Nokia Maps updated with support for Groupon Now! deals

If you love Groupon deals and have a phone capable of running Nokia Maps, then boy does Nokia have the update for you. Today, Nokia’s Pino Bonetti announced that Nokia Maps has been updated and now includes support for Groupon Now! deals. This means that you’re never too far from the next great Groupon deal, as Groupon Now! allows you to purchase them and use them immediately. Pretty cool, no?

Bonetti explains the process of buying a Groupon deal on your phone in a post on the Nokia Conversations blog – when you’re looking for something in Nokia Maps, you’ll be alerted to Groupon deals at nearby places. Each deal listed on your map comes with an “exhaustive description,” and deciding to buy one will take you to the Groupon mobile site where you’ll complete your purchase. Unfortunately, those living outside the US are out of luck for the time being, as Groupon Now! deals are currently only available in the US due to their “geographically limited” nature.

Support for Groupon Now! isn’t the only thing Nokia is touting with this update. Nokia has introduced a new feature called “advanced route setting” in this update, which allows users to plan trips within the Nokia Maps app. Select your starting point and destination, tell the app if you’ll be walking, driving, or taking public transportation, and you’re good to go. Nokia also says that users can save the route to their start screen, so it will be ready for future trips.

At this point in time, Nokia Maps is only compatible with the Nokia Lumia 610, 710, 800, and 900, so if you don’t own one of those models, then this update doesn’t apply to you. Users can get the update by either waiting for the notification from the Windows Phone Marketplace or downloading it from the Nokia Collection. It sounds like an excellent update, so if you’re a regular user of Nokia Maps, be sure to grab it.

Nokia Maps for Windows Phone updated with route planner and Groupon integration

Nokia Maps for Windows Phone updated with route planner and Groupon integration

It feels like it was only yesterday that Nokia handed its Windows Phone Maps application a complete and quite hefty makeover, which, as we know, brought the addition of reviews and friends’ photos to the app. Regardless, Nokia Maps appears to be ready to hit version 2.5, bringing with it an all-new Groupon integration to help US folks find nearby deals and a route planner service that, well, should be pretty self-explanatory. At any rate, WMPoweruser says the update should be hitting the Redmond Marketplace sometime “soon,” but feel free to let us know if you happen to catch it a little bit earlier than others.

Now that the dust has settled on the big Windows Phone 8 hoedown, Redmond is filling in the details of all its announcements. To wit, it just released a list of the 180 countries that will get access to its WP marketplace and developer app hub. That number is a big jump from the 63 markets and 38 app hubs of today, and with in-app purchasing coming soon, Microsoft emphasized that point — along with the 100,000 apps in stock — to developers. The software giant also added that the marketplace will filter apps by phone screen resolution and “other key characteristics,” allowing easier targeting of users. To see if your country made the cut, check the source for the very long list.

Twitter for Windows Phone adds push notifications

Windows Phone has had an official Twitter client since launch, but several features have been missing from the app. Chief among them was push notifications, which has been curiously absent from the client even though Microsoft implemented push across the platform via Toast quite some time ago. WPCentral has noticed that the Twitter client has finally received an update to support push notifications.

Version 1.5 in the Windows Phone Marketplace finally grants the app the ability to notify you on certain Twitter interactions. The options include Mentions, Favourited tweets, Retweets, Direct Messages, and New Followers. There are some granular controls too, so you can opt to receive notifications only from people you follow or from everyone. Naturally, you can turn them off if they get too annoying.

The Live Tile for the app doesn’t show a notification counter, but it does flip over to reveal any recent interactions such as mentions. So what are you waiting for, Windows Phone fans? If you’re using the Twitter client, head on over to the Marketplace to grab the update now.
