Microsoft unveils new lock screen for Windows Phone 8 powered by Live Apps

Microsoft is busy officially revealing all the bits and pieces that make up Windows Phone 8, and one of them is its new lock screen. Powered by Live Apps designed for Windows Phone 8 like Facebook, it lets apps directly update your lock screen with new photos and information. Exec Joe Belfiore is, as usual, excited about it, pointing to the “surprise” now waiting every time he picks up his phone. If pics from your last vacation popping up every time you turn your phone on doesn’t get you going ,just imagine sports scores or other relevant info you’ve picked pushed straight to the front, just a button press away.

Windows Phone 8 announced, has one year of ad-free Pandora subscription

We’re live at the Windows Phone 8 launch in San Francisco, good thing Hurricane Sandy is not going to make a pit stop here. Having said that, Windows Phone 8 has just been officially announced, where it is touted to deliver Live Tiles on your smartphone, similar to how Windows 8 works on your desktop to ensure you remain up to date with your friends and family via different apps. One thing that is interesting is, Windows Phone 8 carries a spanking new Lock screen powered by Live Apps. Basically, it automatically surfaces photos, notifications and contents from your favorite apps, and you choose what you want to see – from news to sports scores and Facebook updates.

There is also a dedicated Facebook app for Windows Phone 8, letting you connect to your phone and feel even more personal. Woe to the person whose Windows Phone 8 is stolen though…

T-Mobile unveils holiday lineup: Nexus 4, HTC 8X, Lumia 810 to land November 14th

TMobile unveils holiday lineup Nexus 4, HTC 8X, Lumia 810 to land November 14th

T-Mobile was set to have its own splashy product unveiling today in New York City, but a certain Sandy put the kibosh on that. Now that Google’s let its trio of updated Nexus products out of the bag, Magenta’s ready to give us pricing and availability for the Nexus 4, HTC 8X and Lumia 810 which are set to hit the carrier’s shelves this November 14th. Both Google’s and Microsoft’s (signature) flagships will be available for $199 on a two-year plan, while Nokia’s lower-end WP8 handset will go for $149 with the same contract duration. Also, joining the crowded launch lineup that day is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 for $349 with a two-year agreement. As for the newly HSPA+ capable Nexus 7, well, you’ll be able to snag that refreshed slate on Google Play just one day later. Of course, T-Mo hasn’t forgotten about its value-minded sub base, offering up LG’s Optimus L9 on the 31st of this month at an affordable $79 on contract. So if it’s options you wanted this holiday season, Magenta’s doling them out in spades. Hit up the break for the official PR.

Nokia and Verizon officially announces the Lumia 822

Contrary to previous rumors that the Verizon-headed Nokia Lumia 822 might be getting its official debut next month, Verizon and Nokia has just announced the said Windows Phone 8 device today. Expected to run on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, the Lumia 822 features a unique design, maps with turn-by-turn navigation, free unlimited music streaming, and an enhanced camera for its users.

The Lumia 822 sports a 4.3-inch 480 x 800 display alongside an 8-megapixel camera from Carl Zeiss and a 1.2-megapixel HD front-facing camera. Under the hood is a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, and microSD card support. Verizon consumers will also love the fact that the Lumia 822 also comes with Nokia Drive+, Nokia City Lens, Nokia Music, and a separately sold shell design that is capable of wireless charging.

“With the Nokia Lumia 822, first-time smartphone buyers – and those ready to switch – will get high-quality performance on both their device and Verizon Wireless’ incredibly fast 4G LTE network,” said Olivier Puech, President of Nokia Americas. “Bringing the Nokia Lumia 822 to Verizon Wireless allows us to expand our award winning Lumia brand to even more customers here in the United States,” he added.

Verizon Nokia Lumia 822 official with 4G LTE [Update: $100]

Verizon and Nokia have officially announced the CDMA version of Nokia’s Lumia 820, the Verizon Lumia 822, running Windows Phone 8. Supporting Verizon’s EVDO Rev.A and 4G LTE networks, the Lumia 822 is otherwise identical to the GSM model which will be offered on both AT&T and T-Mobile USA, complete with interchangeable covers and the possibility of wireless charging.

There’s also an 8-megapixel camera on the back, with Carl Zeiss lens, and a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera for video calls. Nokia adds Smart Shoot to the Windows Phone camera app, too, slicing moving objects out of the frame as well as allowing photographers to pick the best combination of facial expressions in group shots.

Nokia Drive+ and Nokia Music are also preloaded, with turn-by-turn navigation, City Lens augmented reality, and free streaming audio. Obviously there’ll also be the Windows Phone Market, with all of the usual apps for Microsoft’s platform, too.

Unfortunately, neither Nokia nor Verizon are saying when, exactly, the Lumia 822 will be going on sale, nor for how much. That may well change later today, however, given Microsoft’s incoming Windows Phone 8 launch event in San Francisco.

Update: According to Nokia USA’s page, the Lumia 822 will be priced at $99.99 with a new, two-year agreement.

