Microsoft Surface tablet paid a visit to the FCC?

We all know for sure that Microsoft will be rolling out their very own Surface tablet device in due time (at the end of this month, actually) which will run on the Windows RT operating system. Well, before any piece of consumer electronics are released in the US, they will first need to receive relevant approval from the FCC – and it seems that this is just what happened with the Microsoft Surface tablet via a post on the FCC website that depicted uploaded documents which parade a “tablet PC” of sorts that was running on Windows RT. Of course, this is by no means confirmation that it is the Microsoft Surface tablet itself, considering how the tablet is known as “Model 1516″ in its FCC filing, and the world is not aware of any other Windows RT tablets coming to the market other than the Surface.

“Model 1516″ will also come with Bluetooth and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, in addition to a stand and a keyboard peripheral which will be membrane-based. All in all, patience is the operative keyword here as it is just three weeks or so before the Microsoft Surface launches, and we do look forward to the end of October with anticipation.

ASUS VivoTab RT announced for AT&T with 4G LTE and Windows RT

With the Windows 8 wave oncoming quick, it appears to be AT&T that’s taking on the mobile bit of the universe first, here with the ASUS VivoTab RT with 4G LTE amongst others. This device is one that we’ve seen before – announced back during IFA 2012 first of all. It’s got an NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 TE processor inside, works with Windows RT (that’s essentially Windows 8 for tablets, for those of you that do not know), and a 10.1-inch Super IPS display.

This device works with ASUS’ own TruVivid technology for a “remarkably vivid and brilliant viewing experience” – enhancing an IPS display is a feat, and ASUS is ready to take it on, so we’ve seen. This device works with 32GB of internal storage and will be appearing on AT&T’s 4G LTE network rather soon. Just like the Samsung ATIV Smart PC for AT&T revealed earlier, this device will be out by the end of the year, more than likely in time for the holiday shopping season.

This tablet has a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution for a lovely sharp experience and runs with 2 GB RAM inside. You’ll be working with NFC abilities and a docking keyboard as well. This device looks rather similar to what we’ve seen from ASUS’ transformer series in the recent past, particularly similar to the ASUS Transformer Prime. Have a peek at our ASUS Transformer Prime original review for a closer look at what ASUS does in the hardware department – then stay tuned for this Windows-toting experience.

Just as it has been with several AT&T devices announced today, no pricing or release date has been dropped for the ASUS VivoTab RT. It does seem like a lock for 4G LTE, but we’ve yet to get absolute final confirmation on the date. Stay tuned for the release of this and a whole new torrential downpour of devices from AT&T and manufacturers galore, soon!

AT&T snags Samsung ATIV Smart PC with Windows 8

The folks at AT&T are hitting it off big this week with device after device popping up on their network – the newest of these appearing today is the Samsung ATIV Smart PC, a device that can act as a tablet or a clamshell notebook with Windows 8 onboard. This device will be appearing with AT&T here in the United States sometime between when Windows 8 is unleashed on the 26th of this month and the end of the year – sometime in 2012!

What we’ve got here is a device that we’ve had some hands-on time with in the past – though this final iteration may prove to be a slightly different beast than what we saw back at IFA 2012. This iteration has an 11.6-inch HD PLS display working with an Intel Clover Trail 1.5 GHz dual-core processor under the hood and 64GB of internal memory right off the bat. It’s not yet known if you’ll be able to expand memory with a microSD card as many Android-based tablets are prone to be – we’ll see!

This device works with a detachable keyboard-docking system that makes it into a notebook, not unlike a collection of devices have been doing over the past couple of years – see our ASUS Eee Pad Transformer review (the original) for an early favorite. this Samsung device takes on a form factor that’s not entirely unlike the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with its forward-facing speakers and has its very own prevalent Windows 8 icon center bottom for your enjoyment.

This device will be coming with Windows 8 installed, complete with trail versions of several Microsoft Office 2013 apps for productivity galore. This package includes Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well. Of note is the fact that AT&T does not mention what kind of connectivity this device will have – a good guess would be 4G HSPA+ or 3G nationwide – again, we’ll see soon! This device will likely be coming out either at the end of this month or the start of the next, so stay tuned!

AT&T gets its hands on ASUS VivoTab RT and Samsung ATIV Smart PC, wants to put them in yours this holiday

AT&T just packed a one-two punch of holiday tablet news, announcing that it’s going to serve as the exclusive US carrier for both ASUS’s VivoTab RT and Samsung ATIV Smart PC, both of which were originally unveiled this summer. The ASUS offers up a quad-core processor, LTE and a 10.1-inch IPS display in a thin and light form factor. The somewhat beefy Samsung, on the other hand, has an 11.6 inch HD PLS display, 1.5GHZ processor and 64GB of storage. Not much on specifics on availability at this point, beyond the fact that both will be hitting AT&T’s site and stores “in time for the holidays.”

Microsoft Surface Windows 8 RT tablet hits the FCC?

Microsoft Surface tablet hits the FCC

Well well, it looks like Microsoft’s getting all its Windows 8 ducks in a row today. First, it sends out the invite for the Windows 8 launch event and a save the date for a Windows Phone 8 party, and now it looks like one of its Surface tablets has garnered FCC approval. Dubbed the Model 1516, the device in question can’t be confirmed as a Surface slate, but we do know it’s running Windows RT and has a membrane keyboard peripheral thanks to the docs submitted to Uncle Sam. We also know that it’s got a stand, as the FCC label will be residing on the back panel beneath it, and the radios on board are of the Bluetooth and 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi variety. Does that add up to a Surface RT tablet? We sure think so, but see the evidence for yourself at the source link below.

