Nokia and JBL announce new portable NFC speakers for Lumia

Today Nokia announced that it has teamed up with JBL to introduce a new line of speakers meant to be paired with the Lumia. The full name of this new line is called “JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker for Nokia,” and they appear to be real attention-getters. In a post on Conversations with Nokia, the company’s Ian Delaney went through what we can expect from these PlayUp speakers, starting right off with the eye catching color and the similarities users are bound to see between these and the Play 360° speakers Nokia began offering last year.

The PlayUp speakers certainly are reminiscent of the Play 360° speaker, but we’re thinking that the color has more to do with that than anything else. As you can see in the image above, the speakers come in four colors – cyan, black, white and bright yellow. On the outside, we’ve got “specially created double-shot plastic” which makes for a more durable speaker, and though we don’t get many specifics about the speaker’s innards, Nokia says that this bad boy is capable of a maximum output of 89dB. In other words, this tiny thing (its dimensions are 118 x 118 x 128mm and it weighs 760g) can get pretty loud.

You’ve got a pretty big range when it comes to frequency response, which comes in at 85Hz – 22kHz (-6dB). Users can connect their phones through Bluetooth or, in the case of next-generation Lumias running Windows Phone 8, through NFC. Of course, Nokia isn’t about to leave anyone out in the cold, so if you’ve got a phone that doesn’t have Bluetooth or NFC, you can connect your device to the speaker through a 3.5mm jack. To top things off, we’re told that the battery lasts for 10 hours before needing a recharge.

There isn’t a solid release date for the PlayUp speakers yet, but Nokia says that they’ll begin shipping “before the end of the year.” While we don’t know the release date, we do know the price – picking up one of these will set you back €149, which is around $187. The PlayUp speaker is only the first product of Nokia’s partnership with JBL, and we’re told that more is on the way in the future. Stay tuned.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 29, 2012

It’s IFA week, which means that we had a lot of news flooding out of Germany. Let’s get to it, shall we? Samsung and Sony both had a ton of big reveals today, and all of the coverage you could ever hope for is collected in our Samsung IFA 2012 Wrap-Up and our Sony IFA 2012 Wrap-Up. In those posts, you’ll find links to all of the major reveals and announcements both companies made today, as well links to our hands-on posts with the day’s major devices. Be sure to check those out if you’re looking for a recap of the news from Samsung and Sony’s events.

The was still some news coming out of IFA that didn’t concern Samsung or Sony, however. ASUS, for instance, revealed the Vivo Tab and the Vivo Tab RT alongside its new MX279H and MX239H monitors. Toshiba also had a reveal of its own, pulling the veil off the slide-out Satellite U925t Ultrabook, and later in the day, Epic Games and NVIDIA teamed up to announce that they’re bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows RT and Windows 8.

TiVo’s new Stream transcoder is arriving next week, and Logitech UE announced a new line of products aimed at those who like to listen to music on the go. Today we got yet another image of the Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE, while Google is now offering a Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Speaking of Google, it appears that the company wants to sell off Motorola’s Home Business division, and today it rolled out a handful of new Google+ features for businesses to take advantage of. Today President Barack Obama took to Reddit to answer questions from citizens, managing to bring the website down in the process, and Apple’s requested ban on Samsung devices has been pushed back to December.

YouTube has updated its app for Xbox 360, ARCHOS announced its new GamePad today, and Netgear announced the new N750 wireless router and gaming Wi-Fi adapter today as well. Current whispers are telling us that Windows Phone 8 will be launching on October 29, while Vimeo announced a new team up with Dropbox. Bethesda says that the PS3 delay of Dawnguard wasn’t caused by its development on Hearthfire, and the Curisoity rover’s transmission of will.i.am’s “Reach for the Stars” from the surface of Mars went off without a hitch. SkyDive is now available on Android, and finally tonight, Joss Whedon is apparently working on a ABC pilot called S.H.I.E.L.D. – we don’t need to tell you Marvel fans why that’s exciting.

Enjoy the rest of your evening folks, and be sure to keep an ear to SlashGear for more from IFA 2012!

Windows Phone 8 Will Be Out on October 29th? [Windows Phone]

Samsung IFA 2012 Wrap-Up

We had a busy day at IFA 2012, thanks in no small part to Samsung, which had a ton of announcements for its Unpacked presentation. In the weeks leading up to IFA 2012, we had a feeling that Samsung would reveal the Galaxy Note II, the follow-up to the successful Galaxy Note. Sure enough Samsung made the Galaxy Note II official during Unpacked, just as we were suspecting.

