Drift Mania Championship 2 Hits Windows Phone Marketplace

Drift Mania Championship 2 Hits Windows Phone MarketplaceIf you are a games developer, chances are pretty high that you will settle for either iOS or the Android platform, as those are where majority of the users are at, and in this case, potential gamers. How about the Windows Phone platform? Sure, Microsoft’s foray into the mobile operating system arena has led to new developments, and they are certainly in pole position to maintain its lead over BlackBerry, but is it viable enough for developers to drop money onto this platform? Joe Belfiore tweeted that the maiden Windows Phone 8 game that was developed with the UNITY engine has finally arrived on the Windows Phone Marketplace, in the form of Drift Mania Championship 2.

Drift Mania Championship 2 is said to be built using the Beta SDK, and keep your fingers crossed that it will be a short while afterwards as we start to see more games flooding into the Windows Phone Marketplace, although a trickle might be another effect. Phicomm Looks At Windows Phone 8

Phicomm Looks At Windows Phone 8Ever heard of Phicomm before? Yeah, they are not exactly the most famous smartphone manufacturer in the market, so we would not expect most folks to know exactly what is their nature of business. Still, this has not stopped them from rolling out Android-powered smartphones in the past such as the one that you see above, and this time around, we have word that they are currently in negotiations with Microsoft to roll out Windows Phone 8-powered handsets, too.

Phicomm is based in China, and has underlined their intention to be the next Windows Phone manufacturer. Of course, they are right at the beginning of such negotiations, so it will be some time before you start to see Windows Phone 8 devices in the market with the Phicomm brand all over. With them specializing in entry level to mid-range models, will their Windows Phone 8 offerings be able to live up to expectations, and help the company turn a profit? Like many things in life, only time will tell, so we await with bated breath.

Nokia Russia Says Aye To Pulling The Plug On Windows Phone 7.8 Update

Nokia Russia Says Aye To Pulling The Plug On Windows Phone 7.8 Update It was late last month when we received word that Microsoft has decided to lay the smack down on the continuation of Windows Phone 7.8 updates, which made plenty of sense considering how there were numerous issues connected with the update. Still, since there was nothing official about it, and neither was there a word in the ETA for when distribution might continue, most folks with smartphones of the previous generation that run on Windows Phone 7 are still waiting for an official announcement of sorts from Microsoft.

It is good to know that Nokia Russia has shed more light on the situation by tweeting about it, touting that Microsoft has taken the step to temporarily suspend distribution updates Windows Phone 7.8 for finalization purposes. What do you think of this situation? It would not cause too much of an uproar, especially when you consider that Windows Phone 8 is the way to go, not to mention the recent slew of Windows Phone 8 hardware releases at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

UK Windows Phone users to get BBC iPlayer

Users of Windows Phone smartphones in the UK will soon have access to the popular BBC iPlayer service. So far, it appears that the iPlayer for Windows Phone users will be a UK exclusive leaving US users of Microsoft’s smartphone operating system in the cold. iPlayer is available for other operating systems within the United States.

Exactly when the application will be made available to UK Windows Phone users remains to be seen. The only statement that comes close to offering a timeline from the BBC is “in the near future.” BBC says that the player for Windows Phone devices will be available as a browser-based shortcut within its own Live Tile. The iPlayer won’t be made available as a standalone app for Windows Phone users.

The BBC says that the shortcut to its iPlayer will work on Windows Phone 7.5 and 8 devices via a Live Tile. The statement came from the head of BBC Future Media Cyrus Saihan. He said that the shortcut would wrap the iPlayer mobile website together with its media player.

A spokesperson for the BBC said the offering for Windows Phone users is for paying subscribers in the UK only and no plans to make it available in the US have been made. Access to the iPlayer is currently available to Android, iOS, and BlackBerry users and to desktop users via browsers. The BBC says that over 650 devices can access the player at this time.

Concept Unicorn Windows Phone Concept By Alcatel Looks Interesting

If you love concept phones, then perhaps you will be able to get a kick out of this. Dubbed the Concept Unicorn, this designed was cooked up by Jet Ong, a senior industrial designer at Alcatel Mobile and based on his concept, it looks like it is a Windows Phone device that comes with a flip cover of its own. Yes we know that you could buy flip covers from third party accessory makers, but in this case, Ong has designed an Alcatel device with the flip cover being part of the phone itself. Essentially it’s a flip phone albeit a rather large one.

The flip cover was cover the display of the phone when not in use, and when flip open, it can be folded back much like a reporter’s notebook. According to the video, within that fold itself is a somewhat hidden USB port that can be used to charge the device. So far we like what we see although we do not know if this is indicative of Alcatel’s future plans for Windows Phone devices. Either way if you have a couple of minutes to spare, check it out in the video above or head on over to Jet Ong’s Behance portfolio to see more of his works.

Instagram To Hit Windows Phone 8?

