Windows Phone 8 SDK Released at BUILD

Microsoft just made its Windows Phone 8 SDK public at the BUILD developer conference. The new SDK brings much expected (and awaited) features like native C++ code and overall compatibility with the Windows 8 SDK.

This new SDK is much (much!) better than the Windows Phone 7 SDK, which required all code to be written in C#. This was without a doubt a “no-go” for developers who had a huge C++ code base (or those who simply dislike C#) and I believe that it has hampered the Windows Phone 7 app ramp-up from the get go. Steve Ballmer hypes massive Windows 8 launch numbers at Build 2012

Steve Ballmer announced first of all today at Build 2012 that they’d sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in the three days since it’s been launched. It’s no small number, of course, and for the developers seeing this system for the first time here in its final form at the developer conference we’re experiencing here this week, it’s nothing but great! Laptop sales are up 20% over forecasts, said Ballmer, and by the words of Ballmer, it would appear that Microsoft is doing better than they expected they would – imagine that!

The enthusiasm was addictive at Build 2012 right at the dawn of Windows Phone 8, Ballmer making it clear that his journey from his arrival in the USA in 1988 spanned the gamut: Windows 95, 98, the PC going big, and more. The message was clear: Windows 8 is the next generation, and with Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT the wave is coming in strong. Ballmer makes it clear that it’s not just about one screen, not just about one version of the operating system – it’s about everything, all of the displays, all of the form factors.

This kind of experience is “alive with activity”, said Ballmer, and every screen is “alive and active with information” from the cloud, through Microsoft. With the launch of Windows Phone 8, said Ballmer, “the phone launches in full fruition into the Windows 8 family.” Ballmer’s talk was more than just a primer for the event, it was a sell-point for investors as well.

“If you want the best experience with your Windows Computer, you will own a Windows phone.” – Ballmer

It was time to build not just a single standard phone for everyone, Ballmer said of the original launch of Windows Phone, it was time to build something personal for each user. That’s one of the big points being driven home with Windows Phone 8 as well – as evidenced earlier this week with the big Windows Phone 8 launch event as well with Jessica Alba and friends.

Stick around our Microsoft hub as well as the Windows Phone 8 tag for more information on Windows Phone 8 than you’ll be able to handle all week!

Live at Microsoft Build 2012 for the dawn of Windows Phone 8!

This week Microsoft is holding their yearly developer conference with Windows Phone 8 at the forefront right here at the start of the mobile OS, but the desktop OS Windows 8 and tablet OS Windows RT as well – and we’re here all week to bring it to you live! Build is essentially the Microsoft equivalent of Google’s own Google I/O and Apple’s WWDC – it’s Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Windows RT’s turn now. This Build is unique in that it comes immediately following the release of Microsoft’s new fave

Jordan Rudess, keyboardist for the musical group Dream Theater stood on stage at the beginning of the first keynote this week to show off some apps that his group developed. He’s not just a musician, he’s a developer as well. Using a Surface RT and a giant Lenovo touch-capable All-in-One PC to make it happen with Windows 8, he set the tone for the whole conference: multi-touch, multi-use, cross-platform action. His app Tachyon (which you may have heard of before) brings on a lovely musical bit of madness for the masses.

We’re expecting not just one whole heck of a lot of new information from Microsoft this week other than developer-specific details. If you’re interested in the guts of the system, [stay tuned to our Microsoft hub.] It’s time to see what Microsoft has in the insides of this next-generation release!

Also have a peek at the timeline below to see some more Windows Phone 8 action as it came on down over the past couple of weeks. This weekend is the big drop internationally, and Microsoft stores across the earth will be bringing you every phone in every color in the very near future – get pumped up to the max! And don’t forget to check out our full Windows Phone 8 review as well!

Nokia Music gets upgraded for Lumia 920 and Lumia 820: Equalizer, Dolby support, Facebook connectivity

Now Windows Phone 8 has arrived with Xbox Music in tow, what’s next for Nokia Music? Well, at a press briefing this week in London, it told the assembled tech press that its still going — and Nokia’s even adding features. The music service is apparently continuing to expand, with new tracks being added weekly — Nokia’s mix radio currently houses 338 curated mixes in the UK alone, across pretty broad selection of music genres. And yep, there was a mention of K-Pop.

