More Windows Phone 8 devices with larger screens from HTC coming?

Do you love indulging in a game of Tower Defense, no matter the “base” game? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, surely you are experienced with the concept of enemy waves bearing down upon your carefully constructed (or not) towers to defend your base. Well, Ren Weiguang, president of HTC China, just mentioned casually that his company will be working on additional Windows Phone 8 devices that will carry a larger display compared to what the recently announced HTC 8S and HTC 8X, which means we will definitely see a 4.5” display at the very least considering how the HTC 8X came with a 4.3” display.

Chances are, this larger sized HTC smartphone that is in the works could very well be the quad-core powered HTC Zenith, where initial rumors did point towards a massive 4.7” screen, making it move ever closer to phablet territory. Come to think of it, HTC has yet to dive into the world of phablets, making us wonder what is preventing them from doing so. Would you be happy with a Windows Phone 8 device that has a larger display?

Huawei Ascend W1 targeted for end 2012 release?

Huawei does want to get involve in the Windows Phone 8 scene, and they recently targeted the Huawei Ascend W1 to be released before the year 2012 is over. It is widely believed that the Huawei Ascend W1 will show up alongside the higher end Huawei Ascend W2, although that remains to be confirmed. This would mean that Huawei will be yet another player in the Windows Phone 8 scene, what with Samsung, Nokia and HTC having jumped aboard the Windows Phone 8 bandwagon already.

According to Huawei’s Chairman of Devices, Richard Yu, he mentioned on China’s social network Weibo that the upcoming W1 should be able to debut before the year is over, where it ought to burn the equivalent of $320 in your bank account, coming in black, blue, pink and white colors. All that it requires now from the general public is some patience – will the Huawei Ascend W1 be able to live up to the expectations of what the other manufacturers have rolled out so far where Windows Phone 8 is concerned?

Huawei’s Windows Phone 8 handset outed as Ascend W1, supposed launch window surfaces

Huawei's Windows Phone 8 handset outed as Ascend W1, supposed launch window surfaces

HTC, Nokia and Samsung have each showcased their initial volley of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but Huawei has yet to reveal the Ascend hardware it promised would run Microsoft’s smartphone OS. The firm’s Richard Yu took to the social network Sina Weibo and outed the device as the Ascend W1 earlier this week, but kept other specifics under wraps. Citing sources from within the company, Chinese language outlet Winp is now claiming that the W1 will ship between November and December, carry a price tag of 2,000 RMB ($317) and arrive in black, blue, pink and white hues. Though a September 25th unveiling is also rumored, Yu mentioned that Huawei will make it a habit of launching phones as they’re unveiled, so it may be a while before the curtain is fully pulled back if the November / December window is correct.

The Lumia 920’s PureView Camera Passes the Russian RC Car Test [Video]

When it comes to phone cameras, the Lumia 920’s PureView is proving to be pretty awesome at low-light shots, but how good is that Optical Image Stabilization? A couple of Russians with a 920, a Galaxy S III, and an RC car ran a little experiment to find out. Turns out it’s nothing to sneeze at. More »

HTC 8X and 8S priced up: iPhone 5 and GSIII undercut

HTC refused to be drawn on pricing for its new Windows Phone 8X and 8S smartphones, saying only that they’d launch in November, but that hasn’t stopped retailers stepping up with some SIM-free numbers. The good news is that, even without a subsidy to help out, both Windows Phone 8 devices undercut key rivals like the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.

Retailer Clove has the 8X up for preorder at £399.99 including tax ($648), while the 8S is listed at £224.99 including tax ($364). In contrast, UK sales of the iPhone 5 kick off at £529 ($856), again including tax, while you can pick up a Galaxy S III unlocked and SIM-free for £462 ($748).

UK pricing factors in the not-inconsiderable 20-percent tax rate, and we’d expect both Windows Phones to be cheaper in the US. Still, they’re some ambitious numbers from HTC, and given Windows Phone 8 has an uphill struggle to claw market-share from iOS and Android, undercutting the flagship from both platforms is a sensible strategy.

HTC 8X and 8S hands-on:

It also bodes well for on-contract pricing, though while networks AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile USA have all confirmed they’ll be offering both models (with some LTE flavors too) subsidized numbers aren’t available yet. We’ll know more closer to launch in November.

We grabbed some hands-on playtime with the new phones, so check out our first-impressions of the 8X and of the 8S.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 19, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday evening everyone! Today brought us HTC’s highly-anticipated event, and it did not disappoint. It was there that HTC revealed two brand new Windows Phone 8 devices, the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S. Went went hands-on with both devices not long after they were announced, and shortly before HTC announced that these new phones will be landing at Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in November. HTC released a video detailing the “design journey” of the 8X and 8S, and Nokia had some choice words about HTC’s “innovation” later on in the day.

