Windows Phone 8.1 Features Leaked By Developer

A developer claiming to have access to the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK or Software Development kit has leaked some of the features of the upcoming major Windows Phone update. Said developer showed up on Reddit to document the features, one that particularly stands out is the support for “Universal Apps.” This is perhaps one subtle hint of the Windows Phone and Windows RT merger that keeps on being rumored, developers will apparently be able to build Windows Store and Windows Phone Store apps using the same shared JavaScript and HTML. What this means in layman terms is that both Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to run apps that are nearly identical.

Nokia Moneypenny Screenshot Hints At 3G Dual-SIM Support And Windows Phone 8.1

Nokia Moneypenny Screenshot Hints At 3G Dual SIM Support And Windows Phone 8.1

Despite the fact that Nokia unveiled a handful of new devices at its major event in October, the company is believed to be working on multiple devices right now that are expected to be released prior to the close of its deal with Microsoft. Purported code names of these devices were first leaked back in November, that’s when we heard that there might be a dual-SIM Nokia smartphone code named Moneypenny. An alleged screenshot of this device has been leaked which hints at a couple of features that it might tout.

Moneypenny has previously been rumored to be a dual-SIM device. The screenshot clearly shows two signal strength indicators which reveal that 3G radio is housed inside the device. On the home screen there are multiple tiles for the phone and messaging apps, presumably for each SIM, though that might make things a bit confusing for users. Judging by the homescreen’s layout, it appears that the Moneypenny will ship with Windows Phone 8.1 pre-installed. Also evident in the screenshot are virtual Windows, search and back keys that have previously been physically built onto the device itself. Rumor has it that Windows Phone 8.1 will replace capacitive buttons with virtual ones. The leaked screenshot comes from @evleaks, who has been known to be right about these things.

Windows Phone 8.1 Notification Center And Virtual Assistant Rumored

Windows Phone 8.1 Notification Center And Virtual Assistant Rumored

Microsoft is yet to detail what the next major Windows Phone update is going to bring. Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows Phone Blue will come out next year and so far not much has been said about it. There have been a few rumors here and there, just recently we heard that it is possible for the coming update to do away with capacitive buttons and replace them with virtual ones. ”Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans” have told The Verge that Windows Phone 8.1 betas are currently being tested internally by the company and that this update is finally going to bring a notification center as well as a Siri-like virtual personal assistant.

This doesn’t come as a surprise though, as both possibilities have previously been rumored as well. Notification center is expected to be built into the next major Windows Phone update, whereas recently we heard that Microsoft’s “Cortana” personal digital assistant will also make its way over to WP devices. Apparently Cortana will replace Bing search and allow users to search using text input or voice. The assistant is said to support coversational interaction as well, just like Siri. Other features expected to be introduced with Windows Phone 8.1 include separate volume controls, through which users can control media and ringtone volume separately. VPN support for enterprise users and Smart Search results are expected to be included as well. Microsoft is expected to talk about Windows Phone 8.1 and its features in detail at the Build Developer Conference, which takes place in April next year.

Windows Phone 8.1 Might Bring Virtual Instead Of Capacitive Buttons

Windows Phone 8.1 Might Bring Virtual Instead Of Capacitive Buttons

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 update, slated for a 2014 release, is expected to bring a number of major changes to Redmond’s mobile platform. One such major change might be the addition of virtual buttons. Currently Windows Phone devices have the back, home and search capacitive buttons built into the body of the device. Support for virtual buttons would mean that manufacturers would no longer have to build them into the body, they will work just like the virtual buttons do on Android devices.

The possibility of virtual buttons coming to Windows Phone 8.1 a.k.a Windows Phone Blue was teased by a partial screenshot released by serial Twitter leaker @evleaks, who has a credible track record when it comes to leaking information about unannounced products or changes. It hasn’t been said if all Windows Phone 8.1 devices will be required to come with virtual buttons, but it seems like this move could prove beneficial for OEMs who would like to repurpose their Android smartphones for Windows Phone. This isn’t the first time we have seen virtual buttons on Windows Phone. The Nokia Sea Ray, which ultimately ended up becoming the Lumia 800, was first spotted with virtual buttons before it was released with a design change that brought capacitive buttons.

Windows Phone 8.1 Rumored To Drop Support For Hardware Back Button

Windows Phone 8.1 Rumored To Drop Support For Hardware Back Button

The back button in Windows Phone devices is there to allow users who want to go back to other applications with ease, though if a new rumor is true, future devices might do away with this button altogether. Paul Thurrott, a man believed to have insights into Microsoft’s work, has heard from a single source that the support for a hardware back button will be eliminated in WIndows Phone 8.1. This particular WP update is expected to be released next year.

It is not known how multitasking will work in Windows Phone 8.1, given the fact that the back button is also used to bring up the multitasking user interface. Microsoft is expected to tweak the multitasking experience in Windows Phone 8.1, so its possible that it might devise a completely new way of bringing up the interface. This update is also expected to bring support for devices that have displays up to 10 inches. The current Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update brings support for devices with 5 and 6 inch displays, going by this rumor, it appears that Windows Phone 8.1 will up the ante. The company is also rumored to be creating a universal binary for apps, which would mean that developers won’t have to make separate apps for Windows Phone and Windows RT, a single app will be able to run on both platforms. This is in line with recent rumors which suggest that Microsoft might merge Windows RT and WIndows Phone over the next two years. Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to release for existing devices in spring next year.

Microsoft Will Reportedly Offer A Single Store For Windows And Windows Phone Apps

Microsoft Will Reportedly Offer A Single Store For Windows And Windows Phone Apps

Rumor has it that Microsoft is currently planning to develop one single store that will contain apps for both Windows and Windows Phone platforms. That way, the company won’t have to run the separate Windows Store and Windows Phone Store. According to The Verge, this move has been confirmed today by head of the operating systems group at Microsoft, Terry Myerson. The internal company meeting was reportedly attended by “thousands” of Redmond’s employees. Myerson is said to have committed that the single store will go live with the “next releases” of both platforms, believed to be Windows Phone 8.1 and a special update for Windows 8.1. Both releases are expected in Spring, 2014.

The report says that Myerson didn’t reveal at the meeting how the single “Windows Store” is going to work on two different platforms, and if it will be possible for Windows Phone apps to work on Windows machines. This approach will be similar to the App Store, through which one can’t install tablet apps on an iPhone, but iPhone apps can be installed and scaled up to run on the iPad. Microsoft has talked about providing a common app platform before, but this is the first there’s been any news of an expected release time frame.
