but when pressed about how much of that represented actual sales, execs hedged and noted that it was “sort of” closer to between two-thirds and three-quarters of that 1 million figure on its investor conference call.

Android’s performance has likewise been strong, with big increases in many markets, including Great Britain, Germany, and Mexico. And while iOS remains relatively stable, with either small slides or gains across the board, it isn’t losing significant ground to the competition in any market: Android is eating space given up by legacy players like Symbian, which in most cases is dropping share quicker than BlackBerry. BlackBerry has the most to lose, however, since Symbian is no longer being actively developed. We’ll see if the gradual worldwide rollout of BB10 can reverse some of the losses being reported by Kantar in the coming months.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Gets New Firmware Update

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Gets New Firmware UpdateIt was just yesterday that folks who are rocking to the Nokia Lumia 920 flagship device from the Finnish smartphone company on AT&T were on the receiving end of a totally new firmware update, and it does seem as though this particular firmware update would form the basis of future updates for other Lumia devices, which carries with it its fair share of changes, especially for the display time-out that can be found under Settings > Lock Screen.

Right now, select users on a few Windows Phone devices can choose from the following quartet – 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes and 5 minutes. This particular choice would determine just how long your device will remain idle before the smartphone’s display powers off, and with the 1308 firmware from AT&T, there are new timing options, including 15 minutes, 30 minutes and the grand daddy of them all – Never. Not too sure who would choose Never, but you can’t quite tell from what the masses think, can you? I suppose that would come handy if you happen to love watching movies on your smartphone all the time.

New Evernote For Windows Phone Version Now Available

New Evernote For Windows Phone Version Now AvailableIt was just a couple of days ago when we heard that Evernote announced Evernote 5 for Android, so where does that leave us folks who prefer to side with the Windows Phone platform? Well, version 3.0 of Evernote for Windows Phone is now available, and it certainly brings with it a slew of changes not to be trifled with. After all, Evernote CTO Dave Engberg did mention in the past that the average revenue, per user, from its Windows Phone users was actually more than the larger Android user base.

One of the new features would be Shortcuts, letting users jump to any frequently accessed note, notebook or log in a jiffy. Creating a shortcut is as simple as making a long tap on any of those items, where said shortcut will then appear on the Home Screen. These shortcuts can sync across platforms, as they are available on Mac, Android and Windows Phone, so that all shortcuts created on a certain platform too, will appear on the other platforms – how neat is that? Other features include a tag list, the creation and editing of checkboxes, Notebook Stacks, and premium Evernote users have the advantage of accessing Document Search in the Windows Phone app. Go on, give it a go and let us know how your experience is like!

Evernote for Windows Phone updates with redesign, improved tags, and more

Windows Phone users who are yearning for a better Evernote experience on their mobile devices are now in luck. The app just received a major update today that comes with a complete redesign, as well as a slew of new features, including improved tag lists, stack support, and a more user-friendly interface.

wp_home

The home screen has been redesigned in a way that gives you quick access to the features you’ll most likely need when you boot up the app, including creating a new note and searching through notes. The home screen redesign also includes a small button at the top of the screen that quickly gives you access to your account information.

The update also includes shortcuts, which let you quickly jump to anything in your note collection that you access most frequently. All you have to do is long tap on any item and it will then appear on the home screen of the Evernote app. Currently, shortcuts are only available on OS X, Android, and Windows Phone, and they also sync across platforms.

wp_tags

As for the improved tag system, it’s a lot more compact this time around, which allows you to see more tags on the screen without scrolling up or down. Furthermore, the update includes a quick way for you to jump to tags by the letter they begin with. It cuts down on the amount of scrolling you have to do, and it’s a quicker way to jump to the tag you need.

The update also brings Evernote’s Document Search, which is actually a feature only for Premium users, but it’s available for free to Windows Phone users. It indexes any attached Microsoft Word, iWork, or OpenOffice files so that documents show up in your search results. Other than that, the new update includes Notebook Stacks support, checklist support, and a handful of bugfixes and general performance improvements. Evernote is a free download, and the update is available now in the Windows Phone store.

Temple Run hits Windows Phone today!

This week at the Game Developer’s Conference 2013 it’s been announced that a variety of new titles will be coming to Windows Phone 8, including the highly popular Temple Run. When it comes to the mobile app ecosystem, there are a few kings and queens and a whole lot of lesser titles – Temple Run is one of the gods. When the original Temple Run was pushed to Android, it’d already been one of the hottest-selling games on iOS for several months, exploding then onto Google’s mobile OS like a flash of lightning.

When this app comes to Windows Phone devices, you’ll find slightly less of a flash, but a flash nonetheless. The developers behind the app, Imangi, have made it clear that they’ll be releasing this app to Windows Phone devices soon and very soon – we’ll see exactly when just a bit sooner! In addition to this title, several other games have been revealed to be coming to Microsoft’s mobile OS rather rapidly.

The rest of the list goes like this: 6th Planet, Orcs Must Survive, Flight Theory, Ruzzle, Propel Man, Drift Mania Championship – and more! We’ll be taking a peek at each of them this week to see how fabulous they really are. Meanwhile be sure to let us know if you’ve found any of them to be particularly excellent!

Below you’ll see a brief hands-on video with the original Temple Run game for Android courtesy of our pals at Android Community. This game is essentially the same as the one you’ll be downloading for Windows Phone today, controls and all!

UPDATE: According to Microsoft, each of the games above will be available to purchase and play today! – Or if not today, throughout the rest of the week. Stay tuned!

Temple Run Makes Its Long-Awaited Debut On Windows Phone

Temple Run Makes Its Long Awaited Debut On Windows Phone

Temple Run has been making millions of its players endlessly run to see how far they can get with their stolen idol ever since it was originally released back in the summer of 2011 on iOS. Imangi Studios released the Android version of Temple Run several months later in March 27 2012, and exactly one year later, Windows Phone finally gets the Temple Runs.

If you’re a Windows Phone user who is expecting to play Temple Run 2 on your device, you’ll be severely disappointed as this is the original Temple Run that has been released. In other words, don’t expect to endlessly run your way in the great outdoors as you zip-line and minecart your way through the game. (more…)