We, of course, have a hands-on with Samsung’s latest phablet for you to check out, but the Galaxy Note II wasn’t the only device that got a reveal at IFA 2012 today. The Samsung Galaxy Camera was revealed as well, and we spent some quality time with it shortly afterward. Samsung also further detailed a pair of new Windows 8 slates – the Series 7 and Series 5 – alongside the Series 5 ULTRA refreshed, a new touch laptop running Windows 8.

As the day went on, the Galaxy Note II got even more attention, as Samsung saying that the new device will be hitting the United States later on in the year. We also compared the Galaxy Note II to the original Galaxy Note, and then we compared it to a more traditional 10.1-inch tablet (in this case, it’s the Note 10.1). How does the Galaxy Note II stack up? You’ll just have to check out those stories to find out.

The ATIV S Windows Phone 8 got a reveal today, as did a pair of Samsung Windows tablets – the ATIV Smart PC Pro and the ATIV Tab, which runs Windows RT. Intrigued by a Samsung Windows 8 tablet? You’re in luck, because it just so happens that we have a hands-on with the ATIV Smart PC Pro and a hands-on with the ATIV Tab. Qualcomm announced that its S4 processors will be powering both the ATIV S and the ATIV Tab, while Samsung promised that Jelly Bean will soon be coming to the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 10.1.

Finally, Samsung did indeed talk about its loss to Apple in the high-profile patent case that wrapped up last week. We’ll have plenty more news from IFA 2012 in the coming days, so keep it right here at SlashGear for all you need to know!

Windows Phone 8 launch date tipped for October 29

A tipster with information on Microsoft and the launch of their next-generation mobile operating system Windows Phone 8 has let it be known that October 29th will be the day. This information comes from ZDNet where they’ve gotten word from this anonymous source familiar with the matter that October will be one massively important month for Microsoft. October 25th appears to still be the day that Windows 8 will be launching, but now it’ll be coming with a launch of Surface RT as well. Right after this, on October 29th, Windows Phone 8 will pop up as well – and of course October 30th is the start of Microsoft’s Build 2012 conference too!

When October 25th rolls around, several manufacturers will be launching massive products for the masses, each of them with Windows 8 or Surface RT. With Windows 8 and Surface RT ARM-based devices being ready for action overnight, the whole world will change – but not quite entirely until the 29th of that month. On the 29th of October, Microsoft has been tipped as readying Windows Phone 8 for the rest of the devices on the market – that covers desktop computing as well as the whole mobile universe.

The 29th of October will be the “launch” of Windows Phone 8, and with it will come an avalanche of devices – just like the original launch of Windows Phone 7 over a year ago. Remember the excitement the technology universe expressed when Microsoft first made an effort to re-initiate their mobile offering with that OS? It was awesome! We promise. Now we’re getting pumped up for not only Microsoft to bring the heat, but their partners as well.

Samsung made it clear that they’re bringing a lovely Galaxy-like styling to the Windows Phone 8 universe with the ATIV S while Nokia has an event set up for early next month with their own set of next-generation devices. Can you even believe that Apollo is near?!

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th, just days after its desktop brother

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th

Word on the street is that Windows Phone 8 will get its official launch on October 29th. When asked for confirmation, Microsoft issued a pretty standard “no comment,” which leads us to believe there might actually be something to this rumor. With Windows 8 slated to land on October 26th, we wouldn’t be surprised to see its portable counterpart hit the market just a few days later, as ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley is suggesting. October is already expected to be a rather hectic month for Microsoft, with launch of countless Windows 8 tablets scheduled. Putting WP8 out alongside its first batch of handsets (hello ATIV S!) would only make sense, really. We can think of a reason or two that Microsoft might want to utterly dominate a few news cycles.

Qualcomm brings S4 power to Samsung ATIV Tab and S

Just in case you didn’t catch it in the whirlwind of announcements that were laid down today at IFA 2012 by Samsung, Qualcomm has announced that their ultra-powerful Snapdragon S4 processor lineup will be bringing the heat to the ATIV S smartphone and ATIV Tab tablet. The ATIV Tab tablet running Windows RT while the ATIV S is set to be one of the very first Windows Phone 8 devices to hit the market this Fall. The Qualcomm team’s Snapdragon lineup also remains the only set of processor to power Windows Phone, 100% of them, the whole world over.