Instagram To Hit Windows Phone 8?Instagram, the wildly popular app that had recently surpassed the 100 million user milestone and also said no to the BlackBerry 10 platform, looks set to hit the Windows Phone operating system after all, which is good news for Windows Phone users who were originally deprived of the presence of Instagram on their mobile platform. How did this bit of speculation come about? Well, it was not too long ago that someone spotted the Instagram icon on a Nokia Lumia 620 promotion banner, which certainly sent the tech world abuzz.

Could it just be a poorly done Photoshop job for the promotional banner, that the person behind it had absolutely no clue that Instagram was not available on Windows Phone? Still, this particular rumor haled from China, which is starting to be a powerhouse for leaks (most of them accurate so far), which could very well indicate that Instagram is coming to the Windows Phone platform. Of course, if this bit of rumor were to be true, then only Windows Phone 8 owners will “benefit”, so to speak, from its release, while Windows Phone 7.8 users miss out on this particular boat.

Microsoft To Introduce Major Windows Phone Update This Year

Microsoft To Introduce Major Windows Phone Update This YearMicrosoft is certainly going all out with their new Windows Phone 8 operating system, as we have received word that Microsoft has lined up a major Windows Phone update in the coming holiday season. Thing is, a recent Microsoft job posting mentioned, “This is a great time to join as we’re completing our current release are getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year and we’re chartered with keeping the momentum for Windows Phone by bringing new killer devices and delightful user experiences.”, which was what added to the speculation surrounding this new Windows Phone release.

Perhaps Nokia’s rumored high end smartphone will have to wait until this year’s holiday season arrives, in order to make the most of the situation. Windows Phone 8, after all, seems to be a whole lot more flexible when it comes to its upgrade path, compared to Windows Phone 7’s rather rigid set of hardware requirements. All it takes now is some patience, and slowly but surely, the calendar will make its way to the holiday season in due time. You just watch!

The Next Big Windows Phone Update Is (Probably) Coming For Christmas

Microsoft has been pretty quiet about their long term plans for the Windows 8 ecosystem, but its job board has been pretty loud-mouthed. First, it hinted at the plan for Windows Blue, and now a new posting indicated that the next big thing for Windows Phone is probably going to show up at the end of this year. More »

Microsoft to release major Windows Phone update around holidays

It seems that Microsoft’s own job’s board is the best place to find out what the company has planned in the future. In a new job posting, Microsoft has leaked information that their new, major update to its Windows Phone series should be coming here just in time for the holidays. The job posting also confirms that there is a “current release” for Windows Phone 8 devices that should be released sometime soon. It may be referring to the Windows Blue update.

Microsoft to release next Windows Phone update around Christmas

The job posting states that the company is, “getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year and we’re chartered with keeping the momentum for Windows Phone by bringing new killer devices and delightful user experiences.” It has also been confirmed that if you currently own a Windows Phone 8 device, you will be eligible for this major update. Microsoft has realized the mistakes it made with its Windows 7 devices, and will increase the longevity of its devices from here on out.

We also know that Microsoft is speeding development up for Windows Blue, and it plans to release it sometime during the summer. From the job posting, it looks like development for Windows Blue may be nearing its finish already. We know that one of the features that Windows Blue will have is a revamped Excel app. It will also feature other significant improvements to user experience as well as bug fixes.

We also know that Microsoft will release a few minor updates entitled GDR2 and GDR3, and that HTC plans on releasing the first phone to take advantage of the GDR2 update. Looks like we have a lot to look forward to for the Windows Phone platform come Christmas time, and its good to know that users who opt for devices like the upcoming Nokia Lumia 928 will still be able to take advantage of this major update.

Photosynth panoramic app arrives on Windows Phone 8

Microsoft’s ever-popular panoramic app Photosynth has arrived on the company’s own Windows Phone 8 platform. The app had previously only been available for iOS devices (as well as WP7), but after being absent from Microsoft’s new mobile platform for several months after its release, Windows Phone 8 users can now capture Street View-esque panoramic images with their new Windows Phone devices.

Unlike the Photosynth app for iOS, the Windows Phone 8 version comes with a few exclusive features, including the ability to launch the app from the default camera app. There are also new sharing capabilities that allow Windows Phone 8 users to share and view panoramas with one another, as well as posting to Facebook and Twitter.

There’s also more camera controls. Users can adjust for various lighting conditions by using the new exposure and white balance locking options within the app, which should make panoramic images turn out a lot better. Microsoft boasts that Photosynth is the “only Windows Phone app that can stitch a full sphere (that’s 360 degrees horizontally and vertically).”

The app is really easy to use. All you have to do is tap the screen to start, and then move your phone around in all directions to capture your surroundings with the camera. Whenever you move the camera to a different location, the app will automatically recognize that and will take a photo of that section. You can take full 360-degree images or just a quick panoramic from left to right.
