Microsoft announces weekly “Red Stripe Deals” on apps and games

We know you can never get enough of app deals, and Microsoft seems to be pretty adamant about that too, which is why they have announced what they’re calling “Red Stripe Deals,” where they’ll be putting a select number of apps and games on sale every Thursday. And no, they aren’t talking about the cheap Jamaican beer.

windows-phone

Each week, the Windows Store will feature three new apps for the Red Stripe Deals each week. Each week, there will “typically” be one Xbox game, one indie game, and one top-rated app, all of which will be marked down by at least 50% of the original price. Microsoft says that Red Stripe name comes from the red stripe that you’ll see on the apps that are on sale for that week.

What does Microsoft have on sale this week? The inaugural Red Stripe collection features Runtastic Pro, Assassin’s Creed: Altairs Chronicles HD, and King Oddball — all of which are just $0.99 each. These three apps/games will only be discounted for a week, so grab them now before next Thursday rolls around.

Windows Phone 8 has seen a lot of neat apps and games come its way as of late. Just recently, Temple Run was released on Windows Phone 8, as was Pandora, which comes with no ads until 2014, which is usually a feature only granted to paying subscribers of the music-streaming service. Now, Windows Phone 8 users get the deal exclusively.

Nokia Music For Windows Phone 8 Knows Your Listening History

Nokia Music For Windows Phone 8 Knows Your Listening HistoryIf there is one app or software that does not need an “incognito mode” at all, it would be MP3 players. After all, you would be proud to wear the name of your favorite band in the form of a tattoo on your forearm, so that the world will know what an amazing band they are. The more obscure the name, the better, since it shows what a non-conformist that you are to the rest of the masses, or sheeple, as you call them. Well, Windows Phone 8 users would be pleased to hear that Nokia Music has been revamped, where it is now capable of keeping track of your listening history.

Not only that, there is also a Live Tile option which shows off different kinds of important information concerning the music that is being played, where among these will include details such as artist and song names. Apart from that, the above mentioned history feature will also take a virtual note of the most recently played tracks, while ensuring that the download section of the app’s mix radio stations has also received an update of its own.

Windows Phones Usurped iPhones In The Following Countries…

Windows Phones Usurped iPhones In The Following Countries...Remember earlier this morning when we brought you word that Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system actually outsold the likes of the iPhone and BlackBerry in select markets? Well, back then, the list of countries were not available for the masses to check out, but things do not remain a secret for too long on the Internet, and here we are with the juicy list where Windows Phones outship iPhones.

Thanks to the folks over at The New York Times, they managed to pester the good people at the IDC in order to reveal the list, and the countries would be Argentina, India, Poland, Russia, South Africa, and Ukraine. Apart from that, there is also a segment known as the “rest of central and eastern Europe”, which will include Croatia. This list concentrated on figures achieved during the fourth quarter of the year, and it must be noted that the last 3 countries together had a combined figure of less than 100,000 Windows Phones shipped there each, so it means that the numbers of iPhones shipped there are also far lower, without taking into account the grey market. It is a no brainer to say that countries where Nokia still had a strong foothold resulted in fantastic Windows Phones sales performance.

Temple Run hits Windows Phone today!

This week at the Game Developer’s Conference 2013 it’s been announced that a variety of new titles will be coming to Windows Phone 8, including the highly popular Temple Run. When it comes to the mobile app ecosystem, there are a few kings and queens and a whole lot of lesser titles – Temple Run is one of the gods. When the original Temple Run was pushed to Android, it’d already been one of the hottest-selling games on iOS for several months, exploding then onto Google’s mobile OS like a flash of lightning.

When this app comes to Windows Phone devices, you’ll find slightly less of a flash, but a flash nonetheless. The developers behind the app, Imangi, have made it clear that they’ll be releasing this app to Windows Phone devices soon and very soon – we’ll see exactly when just a bit sooner! In addition to this title, several other games have been revealed to be coming to Microsoft’s mobile OS rather rapidly.