New functionality improvements include an immediate share-to-Facebook option, while the Gig Finder feature nestled within the music app picks up improved search skills, capable of checking specific venues and areas, along with the ability to buy tickets for — and get directions to — future gigs. The app’s new audio equalizer has 18 presets while you’ll also be able to tweak the seven-channel system to your own personal preference. On top of that, Dolby tech is also embedded in, with Dolby headphone (a signal processing upgrade) in attendance on both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. Nokia also affirmed that the upgraded app will be included on its hardware that gets bumped up to version 7.8. We’re just about to get our review model and will give the new features a full rundown as soon as we can.

Nokia Music update ushers in the Lumia 920 and 820 with Artist Profiles

This week when the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 hit the market with Windows Phone 8, you’ll be seeing updates to Nokia Music as well. This update will bring a variety of new features including no less than Dolby Headphone support – that’s high definition beat blasts for your eardrums like never before! Also included in this update to Nokia Music is full Artist Profile Pages – you’ll be able to get more information on the artists you love than you ever though you’d have wanted!

Each Artist Profile page will include a biography, Twitter messages from their official Twitter page, and upcoming gigs across the planet. These Artist Profile pages also include new Nokia mixes that can be triggered from one of their tracks directly from the page the track is on. This makes it easier than ever to get the lovely precision-collected sets of music you want!

UPDATE: Nokia has confirmed that this update will also be pushed to devices running Windows Phone 7.8 as well – good deal!

Worth noting is that Nokia Music only exists on Nokia devices at the moment and for the foreseeable future. At the moment it appears that this update will be hitting the Lumia 920 and 820 first, but no word has been confirmed on whether or not previous Lumia devices will be able to work with these new features.

The Lumia 920 and 820 will be in stores this weekend internationally and soon – very soon – here in the USA on carriers galore as well. We’ll be taking closer looks at the 920 and 820 in addition to the different carrier iterations of the phones in turn. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more Windows Phone 8 action as well!

Nokia Lumia 822 announced for Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless will be playing nice with the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system, and the first handset to roll out with Verizon livery would come in the form of the Nokia Lumia 822 – which is a variant of the stock Lumia 820. The change in model number makes it easier for folks to quickly identify with just which mobile carrier the device is on, and Verizon claims that the Nokia Lumia 822 was designed specifically for Verizon’s fast and ubiquitous 4G LTE network – which incidentally, they are also the US’ largest mobile carrier at the moment.

Specially designed for simplicity and ease-of-use, the Lumia 822 will be accompanied by exclusive Nokia features such as Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, and Nokia City Lens, helping you get around in a jiffy with a technological slant. The bright 4.3-inch display with ClearBlack technology, coupled with a fast yet efficient 1.5GHz dual-core processor, ought to pack enough processing power for the average smartphone user. Oh yeah, just in case the 16GB of internal memory is not enough for your portable storage needs, there is also a microSD memory card slot that allows you to expand that further by another 32GB.

Charging its 1800mAh battery can be done the traditional way – through plugging in a standard issue charging to get it going, but if you want to be a wee bit more future forward, there is always the wireless charging route made possible thanks to an accessory (purchased separately, of course) known as the Nokia Wireless Charging Shell. The Lumia 822 will also play nice with other accessories such as the Nokia DT-900 Wireless Charging Plate and the JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker.

In terms of imaging, the Nokia Lumia 822 will boast of an 8-megapixel shooter that has advanced Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash at the back, while the front-facing camera sports 720p HD resolution recording capability, and there are also a pair of integrated microphones for superior audio recording.

Verizon will make available the Nokia Lumia 822 in white, black and grey colors before Thanksgiving for $99.99 on a new two-year contract if you are interested.

Windows Phone 8 debuts

Never count Microsoft out of the game, especially if it has to do with operating systems – it is their bread and butter after all, and even on the mobile platform, they do have a considerable amount of firepower never mind that right now, they are tussling it out with RIM for a tiny slice of the mobile operating system pie which is dominated by iOS and Android at the moment. The latest announcement of the Windows Phone 8 smartphone operating system happened yesterday, and it does look like the masses will be spoilt for choice if you have yet to jump aboard the smartphone bandwagon, or want to make a switch from either iOS, Android or BlackBerry OS.