With the Qualcomm Snapdragon line of processor, it’s assured by the manufacturer that the user is getting “seamless integration and collaboration between hardware, software, and services.” This is of course because Qualcomm manufactures other gear inside the devices they have their processors in as well, and offer software solutions for sharing and media wizardry of all kinds. With Windows RT (the mobile tablet version of Windows 8) on this Samsung tablet and Windows Phone 8 on the ATIV S, you’ll have a full Qualcomm experience in both next-level hardware universes.

Have a peek at our Samsung tag link for more information on everything that’s been revealed today, and stay tuned to our IFA 2012 portal as well to make sure you’ve got information on everything that’s going down all week. We’ll have hands-on with devices of all kinds, Samsung and Qualcomm included, throughout the week!

Here’s Your First Look at a Windows Phone 8 Phone (Updated) [Windows Phone 8]

We’re looking forward to seeing what Nokia’s got coming for Windows Phone next week. But in the meantime, here’s the first look at a WP8 phone—one made by Samsung!—from Microsoft’s blog. More »

Samsung ATIV S 4.8-inch Windows Phone 8 handset made of metal

On stage with so many products it’d make your head spin, Samsung revealed a brand new Windows Phone 8 smartphone for the masses at IFA 2012. This device comes with full Microsoft certification and Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) onboard when it launches and will have no less than a massive 4.8-inch display right out of the gate. And that’s no Galaxy device, folks, it’s most certainly a physical Windows Phone 8-branded center key you’re seeing.

This smartphone takes on the appearance of Samsung’s most elite line of Android-powered devices with a few differences, notably the operating system inside. You’ll be working with full Windows Phone 8, as revealed earlier this year, and all the connections and Windows 8 compatibility that comes with it. The display you’re working with is 4.8-inches with HD Super AMOLED technology to make sure you’re super bright and sharp to the max.

Inside you’ll find a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor from Qualcomm, specially tuned for Windows Phone 8 – that’s slightly different from the Android universe once again. You’ll still have all the fantastic architecture that the Snapdragon line offers including image processing, multi-core processing, and fabulous power management. You’ve also got 1GB of RAM and both 16GB and 32GB internal storage models.

This device is made up of mostly brushed aluminum – that’s not plastic back there – and Gorilla Glass up front. The whole device is 8.7mm thick and is able to work with microSD cards with its single slot for memory expansion. This device was exposed by Microsoft in a blog post right before the main IFA event showed it off, this also bringing the hands-on photos you see above and below – more soon via our IFA 2012 tag link!

Samsung ATIV S Revealed: Windows Phone 8, 4.8″ HD Display, 1.5GHz Dual-Core Processor

ativ1b

Sorry Nokia, consider your thunder stolen. It hasn’t yet made an appearance at Samsung’s big IFA press conference inside the Berlin Tempodrom, but Samsung’s first Windows Phone 8 device has just been made official thanks to a post on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Blog.

That device in question is the ATIV (Ah-TEEV, not EYY-tiv) S, a rather handsome new handset that sports a (sadly unspecified) 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing counterpart to boot.

Update (5:02PM ET): Neither Samsung nor Microsoft dug into what kind of processor the ATIV S has under the hood, but Qualcomm confirmed to PC Magazine that it’s an MSM8260A. That’s the same chipset seen in the U.S. variants of the HTC One X and Galaxy S III so the ATIV won’t leave you wanting for horsepower, but it means LTE is definitely off the table.

The spec sheet may not be the most riveting you’ll ever see — Windows Phone has never really required bleeding edge hardware — but the move puts the pressure on Nokia to unveil something tremendous next week.

The ATIV S features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display swathed in Gorilla Glass, which may make it a bit of a handful (its size puts it right up there in Galaxy S III territory) — but there’s little question that Samsung knows how to make a big device feel smaller than it actually is. The fact that the ATIV S squeezes all that into a brushed aluminum 8.7mm thick chassis (the Galaxy S III is only just a hair thinner at 8.6mm) certainly doesn’t hurt. What really lends the ATIV some star power is that it’s the world’s first Windows Phone 8 device, though it may be a while before the rest of us get to see how well the software complements the hardware.

Users will be able to pick up a 16 or 32GB model at some point in the near future — no one has mentioned availability yet — but they can rest easy knowing that at long last they’ll be able to throw a microSD card into their Windows Phone.
