Microsoft rumored to be scaling up Windows Phone 8 displays, while scaling down Windows RT

Yesterday we reported on a ZTE Windows Phone 8 device that came with an alleged 5.9” display and a Full HD resolution. We expressed our doubt, especially since Microsoft has not officially announced their support for resolutions beyond 720p HD, so either ZTE had their facts wrong or they knew something we didn’t. While we still remain skeptical, a new rumor has emerged via @MS_Nerd who has suggested that Microsoft is currently working on scaling up Windows Phone 8 to displays up to 7”, while also working on scaling down Windows RT to a smaller display of 8.4”.

“ZTE Blade 8: WP8 counts 3 pixels as 2. MSFT adding stylus support in OneNote, IE & Reader. Figuring out how to reach 7″ size with WP or RT.

Another project with select members of Surface & Nook teams, using RT on a 8.4″ screen exploring it from the other side, no stylus yet.”

What do you guys make of this? Could we be seeing additional display resolution support in future Windows Phone 8 updates? We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now and suggest that you do the same.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 7, 2012

We did it folks – we made it through another election, which means that we finally get a break from those endless political ads. It won’t be long before those ads are playing all over the place again, so savor the moment while you can. We found out today that President Obama set Twitter records with that a tweet that was shared more 600,000 times, and Apple was hit with a hefty fine in a case over patents related to FaceTime. Foxconn is saying that it’s still having issues keeping up with iPhone 5 production, and Pixar has named a new building after Steve Jobs.

We had a couple of quarterly reports land this afternoon, with both Activision and Qualcomm looking great as they charge into Q4 2012. Apple executive Eddy Cue has joined Ferrari’s board of directors, while AT&T is putting up a whopping $14 billion to boost its LTE and U-Verse services. There were rumors of an iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display floating around today, and ZTE was spotted teasing a new Windows Phone 8 device with a massive 5.9-inch screen.

Gearbox has squashed a nasty exploit in Borderlands 2 with a new patch, and we learned that Kim Dotcom’s new website has been killed before it even got off the ground. AT&T has revealed off-contract pricing for the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820, and Time Warner Cable is trying to lure new customers in by giving away free Xbox 360s. We got to see Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unbox the Wii U, found out which features will be on the Wii U from launch day, and were even told that the Wii U will allow for 12 user accounts per console.

Verizon is waiving voice and text fees for those who were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, and Microsoft has released its SkyDrive app for Windows Phone 8. A new Sandvine report gives us an idea of just how popular Netflix is in North America, and Yahoo has hired a former National Geographic photographer to head up Flickr. A*STAR has revealed a new hybrid disk drive that’s only 5mm-thick, and DC Comics are now available digitally through iOS, Kindle, and NOOK devices.

Finally tonight, Don Reisinger asks if Apple actually helps its competitors, we take a closer look at Qualcomm Halo, and Chris Davis gives us his review of the Phillips hue lightbulb. That does it for tonight’s edition of the Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

SkyDrive app version 3.0 for Windows Phone 8 released

SkyDrive, Microsoft’s very own file hosting service, was first released on Windows Phone 7 in December last year. And just a few months after hitting version 2, the free app is now up to version 3 and has just arrived in time for the new upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices such as the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Nokia Lumia 920. There’s also a new settings for photo upload and download size as well as updated app icons and visual, as you can see above. SkyDrive app arrives on Windows Phone 8

If you’re planning on picking up a Windows Phone 8 handset, then good news, as you’ll have a new version of SkyDrive waiting for you in the Windows Phone Store. Released today, the most important feature this bad boy is touting is support for Windows Phone 8. It also has a few more features worth talking about, so read on to find out more.

In version 3.0, users now have the ability to search through their SkyDrive folders and files on their handset. There are also new size settings to choose from when downloading and uploading images, which should be a nice feature for those who use SkyDrive primarily for storing photos. Microsoft has also updated the visuals and icons in the app, so SkyDrive is getting something of a visual overhaul in version 3.0.

Those features listed above are it as far as the update is concerned, so version 3.0 is a little light on notable additions. That’s okay though, because the big feature – support for Windows Phone 8 – is included in this update, so there’s plenty to get excited about in that respect. SkyDrive on mobile phones already lets you manage your files, upload video from your phone, access all of your SkyDrive content, and share the files you’ve stored in your SkyDrive account, so most of the big features were there to begin with anyway.

So, SkyDrive seems like a pretty handy app for those with go with Windows Phone as their mobile OS of choice. The new version of SkyDrive is available now on the Windows Phone Store [download link]. To make things even more awesome, it’s free, so with Window Phone 8 support and no payment required, things can’t get much better for SkyDrive users.