The rest of the list goes like this: 6th Planet, Orcs Must Survive, Flight Theory, Ruzzle, Propel Man, Drift Mania Championship – and more! We’ll be taking a peek at each of them this week to see how fabulous they really are. Meanwhile be sure to let us know if you’ve found any of them to be particularly excellent!

Below you’ll see a brief hands-on video with the original Temple Run game for Android courtesy of our pals at Android Community. This game is essentially the same as the one you’ll be downloading for Windows Phone today, controls and all!

UPDATE: According to Microsoft, each of the games above will be available to purchase and play today! – Or if not today, throughout the rest of the week. Stay tuned!

Microsoft Endlessly Disappoints With ‘New’ Windows Phone Apps

Microsoft Endlessly Disappoints With ‘New’ Windows Phone Apps

Microsoft has breathlessly announced several new game titles for Windows Phone 8. And once again, Redmond continues to disappoint.

Windows Phone 8 Update Activates FM Radio, Double-Tap To Wake On Lumia 920

Windows Phone 8 Update Activates FM Radio, Double Tap To Wake On Lumia 920

Microsoft may have marked July 2014 as the cutoff point to when they’ll stop supporting Windows Phone 8, but until then, they’ll keep cranking out updates to help improve the platform for their customers. The next update Microsoft plans to release for Windows Phone 8 devices will reportedly support FM radio hardware, which was dropped when they introduced Windows Phone 8. The update will allow for handsets that support it, like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, to support FM radio signals.

In addition to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 update plans, Nokia is also currently planning to improve its Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 handsets by offering a new screen-activation gesture that would have owners double-tapping the screen in order to wake it up when it’s in its standby mode. We’re not sure just how many of you Nokia Lumia owners have been wanting this feature, but it seems like it’s something that will happen in the coming months. We just hope you have your double-tap finger ready for all of the tapping it’ll be doing to wake your Lumia up, or this new feature could certainly result some serious injury.

T-Mobile Uncarrier event: 5 devices they might reveal

With the T-Mobile UNcarrier pricing list and details revealed one day early, the 4th-largest carrier in the country may very well be showing off not the plan, but the devices that’ll attach to the plan at their big event! March 26th is the day that we’re going to see the full show – that’s tomorrow or today, depending on when you’re having a peek at this post – but what we know before the fact is quite telling. Several FCC listings and the tease of several machines is what we’ve got right now.

LG Optimus G Pro

Though it’d be quite a scandal if the LG Optimus G Pro were released with T-Mobile before it hit AT&T, we can certainly cross our fingers that this monstrous beast will bestow its greatness on the big pink carrier this week. As it’s already prepared for work with AT&T radios via the FCC, T-Mobile’s technology may very well be pumped up and ready for action here as well.

cameraback_lg_optimus_pro-580x381

Have a peek at our hands-on with the LG Optimus G Pro in a photo tour of Barcelona – through which you’ll learn one whole heck of a lot more data on the device!

Nokia Lumia 521

It should come as no surprise that the Nokia Lumia 521 would be chosen as one of the first devices to be unveiled here in the United States under these new carrier plans. This device was revealed at Mobile World Congress 2013 as one of several budget-minded smartphones working with Windows Phone 8 by Nokia, aiming for the everyman without sacrificing the high-quality craftsmanship and Nokia-way that comes with every Lumia device. You’ll find this device having hit the FCC this week.

Have a peek at our hands-on with the Lumia 520 – the original version (the international version) of the device we’ll be seeing here on T-Mobile as the 521. It’ll be essentially the same device with a few choice changes to the hardware build – expect it! Watch out for the slightly larger Lumia 720 as well.

BlackBerry Z10

Even though the BlackBerry Z10 was available to business customers with T-Mobile back on the 11th of March, it would still make a lot of sense for the company to give some hands-on time and another kick in the bootloader to this smartphone at this week’s event. Once it’s available to the general public, the stream of BlackBerry love can continue – and maybe it’ll even have 4G LTE connectivity. Can we dare to hope?

