Live From Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 Press Conference

nok

And we’re live from Nokia’s joint press conference with Microsoft here in rainy New York City. On tap for today’s festivities include the launch of one or two new Windows Phone 8-powered handsets codenamed “Arrow” and “Phi”.

Based on leaked information last month, the two devices are expected to be named the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 with PureView. Will they be able to compete with the likes of HTC and Samsung? We’ll find out when the press conference starts at 10AM local.

Nokia Windows 8 tablet tipped to gatecrash Windows Phone event

Nokia is working on Windows tablets in California and could even reveal a new slate model at its New York Windows Phone 8 event today, according to insider whispers. The west coast project is either running Windows 8 or Windows RT, a former Nokia exec told Finnish paper Tekniikka & Talous, while further tipsters suggest that phones may not be the only thing on the agenda for this morning.

Tablets have been a missing piece in Nokia’s mobile strategy for some years now, with the company flirting with the possibility with oversized, non-cellular touchscreen slabs like the Maemo-powered 770, but not releasing a true iPad competitor. Several years back, the company attempted a netbook of its own, the Nokia Booklet, running Windows 7, but its heavy asking price meant sales were underwhelming.

The company’s design chief confirmed a tablet was in the pipeline back in March, saying that he spent roughly a third of his time on the project, and a Windows RT model on a Qualcomm processor has been rumored for some time. Of course, Microsoft now has its own Windows RT/8 tablet range, Surface, announced in June.

Since then, Nokia execs have made quiet comments about tablet intentions, but the firm has been coy to speak out too publicly on its plans for range reinvention. However, the absence of a committed tablet strategy – and the potential such a line-up would have for building a more holistic ecosystem – was cited as a key weakness in an official Nokia risk assessment.

SlashGear will be joining Nokia in NYC in a few hours time, where the company is expected to reveal three new Windows Phone 8 handsets. They’ll likely include wireless charging and a suite of custom Nokia apps and services.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 4, 2012

We’re getting ready to end a Tuesday that has produced some rather big news, so let’s jump right into it, shall we? By far the biggest story of the day had to do with upcoming the Apple event. Apple started sending out invitations for the event today, using a picture that gives away what to expect at the event (spoiler alert: the iPhone 5 is coming). With an iPhone 5 reveal essentially confirmed, analysts are predicting success for the new handset, saying that it could potentially sell 10 million units this quarter. Not bad, provided the device actually hits those marks.

Speaking of the iPhone 5, Apple has prepared itself for the lawsuit Samsung promised should the iPhone maker release device with LTE functionality. iPhone 5 nano SIM cards were also spotted today, leading us to believe that the next iPhone will be launching shortly after it’s revealed. Apple isn’t the only one with an event incoming though, as HTC also started sending out invitations for a September 19 event of its own today. The Galaxy S III has knocked the iPhone 4S out of the top US sales spot, and we enjoyed a rather colorful Nokia Lumia 920 leak today.

After seeing it pop up a few times, Verizon announced the Samsung Galaxy Stellar today alongside the new LG Intuition, and Nokia has teased that some of its Windows Phone 8 Lumias might come complete with wireless charging. The FBI fell victim to a massive AntiSec hack today, and after the FBI agent targeted in the attack called for hackers to help the FBI fend off these kinds of breaches, the FBI called out AntiSec and said it wasn’t involved in any such attack. The Panasonic Toughbook 19 has been reintroduced with new third-generation Intel Ivy Bridge processors, and we caught a glimpse of the Nokia N9, which will sadly never see the light of day.

JXD has a very familiar-looking Android gaming device on offer, and today the Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies was given a release date. The Pantech Flex is heading straight for AT&T with a budget price tag, and Syabas has announced the next iteration of its popular Popcorn Hour media player. Bethesda released Hearthfire on the Xbox 360 earlier today, a spec list for the (hopefully) upcoming Panasonic GH3 was leaked, and Huawei has finally given the Ascend D1 – its new flagship device – a release date. Finally tonight, Square Enix has a new Final Fantasy collection for die-hard fans, but you better be ready to hand over a stack of cash if you want to get your hands on it.

That does it for the SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up for this Tuesday. Now, go out and enjoy the rest of your evening!

Bad Piggies, the alternateuniverses answer to Angry Birds lands September 27th

Imagine a world where everyone’s evil and wears a goatee, while our avian allies from Angry Birds are actually the villains of the piece. That’s the premise behind Bad Piggies, Rovio’s newest productivity killer, which promises entirely new game mechanics (and no slingshots!). It’ll arrive on iOS, Android and OS X on September 27th, with Windows and Windows Phone 8 versions following shortly afterward.

HTC Planning A Windows Phone Event On September 19?