It’s Impossible To Tell If China’s Stupid Giant 6-Inch Windows Phone Is a Joke or Not

This is it, guys. Smartphones are now significantly bigger than your average penis. And it’s China’s fault. China and its monstrous 5.9-inch Windows Phone screen, which is baffling and probably warrants a nuclear strike from the US. This is happening. More »

SkyDrive app gains Windows Phone 8 support in version 30

After just a few short months at v2.0, Microsoft’s own SkyDrive app is now sitting pretty at 3.0. What’s an extra point get you? For starters, it’ll support all incoming Windows Phone 8 products, and it’ll also allow users to search their SkyDrive files / folders. Moreover, you’ll find new settings for photo upload and download size, as well as updated app icons and visuals. Microsoft has also improved performance when it comes to loading one’s content, but as of now, the 3.0 update won’t play nice with WP7 handsets. Hit up the source link if you’re hungry for more.

AT&T off contract Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 pricing revealed

Yesterday on contract pricing for AT&T’s Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 smartphones was announced. The pre-order pricing for the Lumia 920 with a two-year contract is $99.99. The on contract pricing for the Lumia 820 with a two-year agreement is $49.99.

With the AT&T product pages for both phones now live, the official off contract pricing has been revealed. If you want the Lumia 920 sans contract, you’ll need to cough up $449.99. The Lumia 820 is a little cheaper with a no contract price of $399.99.

Obviously, the upside to paying those no commitment prices is if you decide you don’t like AT&T you take your phone elsewhere or cancel service. It’s worth noting that both of those devices are quite expensive when you compare them to unlocked Android smartphones such as the $299 LG Nexus 4. If Windows Phone 8 is your thing, the off contract pricing might not be a big deal.

If you’ve managed to miss all the coverage of these Nokia smartphones, they are basically same this side of the screen size. The 920 has a 4.5-inch 1280 x 768 resolution screen. The 820 has a 4.3-inch screen. Both devices have the same QUALCOMM snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. Both also have the same 1 GB of RAM.

Angry Birds Space now available for Windows Phone 8

While Windows Phone might not necessarily be the platform developers pick as their first choice to develop apps for, there are still plenty of apps for users to choose from. Now if you were thinking of making the jump to Windows Phone but were worried about losing your Angry Birds fix, fret not as Rovio has announced that Angry Birds Space will now be available for Windows Phone 8 devices. Earlier this year Rovio stated that they won’t be bringing the game onto Windows Phone due to the fact that they’d have to completely rewrite the app, but thankfully they changed their minds a few months down the road. In any case the game is expected to be the same as its iOS and Android counterpart, so if you have a Windows Phone 8 device and would like to get your hands on the game, it is available for $0.99 via the Windows Phone Store.

Did ZTE just out a Windows Phone 8 handset with a 5.9″ Full HD display?

With the release of Windows Phone 8, we are starting to see devices from Nokia and HTC that sport some pretty big screens, displays large enough to compete with some of the higher-end Android phones out there. However it looks like ZTE might have both companies beat – in fact it seems that ZTE might even have Android manufacturers beat with the release of their upcoming Windows Phone 8 device. Lu Qian Hao, the head of market strategy for ZTE has recently posted a photo (pictured above) on Weibo of the company’s upcoming handset.

Along with the photo, Lu also wrote that ZTE’s new Windows Phone 8 handset will feature a display of 5.9”, which is larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and a resolution of 1920×1080! The handset is also expected to feature DTS audio technology which should help with the audio experience, although in all honesty it’s hard to beat a set of actual speakers. At this point in time we have to stop and take a step back because this is a bit odd considering that Microsoft never announced support for Full HD displays; that and the fact that the phone in the photo above is sporting the old Windows Phone 7.x logo makes it all the more suspicious. We suggest you take this with huge shovels of salt for now and hopefully ZTE will be able to clarify those details in the near future.

ZTE teases 5.9-inch 1080p Windows Phone smartphone

ZTE is a Chinese company that makes all manner of smartphones. ZTE’s head of market strategy, Lu Qian Hao, has teased a photograph of a smart phone using a Chinese Twitter equivalent called Weibo. The tease picture shows that the company is hard at work on Windows Phone devices.

The tease includes a photograph of what appear to be twin smartphones clad in white or black cases. Little detail was offered along with the photograph other than a bit of info of what is claimed to be the screen resolution and size of the device. The screen is tipped at 5.9-inches in size.

A 5.9-inch screen would put this mysterious ZTE Windows Phone on par with the other phablets on the market already. The key difference between what ZTE is claiming, and other devices on the market is that Lu Qian Hao says that the 5.9-inch screen will support full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. If you’re familiar with Windows Phone, you might be a bit curious about that resolution.

As WMPowerUser points out, Microsoft doesn’t offer official support for full HD screen resolution. Official support is for up to 720p resolution. However, coders claim that the underlying Windows Phone 8 kernel is capable of handling 1080p requiring minor tweaks to unlock the higher-resolution. That would mean if that resolution claim is true, ZTE has made those tweaks to support full HD resolution.