Nokia Fully Details The Windows Phone 8-Powered Lumia 822, Coming To Verizon This Fall

Screen Shot 2012-10-29 at 8.28.09 AM

Nokia today officially announced that it will be offering the Nokia Lumia 822 as part of Verizon’s “Fall portfolio,” bringing the Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 820 variant exclusively to Verizon’s network. This version offers wireless charging, an 8 MP camera on the back and 1.2 MP camera on the front, as well as LTE support and switchable shells. No word yet on specific availability or pricing – we might see those later today at Microsoft’s official Windows Phone event.

The Lumia 822 is aimed at entry-level smartphone shoppers and budget buyers, offering a 4.3-inch screen (smaller than its predecessor) and a less impressive camera (though the 822 has a better one than the 820 it’s based on, which is headed to AT&T). Judging by statements included in the press release by Nokia Americas President Olivier Puech, we can expect it to be priced competitively with iOS and Android devices aimed at customers new to smartphones. “With the Nokia Lumia 822, first-time smartphone buyers – and those ready to switch – will get high-quality performance on both their device and Verizon Wireless’ incredibly fast 4G LTE network,” he said in the release.

Full stats are available now on Nokia’s website. The phone has a dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, an 1,800 mAh battery, 1GB of RAM and a microSD slot that supports cards up to 64GB. It also boasts Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC.

The 822 was rumored not to have a swappabble shell earlier in October, so it’s nice to see that come to the device. Price rumors put it at around $50 on-contract, but we’ll have to wait and see whether it goes that low.

Microsoft launches Windows Phone 8 companion app for Windows 8 and Windows RT

It was already rumored last month that Microsoft is working on a Windows Phone 8 companion app for its latest operating system. And with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event just around the corner, the Redmond-based technology giant has just released the said companion app for Windows 8 and Windows RT. Essentially, the new app will allow Windows Phone 8 devices and computers running Windows 8 to work together seamlessly “so you always have your photos, videos, and music, and more where you want them.”

However, the app isn’t just about syncing music, photos, and videos. It also lets you share cool and interesting stuff from your phone, automatically save photos and videos from your phone to your PC, and check how much space you are using for each type of content – all without having to open the app itself. Do take note that the app only works with Windows Phone 8 devices. You can check out the app via the Windows Store.

Mysterious Windows Phone device spotted in the wild, speculated to be another Huawei device

We know that Huawei has a Windows Phone 8 handset in the works dubbed the W1. This is thanks to several leaked images and a press shot of the device, but it looks like the W1 might not be the only Windows Phone 8 device Huawei has in the pipeline. Well it seems that yet another Huawei handset was spotted in the wild, and based on its design it shares some design characteristics with its Android sibling, the Ascend P1. However the front buttons have revealed that it is none other than a Windows Phone device – assuming that these photos are real and not fabricated. Now if these photos are the genuine article, there is a very good chance that this handset will run on Windows Phone 8, although the exact specifications of the device remain a mystery, like what processor will it be running on, how much memory, its camera image sensor size and etc. In any case hopefully more details about this mysterious Windows Phone handset will be revealed in due time, so check back with us later for more updates.

Microsoft Releases Windows 8 Companion App For Syncing Media With Windows Phone 8 Devices Ahead Of Big WP8 Reveal

Screen Shot 2012-10-29 at 09.05.46

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event takes place later today — where we expect to find out exactly how the integration between WP8, Microsoft’s new mobile OS, and its new desktop OS Windows 8 will work. In the meanwhile, the Verge has spotted a companion app that’s surfaced on the Windows Store which will allow WP8 users to sync content with a Windows 8 PC.

The app allows WP8 users to “get an overview of what’s on your phone, add photos, videos and music from your computer, find apps and dive into each category on the phone and share with other apps, or delete items to make space”, according to the app description. “Your computer and your Windows Phone 8 work together seamlessly with the Windows Phone app so you always have your photos, videos, and music, and more where you want them,” it adds. The Verge notes that it doesn’t work on Windows Phone 7-based devices, as you’d expect.

Here’s the full run down of features, according to the app listing

  • Get your music, photos, and videos from your computer to your phone (and vice versa).
  • Quickly share things from your phone with Windows 8 apps (like Photos, or Search). You don’t even have to open the Windows Phone app to move things around.
  • Automatically save photos and videos you take with your phone to your PC.
  • See at a glance how much space you’re using for each type of content, so it’s easy to make sure you never run out of room on your phone.
  • Get to WindowsPhone.com to download apps, learn more about your phone, or find it if it’s lost.

Back in July, Microsoft’s WP senior product manager Greg Sullivan told me to expect some “cool stuff” when the wraps finally come off Windows Phone 8. ”There are a whole series of… new capabilities and features that will come that we haven’t talked about and there’s integration with Windows 8 that we’ll demo closer to the date,” he said. It remains to be seen whether syncing, sharing, auto-saving and the other features detailed above are the only “synergies” between Microsoft’s mobile and desktop OS.

In the Windows Store listing, the app is listed as a “tool” and has been given a 12+ age rating.  The app developer is listed as Microsoft Corporation. System requirements/supported processors are listed as: x86, x64, ARM.

Interestingly the app has apparently been reviewed 49 times — despite there being no Windows Phone 8 devices on sale yet — and has a three-star rating.