Today was also a pretty big day for the Apple fans out there, as the company officially released the final version of iOS 6, and we were there with the full iOS 6 changelog. A new version of OS X Mountain Lion launched alongside iOS 6 (10.8.2 to be specific), and new benchmarks show that the iPhone 5 is a beast when it comes to browsing. IHS iSuppli says that the 16GB iPhone 5 costs Apple $207 to make, and a Samsung Facebook campaign has been invaded by the pro-Apple crowd. Samsung ultimately got the last laugh though, as it released a new commercial informing the consumers of the world that the best has already arrived.

T-Mobile USA has named John Legere as its new CEO, and he sat down for a hello to everyone on YouTube. AT&T brought its 4G LTE service to 8 new cities today, and ZTE gave us an idea of when it will launch its first phones running Firefox OS. The Samsung Galaxy Note II has been announced for all major US carriers, and US Cellular gave the new device a price tag of $300 and a late-October launch. Earlier in the day, we heard that Google was planning to launch a new update for Google Maps on Android, and sure enough, that update arrived just a few hours later with a couple cool new features in tow.

Tobii and NTT DOCOMO will soon be showing off a new tablet with Tobii’s eye-tracking technology, while the Raspberry Pi’s turbo mode gives it a 50% boost in power. After its two co-founders announced yesterday that they were leaving the games industry, BioWare outlined its plan for the future (spoiler: it includes more Mass Effect and Dragon Age), and Toshiba announced the latest in its line of Camileo camcorders, the rugged BW20. Finally tonight, we have a review of the all new Kindle Fire HD for you to check out – does Amazon’s latest impress or does it fall flat? Read the review to find out!

That’s all for the Evening Wrap-Up, folks. Now go out and enjoy the rest of your night!

HTC shows design work for Windows Phone 8X and 8S, strips them bare (video)

HTC shows design work for Windows Phone 8X and 8S, strips them naked video

HTC and Microsoft have been cautious about what they’ll let us see of the software on the Windows Phone 8X and its 8S counterpart. Apparently, they don’t have any such compunctions about leaving the phones’ naked components hanging in the breeze. Along with outlining the essentialist, Metro-inspired philosophy behind the Windows Phone 8 devices’ design, HTC’s new behind-the-scenes video (after the break) shows the internals without that extra-colorful shell getting in the way. The exposé is more about the sheer demand for customized hardware to match those distinctive enclosures than anything too scandalous — that tapered shape requires some finessing on the inside, we’re told. Whatever you think of HTC’s guided tour, the company has at least learned its lesson and decided against including any unexpected prototypes this time around.

ZTE phones with Firefox OS coming early 2013

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Mozilla’s incoming Firefox OS, but today ZTE shed a little light on when it should be arriving. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that ZTE’s first phones running Firefox OS should be landing sometime in the first quarter of 2013. There isn’t a specific release date available yet, but that jibes pretty well with the release window we’ve been hearing for the elusive OS.

ZTE and Mozilla announced a partnership earlier this year, and today, a representative from ZTE said that the company is looking to Firefox OS as a way to diversify its offerings. ZTE already offers Windows Phone and Android devices, and confirmed once again today plans to release Windows Phones 8 handsets at some point in the future. Embracing Firefox OS, however, is a move to make sure that the company doesn’t rely too much on Windows or Android, which would be a smart move for any smartphone manufacturer.

Firefox OS is expected to launch first in Brazil, so it seems that the first ZTE devices supporting the OS will be releasing there too. ZTE and Mozilla have their work cut out for them though, with Android taking nearly 70% of smartphone market for itself. Apple’s iOS posts strong second place numbers too, floating in between 16% and 20% the last time we checked in. That’s going to make it incredibly hard for a new OS to get off the ground, but there is a glimmer of hope.

After all, there’s a lot of hype surrounding Windows Phone 8 at the moment, and it seems that the smartphone crowd is at least intrigued by the idea of a Firefox OS. As an entry-level smartphone maker, ZTE has been growing lately, so the company could potentially do a lot to get the Firefox OS (and Windows Phone 8 for that matter) into the hands of more consumers. We shall see, but with Firefox OS and Windows Phone 8 both on the horizon, it’s an exciting time for those who want a little diversity in their mobile OSes. Stay tuned.

DNP HTC's Windows Phone 8X vs the competition fight!

HTC’s unveiled a pair of Windows Phone 8 devices that seem destined to square off against Nokia’s similarly polycarbonated handsets. You may not be able to easily pick ’em out of a crowd, but there’s plenty of differences on the inside, and let’s be frank, that’s where it counts. We’ve pitted the Windows Phone 8 flagships from HTC, Samsung and Nokia against each other to see which one’s going to be getting your cash when it comes to renewal time, and Round One begins just as soon as you jump past the break… ding, ding, ding.
