TMobile to Offer the Nokia Lumia 810 exclusively in the US

T-Mobile announced on Monday that it will exclusively offer the Nokia Lumia 810 in the United States. Set to be available “in the coming weeks,” the 810 features a 4.3-inch OLED WVGA Clear Black display, an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss optics rear-facing camera, a 1.2-megapixel Skype HD-certified front-facing shooter, Windows Phone 8 and support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ faux 4G network. If those specs sound a little familiar, they should — the 810 seems quite a bit similar to the already announced 820. There are some details absent from this release, however, including CPU, storage, RAM and pricing, but we expect this to be remedied in the coming days. Now that T-Mobile and Ma Bell have called dibs on some of Nokia’s first wave of Windows Phone 8 devices, we’re left to wonder if America’s other two major wireless carriers will soon get with the program.

Lumia 810 brings Nokia Windows Phone 8 magic to T-Mobile

The T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 810 has been introduced as an exclusive release on the carrier here in the USA with Windows Phone 8 at its side. This device will be working with a lovely 4.3-inch OLED WVGA Clear Black display as well as interchangeable shells on its back in both cyan and black – rather similar to the Nokia Lumia 820 with changeable shell for wireless charging as well. The difference between that device and this one appears to be slight – mostly a name-change, as it were.

Users will be able to work with the Lumia 810′s high-powered 8-megapixel camera on the back of this device with Carl Zeiss optics and HD video as well. This device also has a 1.2-megapixel camera up front that Microsoft notes is Skype HD certified. The Lumia 810 brings with it a collection of photo-friendly features such as Cinemagraph which will let you make animated GIFs – strange stuff! Another back-shooter-ready feature on this device is Group Shoot, allowing you to pick the best faces and smiles from a set of quickly shot photos of a group of people (or just one person, if you prefer.)

Of course you’ll also have Nokia Music with a lovely collection of advertisement-free, registration and subscription-free music tracks. You’ve got offline play and playlist availability as well – also free – and the ability to access playlists created by “an expert team of global and regional musicologists.” Sounds pretty nice right out of the box!

This device also works with Nokia City Lens, a GPS and camera-utilizing service which has you actually looking at the world around you with tags on businesses that you can access with a tap. This feature has been in the works along with Nokia Drive (for voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation) and Nokia Transit (for all the guides you could possibly need) for a very long time now – it’s time for action! The Nokia Lumia 810 is set to release “in the coming weeks” from T-Mobile with a pricing structure attached – it’ll also be working with T-Mobile’s Unlimited plans – 4G to get pumped up!

Verizon Windows Phone 8X may have passed through the FCC

Verizon Windows Phone 8X may have passed through the FCC

Now, we don’t know for sure what the PM23100 that just made its way through the FCC is, but we’d put pretty good odds on it being Verizon’s Windows Phone 8X. Only a couple of hours after what appears to be the AT&T-bound 8X was given the thumbs up by regulators, yet another HTC Windows Phone appeared, with an incredibly similar model number, CDMA radios and compatibility with Big Red’s 700MHz LTE. Knowing that it’s an HTC Windows Phone and that it packs NFC really doesn’t leave too many possibilities. The one pleasant surprise, it’s also compatible with GSM frequencies 850 and 1900,, so you’ll be able to roam the globe with just the swap of a SIM. Hit up the source to see the filling for yourself.

Likely HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&T-friendly LTE surfaces at the FCC, just in time

HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&Tfriendly LTE surfaces at the FCC just in time

Isn’t that convenient. With only weeks left to go before the official Windows Phone 8 launch event, what’s likely a version of the HTC Windows Phone 8X with North American LTE support has stopped by the FCC for approval. The PM23300 variant we see here (the international 8X is the PM23200) supports both the needed 700MHz LTE band for its eventual appearance at AT&T as well as AWS for wider AT&T coverage and the big three Canadian carriers. All are good signs that HTC is just about ready, although T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers might not want to get overly excited just yet — there’s no AWS 3G, CDMA or Verizon-ready 700MHz LTE to be found on this 8X, which shows that any US launch will still demand multiple editions. The others won’t be far behind in the FCC race with that November release window already locked in.

