Samsung 4.8-inch ATIV S Windows Phone 8 smartphone leaks

Those rumors about Samsung naming their new Windows Phone lineup the “ATIV” appear to be quite accurate after today’s latest leak. It looks as if Samsung is getting prepared to launch a few new Windows devices and today we have our first look at the 4.8-inch ATIV S Windows Phone 8 smartphone. It isn’t quite the Galaxy S III — but sure comes close.

Samsung plans to be one of if not the first to announce a Windows Phone 8 smartphone, and that is stacking up to be the above pictured ATIV S. This phone will indeed be their flagship WP8 device if rumors are true, and it packs just as much punch as its Android counterpart.

The Samsung ATIV S will be sporting a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with an unknown resolution but most likely 1280 x 720p. Under the hood will be a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor (probably Qualcomm’s S4) along with an 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.9 MP front shooter as well. Other specs have not been detailed or leaked at this time.

The pictures, leaked by The Verge, shows some similarities to the Galaxy S III with a few subtle changes like the speaker being placed down below instead of near the camera. Otherwise they appear to be extremely similar in design, size, and thickness. We are hearing Samsung could possibly unveil this new flagship Windows Phone 8 device at IFA 2012 during their Samsung Unpacked event. That will be starting under the hour so stay tuned for full details as we are here live! Follow along at our IFA Hub for all the news.

Samsung Ativ Tab and Ativ S details leak, hint at a Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 power duo

Samsung Ativ Tab and Ativ S details leak, hint a Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 power duo

Remember those Ativ Tab and Ativ S trademarks we saw just a couple of days ago? They may well be more than just Samsung’s daydreams. As long as details at The Verge prove true, the devices attached to those names represent a two-pronged revival of Samsung’s Windows-based mobile strategy. We’re most interested in the Ativ S: thanks in part to Windows Phone 8’s multi-core support, it’s effectively a Galaxy S III for the Microsoft crowd with a similar 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front shooter. Swinging attention to the Ativ Tab shows what’s likely to be a commonplace list of features for a Windows RT slate. Outside of the 10.1-inch screen, it’s sporting its own 1.5GHz dual-core chip and 1.9-megapixel front camera as well as a 5-megapixel rear sensor, HDMI video out and USB. We’re still missing a slew of details, such as storage and launch dates, although we might not have to wait long at all to know — if the claims are correct, one or both of the Ativ models may show their faces at Samsung’s IFA 2012 events.

Nokia’s unsafe cyclist promises ‘things are about to change’ in confusing new teaser (video)

Nokias unsafe cyclists promises things are about to change in confusing new teaser video

We know that Nokia’s got something big planned for September 5th, and we’re reasonably sure that it’s going to be the company’s new Windows Phone 8 flagship. To whet our appetites, it’s released a 21-second teaser featuring a helmet-free cyclist smiling at the camera and not spending enough time watching where she’s going. We can’t find any clues in the footage (after the break), except that it’s using the same font that we saw in the run up to the Pureview launch. Who knows, maybe we can get our hopes up for a Lumia device rocking that 41-megapixel sensor.

Samsung trademarks Ativ Tab and Ativ S names, may give a peek into its Windows (Phone) 8 world

Samsung trademarks Ativ Tab and Ativ S names, may give a peek into its Windows Phone 8 worldEveryone knows that Samsung is making a big Windows 8 push at IFA, but there’s new signs emerging that it might shake up its naming scheme in the process. We now know through SamMobile that Samsung has quietly snapped up a pair of trademarks with the Ativ badge that would let its branding venture beyond the Galaxy. Ativ Tab is the most conspicuous: unless Samsung is planning a shakeup of its Android slates, there’s a distinct chance we’re looking at the future name for one or more Windows 8 tablets. Ativ S is slightly more nebulous, although that very familiar oversized S raises the possibility of a high-end Windows Phone 8 smartphone like the Odyssey. Whether or not Samsung wields these trademarks later this week, or at all in the near future, is still up in the air — it may be holding on to names as a precaution rather than previewing a course of action. If the Ativ label makes its way into stores, though, it may give Samsung a much catchier (if not entirely intuitive) name for its Windows devices than Series 5 Hybrid PC.

Video out enabled on Windows Phone 7, just not for you

Video out enabled on Windows Phone 7, just not for you

The video out feature in Windows Phone 7 is reserved for select Microsoft employees, and now one enterprising member of the XDA Developers forum. With certain files ripped from an LG Panther 7003 ROM, the help of someone on the inside and many months of work, forum member marsrogers succeeded in pushing video from his Samsung Focus to a companion PC app. Don’t get too excited though — this particular trick will not be released to the masses so the MS confidant involved is not exposed. However, it’s not all bad news, as marsrogers’ source reports that Windows Phone 8 will have remote desktop capability straight out of the box. Sadly, for those of you carrying around current-gen WP devices, there’s still no hope.

Nokia Windows Phone 8 smartphone details tipped for NYC event

September 5th will be the day that Microsoft and Nokia hold an event in New York to bring on not two, but three new Windows Phone 8 Apollo devices. This set of three devices will be nicknamed “Arrow”, “Phi”, and “Atlas” per sources familiar with the matter speaking with The Verge. These devices will be part of Nokia’s Lumia lineup and each of their names are certainly subject to change.

