Nokia Windows Phone 8 Lumia event: What we know already

An event is coming up this week that’ll be hosted by Microsoft and Nokia in New York, it containing a whole lot of Windows Phone 8 news that appears now to have a leaky pipe. What we’ve seen thus far has been a collection of smartphones, a wireless charging pad, some speakers, and a few headphones in Nokia bright colors as well. What’s left to be shown off if not the final confirmation that all of these devices exist, and how much they’ll be costing? You never know, readers, you never know.

First you’ll want to check out the details of the event itself – it’s taking place on September 5th at 9:30AM EST in New York and we’ll be covering it right from the real-world location for your benefit! Stay tuned to SlashGear during the event to get up close and personal with the next generation of Nokia devices working with Windows Phone 8, code-named Apollo. Nokia has provided one single detail on this device lineup outside the fact that they’ll be working with Windows Phone 8: the name. According to Nokia, Samsung should be “taking note”, because their “next generation Lumia” will be coming soon – September 5th soon, that is.

There’s been word that Verizon will be amongst the carriers that’ll be working with Windows Phone this season – with Nokia in mind. After the Apple vs Samsung case in the USA had its first verdict, Nokia stock went up, this looking bright for the next generation of Microsoft-embedded Lumia lineup. The details are surprisingly abundant on this line of devices even though they’ve not been revealed as such by the manufacturer.

Have a peek at the Nokia Lumia wireless charging pad that appeared this morning and make sure you don’t mistake it for a mouse. That same post shows some wireless earbuds and a wireless charger for the earbuds as well – or it could be a holder for some Nokia thin minds too – we don’t know yet! This tip also includes a note that Nokia’s wireless charging will be working with the Qi system so you wont need to use the Nokia puck if you don’t want to.

There’s been a tip on a Nokia Lumia 920 PureView, complete with PureView technology inside. This PureView isn’t the same 41 megapixel camera beast we saw earlier this year in the Nokia 808 Pureview, but an 8 megapixel cousin that we’ve yet to hear any details on.

Another device that’s been leaked is the Nokia Lumia 820 Arrow, this device being a mid-range device with much of the same lovely software enhancement suite that comes with Windows Phone 8 on the Lumia lineup. Here you’ll likely be seeing a much more affordable version of the hero devices also coming up this week. Like the rest of the line, this phone appears to have a flat front screen.

There’s also been a Nokia Lumia 820 appearing with Windows Phone 8 aboard. This device appeared right alongside the 920 PureView in a single underground news blast, both of them working with Windows Phone 8, but the 820 having slightly less powerful specifications. The 920 will likely be sold with its camera being the main point of interest while the 820 will be appearing as the hero line of standard Windows Phone 8 smartphone – it’ll also have slightly rounder edges and will be appearing in purple, blue, gray, black, white, yellow, and red.

The final release date for Windows Phone 8 is currently looking quite likely for October 29th, 2012. Because of this, each of the Windows Phone 8 smartphones that have been shown off so far – and will be shown off this week – will probably be showing up on carriers late in October as well.

As a bit of a bonus, it seems, Nokia has also shown off – and officially, this time, mind you – a couple of audio hardware lines of products. FIrst take a peek at the Nokia / JBL NFC speakers announced last week during IFA. Then have a look at the Nokia Purity Pro Wireless headphones that are made – just as the NFC cans are – to match the color pallet of the Lumia line perfectly. These headphones are manufactured by Monster and will also be connecting to your devices using NFC.

Remember to tune in on September 5th at 9:30AM EST right here on SlashGear to see what Nokia actually brings to the table with Microsoft at their side. It’s time for more color, that’s for sure!

Nokia Lumia wireless charging pad breaks cover

Nokia Lumia wireless charging pad breaks cover

That was quick: we’d heard rumors through The Verge of wireless charging coming to the repeatedly leaked Lumia 920 alongside a pseudo-PureView camera, and the mysterious @evleaks has come through with what looks to be press photos showing the wireless charging pad in action. As long as they’re more than just wild imaginings, they reveal a puck-like surface that could juice up both the Lumia 920 and the less ambitious 820. We don’t know much more about the charger, although it’s expected to use Qi and wouldn’t limit the phones and pad to coupling solely with each other. We’ll know the bigger picture on September 5th; in the meantime, check after the break for a bonus picture showing both Windows Phone 8 devices with an unnamed Bluetooth headset (likely a Luna variant) that might join the charger in Nokia’s accessory line.

Nokia Lumia 920 tipped for wireless charging but just 8MP PureView

Nokia‘s Lumia 920 PureView Windows Phone 8 handset, expected to be unveiled officially in New York on Wednesday, will feature wireless charging and an 8-megapixel camera, according to new leaks. The flagship device, press photos of which apparently leaked late last month, will support the Qi wireless power standard according to The Verge‘s sources, for easier recharging.