Microsoft’s been doing its best to get Windows 8 ready for public consumption. After dogfooding the OS to employees and IT pros and getting unsolicited feedback from company co-founder Paul Allen, the time has come for its official unveiling. Microsoft told us to save October 25th on our calendars for a Win8 celebration, and now the invites are out. Naturally, we’ll be there in New York City reporting on the event live, so come on back in three weeks to get your full Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface fix.

Nokia Windows RT tablet in the works [Rumor]

Nokia is pretty tight with Microsoft when it comes to the Windows Phone 8 platform, where the Finnish smartphone manufacturer has just introduced the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 to the masses earlier this morning Stateside. Well, there was no mention of a tablet from Nokia at all, but it seems that a rumor has appeared to make its rounds online, touting that Nokia themselves are already working on a Windows RT tablet. After all, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop never did deny that the company he helms would be rolling out a tablet device, but rather, did stress the fact that Nokia is monitoring the tablet market closely.

It is rumored that the Nokia Windows RT-powered tablet that is currently used by Microsoft to test ARM based Windows Store apps is up and running just fine, not to mention that it has also been sent to other Microsoft partners for app testing purposes. Of course, until we see an actual FCC filing or read an official announcement for a Windows RT tablet from Nokia, we will tread cautiously here.

In all fairness, it might be a bit risky for Nokia to jump into the tablet market? After all, Microsoft has already lined up their Surface tablet that will arrive in due time, and with a host of Android-powered tablets and the sheer number of iPads in the market, it might be relatively tough for Nokia to crack this nut.

Sony: We are still considering Windows RT, but optimum timing is also key

Sony We are still considering Windows RT, but optimum timing is also key

In the Q&A session at today’s Sony VAIO event in Tokyo, a spokesperson expressed that while his company has yet to officially give Windows RT a whirl, it is still under consideration for future VAIO products. The rep added that he believes there’s an optimum timing for picking up this ARM-friendly version of Windows 8, but he didn’t elaborate further. Perhaps Sony’s just getting all too comfortable with Android.

Microsoft unveils Sculpt Comfort Keyboard for Windows 8

Back in July, Microsoft unveiled a number of new keyboards for use with both Windows 8/RT tablets and Windows 8 desktops, but it looks like the company wasn’t quite finished revealing new peripherals. Today Microsoft announced the Sculpt Comfort keyboard, big brother to the Sculpt Mobile keyboard. The two do look quite similar, but there are few key differences between them that are worth pointing out.

For starters, the Sculpt Comfort keyboard is quite a bit bigger than it’s more mobile sibling, but you’ve probably already figured that out. As you can see from the images, the Sculpt Comfort keyboard features an ergonomic design that promotes a neutral positions for your wrists and makes the keys easier to reach. The wrist pad you see there is detachable, so if it ends up getting in the way or it turns out you don’t have enough space with it attached, those problems are easily solved.

One of the more interesting features of the Sculpt is that it sports a split space bar. A Microsoft study shows that “90% of people use only their right thumb to hit the space bar,” which means that more often than not, the left side of the space bar remains untouched. While that won’t exactly be viewed as a problem by most, Microsoft has come up with a use for the left side of the space bar, turning it into a spare backspace key. Using it in that way means that you no longer have to reach for the backspace key when you make a mistake. The space bar is also noticeably larger than the space bars found on other keyboards, making it easier to hit when you’re typing up a storm.

Like some of the other peripherals we’ve seen Microsoft touting lately, this keyboard comes with a set of Windows 8 hotkeys, and boasts wireless USB connectivity to boot. The keyboard runs on two AA batteries, and is compatible with Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 7, and Windows Vista (sorry Windows XP users, you’re out of luck with this one). Microsoft has given the Sculpt Comfort keyboard a price tag of $59.99, with a release date of “soon.” We’ll have more details for you once Microsoft unleashes them, so keep it tuned here to SlashGear!

Intel Windows 8 tablet event on Sept 27 sees HP, Samsung and ZTE on the agenda

Intel has announced a pre-Microsoft Windows 8 tablet event later in September, gathering together a clutch of manufacturers to discuss new hardware and its upcoming Atom chips. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and ZTE are all among the attendees, with ZTE being particularly notable as the only company of the group yet to officially announce Windows 8 intentions.

The most obvious plan for the company, which is so far better known for its phones, might be a Windows RT tablet. That would slot more readily into ZTE’s line-up, alongside its rumored Windows Phone 8 device which was teased earlier this week. However, it would also fail to fit with Intel’s CPU strategy, which will be powering full Windows 8 machines.

As for Intel’s new Atom Clover Trail, that’s part of Intel’s increased focus on mobility computing as it struggles to catch up with ARM-based chipsets. The company unveiled a 2GHz smartphone with Motorola yesterday, the RAZR i, though previous Intel-based handsets have yet to make a significant impact on the market.

We’ll know more on September 27, when Intel gathers together press and manufacturers together in the warm, loving huddle of a new technology showcase. Microsoft itself is expected to officially launch Windows 8 on October 25.
