HTC Windows Phone 8 announcement expected in September

Not long after the Windows Phone Summit in June we heard word that HTC was putting together three Windows Phone 8 handsets that would be released later in the year. Chinese website WPDang now believes that those handsets will be officially announced during the third week of September, a few weeks after Nokia and Microsoft introduce the first Windows Phone 8 devices at Nokia World on September 5th.

WPDang believes that HTC will make an official presentation in either New York or London, although the exact details haven’t been confirmed yet. The announcement of the handsets is expected in September with the Rio and Accord due to ship in October, while the Zenith will come later in the fourth quarter.

Details of HTC’s new Windows Phone 8 handsets first emerged in June. The Zenith is HTC’s flagship Windows Phone model, reportedly featuring a 4.7-inch Super LCD2 display with a 720p resolution along with an Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor. The Accord is the mid-range handset, featuring a 4.3-inch 720p Super LCD2 display and dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, while the Rio is an entry-level offering with a 4-inch WVGA screen and Snapdragon S4 Plus CPU.

HTC’s announcement may come later on in September, but Nokia has been tipped to unveil its own Windows Phone 8 lineup at Nokia World on September 5th. WPDang reported in July that Nokia is preparing two new handsets, the Lumia 910 and Lumia 920, with Microsoft due to make an appearance to showcase additional consumer oriented features of Windows Phone 8.

Editorial: when the ecosystem is the product, picking a favorite isn’t easy

You Are Your Ecosystems

Have you ever taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality test? If not, you will eventually fail in a happy hour when people compare their personality-type acronyms. I took the test years ago, and have no recollection of my official personality type. ENTJ (Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging)? ISFP (Introverted, Sensual, Feeling, Perceiving)? No idea.

But I can tell you this: I am a WiBG digital citizen. That is my Ecosystem Type Indicator. Back to that in a minute. First, some ecosystem history.

Windows Phone 8 does file transfer via Bluetooth

They say that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and I truly believe that after more than three decades of walking this earth, this particular saying holds true, straight to the point like an arrow. Well, there is no one truly invincible mobile operating system out there in the market, although you can say that iOS is certainly one of the more popular ones out there. The thing is, there are other mobile operating systems apart from iOS if you were to keep your eyes peeled – Android being one, with Windows Phone being an up and coming candidate. Windows Phone 8 might be the future, offering a fluid user experience, and it certainly does away with its Achilles Heel – that is, the inability to transfer a file over a Bluetooth connection.

This was made known through a publication of Windows Phone 8′s Bluetooth profile which has appeared online, where it comes with all the relevant bits and pieces required to perform a wireless file transfer. For Windows Phone 7 users, there are always third-party apps for you to choose from to get jiggy with Bluetooth file transfer.

Microsoft Build 2012 tickets go up for grabs

Microsoft has thrown open ticket sales for Build 2012, the latest gathering of Windows and Windows Phone developers, which kicks off in late October. The event will unsurprisingly focus on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, two platforms with no small degree of importance to Microsoft’s financial future and relevance in the computing and smartphone spaces. However, it’s not cheap to attend.

Early-bird tickets are priced at $1,595 apiece, though only 500 will be made available. After that, full-price tickets at $2,095 each, while there will be 100 $995 academic tickets in addition. If you want an academic ticket, you’ll need to contact Microsoft first and request a code.

Build 2012 will take place on Microsoft’s own Redmond campus between October 30 and November 2, and include activities in the surrounding area as well as coding workshops. For the rest of us, the key interest will likely be in the opening keynote; last year, Microsoft used that to launch the Windows 8 developer preview and show off prototype hardware.

This year, Windows 8 will have already been available for roughly a week and we’re expecting to have seen not only fresh Windows Phone 8 devices from Nokia, HTC and others, but Apple’s new iPhone 5. SlashGear will be at the Build 2012 keynote to bring back all the details as they’re announced.

Windows Phone 8 handset spotted in China

What you see above is an alleged Nokia smartphone that could very well be a prototype of an upcoming device, and it has been spotted in China. Of course, it was just kept online for a short while before it was taken down, and needless to say, there are some out there who figured out that this is proof of being a real device, and although some might say that it is rather impossible to tell. Others figured out that this might just be a different colored Lumia 800 that is running a test version of either Windows Phone 8 or Windows Phone 7.8, although there is no way to ascertain the right version of Windows Phone which it runs on.

After all, the new homescreen in Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8 features similar resizable tiles. Alternatively, this might be a prototype Lumia 800 which never made it to the market, and it could very well be someone who installed Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system successfully. The thing is, how come the Windows logo spotted on it is still the previous one that is seen on Windows Phone 7.8?

Microsoft opens Windows Phone Dev Center, limits inapp purchases to Windows Phone 8

It’s a day of mixed blessings if you’re a Windows Phone developer. The upside? Microsoft has shelved its old App Hub in favor of the heavily reworked Windows Phone Dev Center: along with being simpler and more reliable, it now lets app designers offer their apps in four times as many countries (three times as many for paid apps), gives them better tracking tools and lets them at last get payment from Microsoft through PayPal. We hope they aren’t making too many grand plans to bring Microsoft’s newly added in-app purchasing support to every title, however. The counterbalance in this story is confirmation in the Dev Center that any in-app commerce will be limited to Windows Phone 8 — even devices running Windows Phone 7.8 will have to turn to all-or-nothing transactions to directly generate cash. While we can’t say we’re surprised, knowing that Microsoft hadn’t mentioned legacy support before, the news no doubt dampens the enthusiasm for developers who now need to wait for a wave of new devices before they can join the freemium app gold rush.