That will work using a magnetic strip embedded in the back of the Lumia 920, and will be compatible with other Qi-certified wireless charging devices. We’ve seen smartphones feature wireless power before – notably Palm/HP’s webOS handsets – but the technology has yet to see a significant boost in the marketplace.

Other specifications include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, the tipsters say, along with 32GB of internal storage. The display will measure in at 4.5-inches and run at HD resolution (presumably 1280 x 720), and be topped by a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

However, while Nokia will apparently use its PureView branding on the Lumia 920, the handset won’t get anywhere near the 41-megapixel camera of the 808 PureView. Instead, the 8-megapixel shooter will supposedly be paired with a new image stabilization system, as well as a new camera software.

That’s because PureView isn’t just about raw megapixels but the technology Nokia combines to improve mobile photography. The 808 PureView is successful because it uses clever software that uses multiple clusters of pixels to produce more accurate stills: each pixel in its default, 5-megapixel images combine data from seven pixels on the sensor, allowing the handset to throw out any glitches and get more accurate colors.

It’s not clear if Nokia will therefore be setting the Lumia 920 PureView’s default resolution to 5- or even 2-megapixels – the 808 PureView produced incredible shots, for instance, even at 2MP – or if this branding is a fudge of marketing and capabilities. We’ll know more on September 5, when SlashGear covers the Nokia/Microsoft event!

Purported HTC Accord Windows Phone schema leaked on Twitter

HTC Accord images purportedly leaked from Windows Phone ROM

While certain other manufacturers claim a lot of the Windows Phone column inches, there are other players in the game. An image that recently popped up on Twitter reminds us that HTC is also a supporter of Microsoft’s mobile OS. The picture above claims to be a possible schema for a forthcoming handset, which the poster believes to be the HTC Accord. The account belongs to a prolific XDA-Developer user with a history of Windows Phone ROMS, so it’s entirely possible this was found somewhere along the way. Likewise, though, we’ll have to take this with the requisite amount of salt. There’s not much in the way of specification to be gleaned here, either, but at the least we can get a sense of what the design style might be like going forward. We just need to wait now for the official product launch event to join the ever-growing list.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 31, 2012

We’ve officially entered the final hours of August, and in typical SlashGear fashion, we’re sending thing off with a bang. Today’s IFA adventures didn’t produce as much news as the two days before it, but we still have plenty of hands-on posts for you to check out, just like yesterday. We got to check out a couple of Dell’s upcoming products today, spending some hands-on time with the Dell XPS Duo 12 and the more traditional Dell XPS 10. Dell wasn’t the only one showing off new computers and a tablets today though, as we also have a hands-on with HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4, SpectreXT and ENVY x2, along with a hands-on post for the new Toshiba Satellite U920t.

We also got to have a look a bunch of interesting devices and accessories today, ranging from the Lifeproof case for the iPhone4/4S and the Jarba Soulmate to the E-Ink concept phone and the iRobot Scooba 390 and 290. It was definitely an exciting day for new gadgets and devices, so be sure to look through all of those hands-on posts.

The next iPhone made an appearance in some new images today, and in them we get an idea of its measurements. Speaking of rumored iDevices, the iPad Mini has apparently popped in one app developer’s device files, and Apple may eventually face an iPhone 5 stock bottleneck due to a shortage of screens at Sharp. The Nokia Lumia 920 PureView and Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 handsets suffered a leak today (complete with images of the Lumia 820 Arrow later in the day), and Facebook had to revise its profit forecast by slashing $1 billion from it.

We were introduced to a slew of Windows 8 products today, most of which belong to Lenovo. This includes the Lenovo IdeaCentre A520, the IdeaPad Z series of notebooks, the IdeaPad U510 ultrabook and the Lenovo IdeaCentre B340 and B545 all-in-one PCs. Acer got in on the Windows 8 action as well, introducing the world to the Acer Aspire M3.

It may not be long before your Samsung device can react to your body language, today we seemed to get confirmation that the iPhone 5 is on the way with a new iPhone “recycling” program, and a round of Xbox-branded games have been confirmed for Windows 8 PCs. On the same day that reported images of the next Kindle Fire leaked, we get word that Amazon is planning to announce two new Kindle Fires at its press conference on September 6. The Samsung Galaxy Stellar appears to be hitting Verizon on that same day, and finally tonight, Bethesda has hinted that Skyrim‘s first DLC, Dawnguard, may not make it to the PS3.

That’s all for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy your weekend folks, and be sure to keep checking back with us here at SlashGear for more news from IFA 2012!