We will take a look at some of the more notable features found on Windows Phone 8, starting with Live Tiles that function as the heart and soul of Windows Phone – and no other device has them at the moment. You are able to arrange the iconic Start screen just they way you want with Live Tiles, pinning your favorite people, apps, music, games, and photos amongst others. Not only that, there are three sizes of Live Tiles as well as 20 bright color options including cobalt, crimson and lime to choose from, truly personalizing your handset.

It is also the only smartphone to come with Live Apps that delivers information right to the Start screen, including the Groupon deal of the day, flight information and news headlines. This also means Facebook is capable of delivering real-time information to your lock screen with an updated wallpaper, now how about that? Windows Phone Store will also not fall short on the apps department, boasting 120,000 apps to choose from, ranging from “Angry Birds Star Wars” to “Cut the Rope Experiments,” “Disney’s Where’s My Water,” “LivingSocial,” “Temple Run,” and “Urbanspoon” amongst others. Pandora will also arrive on Windows Phone in early 2013 with one year of ad-free music, now how about that?

Kid’s Corner might be a winner for parents whose kids want to use their smartphones – it lets you share your device without having them fool around with the other settings. Sort of like a user account on your smartphone, that’s what Kid’s Corner is all about. As for being selective in your communications with certain friends, the Rooms feature lets you share and chat with one particular group instead of the entire social network, thanks to the creation of private groups of folks who also use Windows Phone 8.

Are you all stoked up for a Windows Phone 8 experience, and which device would you settle for?

Nokia Lumia 920 goes on sale in Canada tomorrow

The Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 from Nokia will be available in select Rogers stores in Canada tomorrow. Consumers will be able to nab the phone for $99.99 with a 3-year contract, or for $549.99 with a monthly contract-free plan. According to the announcement, wider availability will be available “in the coming days.”

The Lumia 920 features 32GB of internal storage space, plus 7GB of SkyDrive cloud storage. Inside you’ll find a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. Ports include a micro USB 2.0 port, a micro USB data port, and a standard 3.5mm audio jack. The 2,000mAh battery gets approximately 320 hours of standby time and 9 hours of talk time.

Windows Phone 8 offers the same tiles you find in Windows 8, and provides users with access to about 120,000 apps, which is an impressive number that still falls far below its Android and iOS competition. Forty-six of the fifty major smartphone apps will be available to Windows Phone 8 users, however, including the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, and Angry Birds. Microsoft currently holds only 3% of the global smartphone market.

Although Microsoft falls short of Android and Apple in terms of both app availability and market share, a few big names have gotten behind the mobile OS, including HTC, Samsung, and Nokia. Assuming Microsoft can entice developers to beef up its app store offerings, the combination of high-end phones being released, the novelty of a sleek new mobile OS, and Microsoft’s integration of Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 just might give the company a much-need bump in the global market.

Nokia Lumia 920 ships first to Rogers, makes Canadians the world’s vanguards for $100 (update: still very exclusive)

Nokia Lumia 920 Rogers

What, did you think Americans or Europeans would get the first crack at the Lumia 920? Continuing a recent pattern of Canadians getting devices first, Rogers has confirmed that some of its stores will have Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone 8 hardware in stock on October 30th — that’s almost immediately, folks. If you call and find you’re near one of the choice few shops carrying the 920, it will cost you either $100 Canadian on a lengthy 3-year contract or $550 outright to walk away with Microsoft’s poster child. Nearly the only drawbacks to being a pioneer are the black-only color choice (sorry, still no patriotic red) and Rogers’ current lock on the initial launch, although Microsoft’s own mention of the Lumia coming to Rogers “and others” gives us hope that Bell and Telus will follow soon. It’s a small price to pay for making even the Finns slightly jealous.

Update: Surprise — Rogers caught the Microsoft page for itself and says the hint of non-exclusivity was a mistake that’s being corrected. We don’t know if the carrier has a permanent exclusive, but we’d tentatively go shopping for a Samsung ATIV S on Telus if you’re looking for a high-end Windows Phone on another Canadian network.