Nokia Lumia 920 to be a Rogers exclusive in Canada, we wonder if red is an option

Nokia Lumia 920 to be Rogers exclusive in Canada, we wonder if red is an option

Where goeth AT&T, so often goeth its one-time partner Rogers. That’s certainly true for the Nokia Lumia 920: Rogers has confirmed that it will have an exclusive on the Windows Phone 8 flagship in Canada, much as AT&T has a lock on the device in the US. While there’s no pricing or color options yet, the Canuck model will share the November shipping window and LTE support, and it’s easy to imagine Rogers gravitating towards its signature (and coincidentally patriotic) red. Other Canadian carriers haven’t chipped in about the Lumia 820; if history is any indicator, though, we’d anticipate the less expensive portion of Nokia’s lineup going Telus’ way.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 4, 2012

Welcome to Thursday evening everyone – just one more work day to go and then we’ll have arrived at the weekend. Today we received a pair of invites from Microsoft – one for a Windows 8 launch event happening on October 25, and another for a Windows Phone 8 event happening on October 29. We also learned today that Samsung intends to update the Galaxy S III to Jelly Bean “soon,” but sadly, we still don’t have a specific date to speak of. We were also told today that HP will be hiring more than 50 developers to work on Open webOS, which is definitely something to get excited about.

Google is said to be looking to the Nexus 7 for inspiration for the next Nexus smartphone, while AT&T was seen touting the fact that it will be offering both the Samsung ATIV smart PC (complete with Windows 8, mind you) and the all-new Samsung Galaxy Camera, which comes packing Android. Earlier today, we reported that Facebook has been auto-liking pages without users’ permission, but it wasn’t long after that Facebook got back to us with a statement telling us its side of the story.

Google finally settled its long-running lawsuit with US publishers today, and Intel announced a new Atom-based storage platform. We had a fair amount of video game news today, with EA and Maxis sharing a new 9-minute gameplay video of Sim City. Nintendo held another Nintendo Direct live stream today, during which the company announced that the special edition Pikachu 3DS XL will be launching in Europe and that a number of its 3DS games were going live on the eShop. Bethesda released Skyrim: Hearthfire on PC today, we caught a glimpse of a tech demo for Notch’s new game 0x10c, and learned that Mists of Pandaria sales are lagging behind launch sales for Cataclysm.

NASA gave us an update on Curiosity’s mission today, and we were introduced to the new PadPivot NST tablet holder. ASUS announced the VivoTab RT for AT&T, and we heard whispers that Logitech is working on a new wireless webcam for Macs. Hitachi announced a new airport gate prototype that quickly sniffs for bombs, and the iNUKE BOOM Junior speaker was revealed (though it’s still pretty big as far as iPhone/iPod speakers go). Microsoft announced it’s acquisition of PhotoFactor this evening, and finally tonight, our own Chris Davies asks if Google+ can eventually replace Evernote.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Nokia Lumia 820 for AT&T hands-on

Nokia Lumia 820 for AT&T handson

As exciting as the 8X and Lumia 920 are, no phone lineup — especially not one launching a new OS — is complete without a midrange competitor. Nokia has answered that call with the Lumia 820, a modestly specced and marketing gimmick free Windows Phone 8 device that’s ready to combine all the advantages of Microsoft’s latest mobile platform and AT&T’s growing LTE footprint with an easy to swallow price point. Or, at least so we assume. Price is still up in the air on this glossy polycarbonate device, but we can only imagine that the 4.3-inch WVGA screen and PureView-less camera won’t be commanding top dollar.