Beats Audio tipped for HTC Windows Phone 8 devices

With Windows Phone 8 reportedly launching on October 29, the rumor mill has been working overtime lately. The latest Windows Phone 8 rumor comes courtesy of The Verge and concerns HTC. Apparently, HTC’s Windows Phone 8 devices will come with support for Beats Audio, which isn’t all that surprising to hear considering that HTC has partnered with Beats in the past.

Apparently, this Windows Phone 8 team up will start with the HTC Accord. If the rumors are to be believed, the Accord will be revealed alongside the Zenith and Rio during the third week in September. It’s then that HTC will supposedly reveal its Windows Phone 8 line up, and Beats Audio should be right there with these new WP8 devices.

The Verge’s sources, who are “close to HTC’s Windows Phone plans,” say that the Accord will come with a special Beats Audio Windows Phone app, which will allow users to control their phone’s audio output. HTC is also apparently considering Beats Audio implementation in the Zenith and Rio, which would make sense – especially in the case of the Zenith. After all, the Zenith is said to be HTC’s flagship WP8 device, so it seems unlikely that the Accord would get Beats Audio integration and the Zenith would be left without.

The Accord is also said to feature Beats Audio branding on the backside of the device (just like the HTC One X pictured above), which suggests that the folks at Beats had some say in the hardware that comprises the Accord. HTC obviously wants this Beats Audio integration to make its handsets stick out from those offered by other manufacturers, but will it work? That remains to be seen. Stay tuned, because we should hopefully be finding out if this latest rumor is true within the next few weeks.

Nokia Lumia 820 Arrow photos leak with WP8 aboard

A collection of hands-on photos have appeared with a next-generation Nokia smartphone with the Nokia Lumia 820, also known as the Nokia Arrow, running Windows Phone 8. This device has appeared before in code-name only while today’s leak includes several photos of the device itself – notably on the same morning of another leak of Nokia devices with PureView branding and Windows Phone 8 running as well. These Arrow photos show a rather thin device with a white back casing and large-lens-toting camera with single LED flash.

This device has been rumored to be working with a 4.3-inch display and a collection of mid-range specifications such as 480 x 800 pixel resolution. The device shown here is identified with 335MB of RAM with 512MB RAM likely in total. The casing of this device is rather similar to the first generation of Lumia devices and the phone will likely be released with a variety of color options for its back.

On the device’s home screen you can see Xbox software as well as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office and the tinier icons which identify this system as Apollo. Code-name Apollo is what Windows Phone 8 had been working under before it was formally identified as Windows Phone 8, and this system shows OS version 8.0.9735.0 running currently. This unit also shows a date of Tuesday the 26th, which means its either been taken in a different month than we’re in right now, or it was set incorrectly.

Have a peek in our Nokia timeline for Windows Phone 8 below to gain additional hints and tips on what we’re going to end up seeing on the 5th – next week! Be there early in the day as we head to New York to get the full lo-down on what Microsoft and Nokia are going to be presenting to the world – neatness on the way!

Nokia Lumia 820 prototype breaks cover in photos, confirms little else

Nokia 820 prototype breaks cover in photos, confirms little else

Renders, shmenders. According to Coolxap.com what you see above is a real-world prototype of the Nokia Lumia 820 — aka Nokia Arrow. As well as some tantalizing hardware shots, we get a sneaky glimpse at that all important “About phone” page. All we can see, though, is that it’s running Windows Phone 8 (shock) and has only 335MB of RAM? Though, being a prototype, that’s likely to change. Sadly little else of note, but it’s at least good to see that while the mock-ups were close, the real thing has a little more going for it.

Nokia Lumia 920 PureView and Lumia 820 WP8 phones reportedly leak

What’s purportedly Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 smartphone line-up, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, has leaked, showing slick unibody devices running Microsoft’s refreshed OS. The two apparent press images were shared by evleaks (2), along with some basic specs, and it’s the Lumia 920 that we’re most excited about: it will apparently be the first Nokia Windows Phone to bear PureView branding.

That’s Nokia’s high-quality photography brand, so far only seen on the Nokia 808 PureView. Exactly what resolution the Lumia 920 might offer is unspecified – the 808 runs in at 41-megapixels, though there’s no way Nokia could fit that oversized sensor into something the size of the Windows Phone pictured – but we do know it has a 4.5-inch display.

As for the Nokia Lumia 820, that doesn’t apparently have PureView branding, but an LED flash is clear from the leaked photo. It also has a 4.3-inch display, the tipster claims.

Nokia is expected to join with Microsoft for a Windows Phone 8 event on September 5, where the companies will officially launch the new platform. However, previous rumors have suggested that three Nokia devices will be shown, not two.