Have a peek at our BlackBerry Z10 review right this minute as it appears internationally and let us know if you’d jump on board if it were available to you from T-Mobile this week.

Lenovo IdeaTab A1000-F

Though it’s rather unlikely that a device that, according to Engadget, is passing through the FCC this week with Wifi only would be revealed by T-Mobile this week, it’s still possible. This machine is a 7-inch tablet we heard about earlier this year with not one whole heck of a lot of surprises inside, but a Q2 2013 release time on the books. Watch out for it one way or the other!

affwe-580x392

Have a peek at our hands-on with Lenovo’s A and S-Series tablets from Mobile World Congress 2013 as well. Keep in mind that T-Mobile has been carrying tablets for several years now – it may be time to go big as they go small!

iPhone 5

It may be that T-Mobile has finally signed a deal with Apple to get the iPhone on their shelves, but this is the least likely device of the collection here in this article. It’s much more likely that a carrier like T-Mobile would wait for Apple to reveal a new generation of device before they announce a partnership – especially with the new subsidy plans in the UNcarrier push.

htc_samsung_apple-580x326

Don’t forget the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy Note II, also – the Galaxy device was the first device to have T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network switched on while the HTC One has been guaranteed to see the carrier sooner than later! Remember – this T-Mobile event happens at 8AM PST tomorrow – that’s 10AM Central, and 11AM Eastern Standard Time. Don’t you dare miss it!

Pandora Launches On Windows Phone 8 With Ad-Free Service For 2013

Pandora Launches On Windows Phone 8 With Ad Free Service For 2013

Even though the official cut-off date for support will be July 2014, developers are finally starting to make their hugely popular applications onto Windows Phone 8. We recently saw the Call of Duty Elite and Nokia HERE apps make the jump to serve all of Windows Phone 8 users, and today, one of the most popular music streaming services, Pandora, is finally making the jump to Windows Phone 8.

Pandora for Windows Phone 8 will finally bring everyone’s favorite streaming radio service to a new mobile OS with some additional perks. First, Pandora on Windows Phone 8 will offer its users an ad-free experience for all of 2013 courtesy of Microsoft. In addition to that, Pandora will also support Windows Phone 8′s Live Tiles interface by allowing people to access features from the app directly on WP8′s Live Tiles. Pinning their favorite tracks, seeing what’s currently playing and easy access to recently played stations are all possible without launching the app. (more…)

Pandora arrives on Windows Phone 8, ad-free until 2014

Pandora, the ever-popular internet radio service, is now available for Windows Phone 8 devices. It took a while for the app to reach Microsoft’s new platform, but nonetheless, WP8 users can get in on the music-streaming action right now. Plus, Pandora is making their WP8 app ad-free until 2014, as well as tacking on a couple of exclusive features.

Screen Shot 2013-03-21 at 9.10.00 AM

Both Pandora and Microsoft know that you’ve been waiting a long time for a Windows Phone 8 version of the app to come out, and they even announced plans to bring Pandora to WP8 during the platform’s launch event, so as a gift for your patience, they’re giving WP8 users an ad-free experience until the end of this year. This is a feature that only normally comes to premium subscribers of the service.

Furthermore, the app comes with Live Tile support, meaning that you can check out what artist and song is playing right from the home screen, and users can simply tap on the tile to go directly to the app. Microsoft and Pandora claim this as the app’s exclusive features, so if you were expecting anything groundbreaking in the actual app (besides the ad-free experience), you may be disappointed.

Along with the ad-free experience, however, users will also be able to play unlimited music. Pandora recently stuck a 40-hour monthly limit on its service for free users, but Windows Phone 8 users will be able to listen to all of the music that their hearts desire until the end of the year, after which you can spring for the monthly or yearly plans ($3.99 monthly or $36 yearly).