Both devices are said to be heading to AT&T as their primary carrier, with the Arrow also heading to T-Mobile as well. The Arrow will be a mid-range device while the Phi will be a hero device, and a Atlas will popping up on Verizon as an equivalent to the Arrow. The Arrow and the Atlas are set to be near-identical devices to one another, not appearing at the moment to be all that far off from what we’ve seen in the Nokia Lumia 710 in size and stature.

The Phi smartphone will be coming with a curved display not unlike the Nokia Lumia 900 currently available at AT&T. This device will appear with a polycarbonate body in a variety of colors and will be quite similar in high-quality build to the Lumia range currently on the market. We’re expecting boosts in camera quality as well as display sharpness, but the overall hardware aesthetic will quite likely be pretty much the same.

This lineup will be the first large frontal assault by Microsoft via Nokia on the world with their Windows Phone 8 – nicknamed Apollo – software. This software will tie in with the release of Windows 8 for desktops and tablets as well as Windows RT for tablets, both of them coming quite soon to the market as well. Microsoft also released a brand update for the first time in 25 years this morning that you’ll certainly want to check out too.

We’ll be live in effect at the event where these devices will be unveiled, so join us on the day – that’s September 5th bright and early, right here on SlashGear!

Nokia Said To Reveal “Arrow” And “Phi” Windows Phone 8 Devices On September 5

Nokia-Phi-Windows-Phone

Nokia is expected to pull back the curtains on its new slew of Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia phones on September 5, but the Finnish phone company has been agonizingly vague about what it intends to show off. That said, some new intel may have just shed new light on Nokia’s hardware plans.

According to The Verge’s sources, Nokia plans to reveal a duo of new Lumia phones — nicknamed “Arrow” and “Phi” respectively — the latter of which is apparently poised to take over the flagship crown of the Lumia line when it launches.

Rumors of the Phi have been winging their way around the geekier parts of the web for a few weeks now, and the supposed spec sheet certainly looks like a treat. Notorious Russian gadgeteer Eldar Murtazin purported that the slimmed-down Phi will sport a hefty 4.7-inch AMOLED display and a (gasp!) microSD card slot, while others pointed to the inclusion of an LTE radio, a dual-core Qualcomm chipset, and Nokia’s handsome polycarbonate body.

The Verge’s Tom Warren reports that AT&T is going to throw much of its weight behind the Phi (much like the carrier did with the Lumia 900), but the extent of that marketing push remains to be seen.

The Arrow, on the other hand, is something of an unknown quantity. The existence of a new Lumia device with a 4 or 4.3-inch screen have been thrown around a lot lately, and Warren notes that the mid-range device will hit both AT&T and T-Mobile in due course. If true, the move seems to echo Nokia’s plan for the original unveiling of the Lumia line at Nokia World last year, in which the top-tier Lumia 800 was officially revealed alongside the mid-range Lumia 710 — you’ve got to love the symmetry.

Oh, and in case you were curious, those (awfully lame) monikers are just temporary, and will probably get swapped out in favor of a blander model number soon enough. Lumia 1001, anyone?

Nokia Phi Windows Phone 8 specs “confirmed” by Eldar Murtazin

A week ago we reported that alleged photos of Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 handset, Phi, were leaked. While it remains to be seen as to whether those photos are indeed legitimate, famed Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin who seems to have the privilege of getting his hands on Nokia devices before anyone else, has spoken with Russian website Obozrevatel and basically “confirmed” the Nokia Phi’s specs. We say “confirm” because even though Murtazin has a reputation for getting it right, there’s always the off-chance that Nokia could surprise us.

In any case for those curious, the Nokia Phi is expected to sport a massive 4.7” display, a microSD card slot and is reportedly thinner than both the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. He also stated that despite the battery of the Phi being larger than the Lumia 800 and 900, oddly enough it did not last as long. There is a good chance that might have something to do with software as we’re sure Nokia and Microsoft are currently tweaking Windows Phone 8 as best as they can before its release. Murtazin also expects the Phi to be priced in Russia for $935 and that we will see it officially announced on the 5th of September.

HTC Arrive makes its exit, leaves Sprint with a Windows Phone-shaped hole

HTC Arrive review angle

Call it the end to a brief chapter in the Windows Phone saga. While there had been murmurs that the HTC Arrive was on its way out soon, any doubt has been removed now that the smartphone has vanished from Sprint’s website and is likely on the endangered list at retail stores. The QWERTY slider’s retirement leaves Sprint without any sort of Windows Phone in its roster, cutting the number of major US carriers backing Microsoft’s platform down to three. Before you ask, we honestly don’t know if the CDMA provider has a replacement waiting in the wings anytime soon: rumors of a Sprint Windows Phone 8 model surfaced as early as March, but the Yellow Swoosh network was nowhere to be seen among the Windows Phone 8 launch partners slated for this fall. The gap is conspicuous enough that Sprint subscribers may need a heaping amount of patience if they’re not willing to switch networks for a Windows Phone fix in the near future.