Update: WMPowerUser noticed something in that tiny text on the home page — the artist formerly known as the Windows Phone Marketplace is now the Windows Phone Store. A small (and still unacknowledged) change, but notable for harmonizing the mobile app shop with the Windows Store on the desktop.

Nokia Windows Phone 8 prototype reportedly leaks

A Windows Phone 8 handed tipped to be among Nokia’s new range has leaked, borrowing the unibody design from the Lumia 800 and 900. Etched as a prototype, the handset shared by WPDang has a distinctive yellow finish- a color we’ve not see Nokia use for its polycarbonate devices to-date – and the offset Nokia logo itself, pushed far to the right of the earpiece, is also new.

The UI also marks the unnamed phone out as potentially something special. The smaller iconography – which now fits up to four Live Tiles to each line – is a feature of Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8; it’s unclear which version of the platform this device is running or, indeed, if it’s merely showing a screenshot of the updated interface.

Muddying the waters is Nokia’s close work with Microsoft and the existing confirmation that the company has been providing reference hardware for Windows Phone testing. One such device, not intended for commercial production, was demonstrated back in June, complete with a dualcore processor, 720p HD display and integrated NFC.

According to the latest rumors, we won’t have long to wait to know the truth. Nokia is expected to announce a press event in early September, shortly after IFA 2012 and ahead of the predicted iPhone 5 unveil, at which it’s tipped to reveal its new Windows Phone 8 line-up. Commercially availability is said to be due before the holiday shopping season.

In-app purchasing feature will be limited to Windows Phone 8 devices only

Windows Phone 8It looks like if you’re not planning on upgrading your current Windows Phone 7 handset to a Windows Phone 8 handset, not only will you not be receiving an upgrade to Windows Phone 8, but it seems that you will not be able to enjoy in-app purchasing either. This was revealed in an MSDN documentation where Microsoft has advised developers that that they can only add in-app products to Windows Phone 8 devices. This has also led to the speculation that due to the lack of in-app purchasing on current Windows Phone devices, there is a chance that these devices will also be missing out on the Wallet Hub functionality as well, which provides support for NFC, contactless payments, deals, loyalty cards and the likes. Windows Phone 7 owners out there, are you guys bummed by this news or were you planning on upgrading to Windows Phone 8 anyway?

Nokia World set to preempt New iPhone with Apollo

If you’re living in the Microsoft universe and love their mobile strategy – and bright colors – you’ll be glad to know that it’s been tipped the Nokia will reveal their next generation of devices with Windows Phone 8 in September. During their next big event, Nokia World, both September 5th and 6th will be the home of a worldwide announcement of Nokia’s newest lineup, complete with Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) software onboard. This will put Nokia’s reveal just one week ahead of what’s generally been accepted as the must-be date for Apple’s next smartphone: September 12th for the new iPhone.

It’s strange to think that Nokia or Microsoft would place the event so close to even the possibility of a new iPhone, especially when Apple just last month noted that anticipation of the new iPhone was so high that it was hurting current iPhone sales significantly. Nokia is ready to come correct, on the other hand, still staying tough with their assurance that Microsoft is their best hope for a revitalization of their brand through the next few years.

This tip comes from Bloomberg where they’ve also mentioned the relatively unimpressive statistics that surround Nokia’s efforts with Windows Phone so far. Nokia sold just 600,000 Lumia devices (their current Windows Phone-toting lineup) last quarter in the USA according to the company itself – but they will not be deterred.

If Nokia is to have a successful second-wave launch of devices here near the Fall of 2012, they’re going to need to jump on board the “everyone” ship like Samsung has with the Galaxy S III. Thus far Samsung has done undeniably well with Galaxy S III sales after just two months of the device being on the market. A large part of the success of the Galaxy S III in the USA has been its near-simultaneous launch on five major mobile networks across the nation.

Nokia – make with the original Google dream for a smartphone and team up with everybody all at once! And if that doesn’t work – you know who has some software you might want to see!

Nokia rumored to unveil Windows Phone 8 devices in September during Nokia World event

Nokia Lumia 800Given that Nokia has pretty much put all of their proverbial eggs into the Windows Phone basket, it is safe to assume that they are currently working on Windows Phone 8 devices, but when exactly can we see the fruits of their efforts? According to the folks at Bloomberg who quoted “a person with knowledge of the matter”, Nokia is set to unveil the company’s new Windows Phone 8 devices in September during the Nokia World event which is taking place on the 5th of September. We guess the choice of location and time isn’t really surprising, and assuming the source is to be believed, the devices unveiled at Nokia World are also expected to go on sale towards the end of the year before the holiday shopping season. No word on what sort of devices we can expect, but here’s hoping that we’ll be in for a treat. Until then, be sure to stay tuned and check back with us regularly as we keep you updated on the situation!