Nokia Lumia 920 for AT&T hands-on: a Windows Phone 8 flagship with PureView imaging and LTE (video)

Nokia Lumia 920 for AT&T handson a Windows Phone 8 flagship with PureView imaging and LTE

Much like the 900 before it, Nokia’s Lumia 920 will be making its US debut on AT&T as an exclusive. Despite not having Microsoft’s “signature” blessing, this Windows Phone 8 flagship is poised to ship sometime this November with all the stuffings of its international counterpart. Inside that vibrant polycarbonate hull, of which there are now five colors (including cyan), is a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ 1,280 x 768 display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor buffered by 1GB RAM, an 8-megapixel PureView rear camera and 2,000mAh battery augmented by the inclusion of wireless charging. Naturally, this locked and branded variant will run on the carrier’s 4G LTE network and offer the same “Super Sensitive Touch” panel that we tested extensively at the company’s Espoo HQ.

This being Microsoft’s WP8 game, however, we still weren’t able to go past the live-tiled start screen and into the meat and potatoes of the fuller app drawer, nor could we truly give the OS a spin — that’ll all have to wait until end of October. From the tightly controlled software bits we did demo, though, the 920’s shaping up to be a smooth and solid contender for the beast phone race. Icons and text scroll by without any marked blur thanks to the screen’s 60Hz refresh rate. And colors on that saturated display pop, while viewing angles remain consistently impressive. What also hasn’t changed is the handset’s girth and weight — it’s still chunky and relatively heavy in hand, but we’re willing to overlook it for the PureView rear module alone.

Within the frenzied constraints of events like these, it’s hard to really dive deep into camera performance. But we don’t really have much need for that given our exhaustive coverage of the 920’s optical image stabilization, low light capabilities and Cinemagraph GIF-making magic. Still, expect us to give it a fuller poke when final review units land in our laps (hopefully) later this month.

Unfortunately, the wait for Nokia’s next of high-end Lumia kin isn’t over yet. AT&T’s playing coy and won’t fess up to a concrete date or even on-contract price. That should all change as soon as Microsoft makes things officially official. Until then, sate yourself with the images below and don’t miss the video after the break.

Windows Phone 8 “wedding invites” tip October 29

Less than a week after the Windows 8 operating system release event takes place in New York City, Microsoft has let loose today that they’ll be holding their Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco. This event will be taking place on October 29th and will begin at 10AM PST – save the date! We’ll likely see some final details on the mobile operating system and will quite likely have some more hands-on time with the OS right before it hits stores.

This invite foretells not one whole heck of a lot of information as it’s not really an invite so much as it is a Save The Date. This type of letter is sent out before wedding plans are finalized – this means that Microsoft is indeed engaged to Windows Phone 8, but that it doesn’t necessarily have its location, live band, or fancy new dress picked out. It does look pretty solid that it’ll be inside the SoCal area.

For those of you looking for information on what Windows Phone 8 will bring, you’re pretty much going to find all of it in our Windows Phone 8 tag hub. This mobile operating system has been all but revealed already in its fullness save for its extra connections to the desktop/notebook/tablet based Windows 8 OS. For that, we’ll just have to wait a bit longer.

With the Windows 8 event sitting on the 25th on one end of the country and the Windows Phone 8 event sitting on the other, we must assume that there’ll be some sort of awesome high-five party right in the middle at some point. Of course there’s no real knowing until the day! Stay tuned and stick with SlashGear for the big events – all of them!

Windows Phone 8 event greets San Francisco on October 29th

Citizens of the fair city of San Francisco, you might want to take note of October 29th on your respective calendars. After all, that is when Microsoft will be holding a Windows Phone 8 event in the City by the Bay, which would be sandwiched in between the Windows 8 and Surface launch on October 25th in New York City and the software giant’s developer-oriented Build conference at Redmond, Washington, that is happening a day after all the action at San Francisco.

From what we know, Microsoft’s announcement notes mention that “[a]s we approach holiday season, we ask you to save October 29th on your calendar for some exciting Windows Phone 8 news. Look out for more details in the coming weeks.” Do you think that this is confirmation of an October 29th Windows Phone 8 launch in San Francisco? That date really isn’t that far off in the future, so there is nothing quite like some patience to find out the whole truth eventually.