This year, September seems to be the official launch-month for a lot of companies. We have Nokia and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event lined up for the month. An iPhone 5 is expected on September 12th. And now, rumors have it that HTC is also planning something big come September 19th.

The invitation from HTC seems to suggest that the company has plans of unveiling a Windows Phone 8 device at the event. That would make sense since Nokia will officially remove the lid on Windows Phone 8 devices on September 5th, expectedly to unveil Lumia 820 and 920 PureView.

HTC’s invitation says ‘Join HTC to see what’s next.’ Together with a sleek, neat logo at the bottom, this pretty much affirms the rumors that the company is coming up with its own lineup of Windows Phone 8 devices. At the event, the expected launches include HTC Zenith, HTC Accord and HTC Rio. The event will kickstart at 11 a.m. EST on September 19th.

HTC reveals September 19 event to show “what’s next”

Not to be outdone by Apple, HTC has blasted out invites for a September event of its own, hitting New York City on the 19th for an unspecified launch. “Join HTC to see what’s next” HTC’s invite reads; although there’s no indication of what hardware might be announced, it’s likely to include Windows Phone 8.

That would put HTC following in the shadow of Nokia’s Lumia devices, which are on track for being announced tomorrow, Wednesday 5, also in NYC. Three devices are expected to be revealed, spanning the range from entry-level through to new flagship.

Features are believed to include Beats Audio, with the Rio and Accord tipped to ship in October, while the Zenith will come later in the fourth quarter.

SlashGear will be headed off to NYC to cover HTC’s launch, which is a particularly important one for the company. Sales have been sluggish in the past few quarters, with HTC overshadowed by Samsung and Apple, though HTC insists that it is “coming back.”

HTC announces upcoming press event on September 19th

HTC announces upcoming event on September 19th

Not wanting Nokia, Motorola, Amazon or Apple to hog all of the attention this month, HTC just sent out invites to the press for an event on September 19th. The invite doesn’t offer up too many clues as to what will be revealed at this particular time, but we have a feeling the company may offer its competition to whatever products Nokia will unveil tomorrow (hint: not Android). Regardless of what it may be, we’ll be there to give you the full scoop. We’ll post more details as they flow in.

Nokia Lumia 920 appears in five color leak

Another image has appeared showing off what very well may be the hero device at this week’s Nokia/Microsoft event, this being the Lumia 920, a Windows Phone 8 smartphone for the next generation. This model has been leaked with information leading us to believe that it’ll be working with PureView technology in its 8 megapixel camera, this notion all but confirmed by Nokia’s PureView chief this morning. His comments including how “it’s NOT about the number of pixels but what you do with them” appearing as a direct response to criticism over the not-yet-confirmed Lumia smartphone.

This newest image shows the Lumia 920 in a variety of colors, the white and the black casings being ones we’d not yet seen at this point in time. The rest of the leaks suggest that this device will indeed be running Windows Phone 8 complete with its new smaller set of tiles for a more diverse range of abilities on the device’s home screen. This device will likely be popping up with a dual-core processor from Qualcomm and will have both front and back-facing cameras.

You’ll see a volume rocker on the right along with the power button and a physical camera shutter button as well. The whole model appears quite similar to the previous Nokia smartphone range with Windows Phone, particularly in the case of the Nokia Lumia 900. Nokia will be continuing their image branding here and will be pushing hard with Microsoft to keep the Windows Phone universe strong – and growing, of course.

The Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system from Microsoft will be part of the company’s big push for the next generation of Windows software on the whole, this including Windows 8 and Windows RT for tablets as well. Stay tuned for more information on Nokia’s contribution to the party as we head to the New York media event tomorrow bright and early – be here at 9:30 AM EST for all the newest blasts straight from Nokia!

BONUS: the back of the Nokia 820 has also been shown by the same source – in purple!

Nokia teases wireless charging for new Windows Phone 8 Lumias

Nokia has apparently declared war on charger cables, with a new Windows Phone 8 teaser video hinting that tomorrow’s Lumia range won’t require a nest of wires in order to rejuice. The brief video, which you can see after the cut, shows a bundle of different cords – including USB, Firewire and more – in what often seems like their default state (tangled and messy), being thrown away by a smug looking woman.

Wireless charging on the new Windows Phones wouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The technology was confirmed by inside sources yesterday, closely followed by leaked images of the charger dock itself. That will apparently consist of a brightly colored desktop puck, onto which the smartphone sits.

According to the sources, inside the back panel of the new phones there is a magnetic strip, that will keep the Lumia in place and allow it to recharge. A microUSB socket is still present for traditional charging and, of course, synchronizing data with your PC or Mac.

We’ll know all the details tomorrow, when SlashGear heads to NYC for Nokia and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event. Get up to speed on what we’re expecting in our rumor round-up.
