ZTE teases Windows Phone 8 handset in very blurry photo

A lot of manufacturers are excited to get in on the Windows Phone 8 action, and it seems that ZTE has decided it wants a slice of that pie. The company is teasing a new Windows Phone 8 handset through some rather unconventional means, with ZTE marketing strategy manager Dennis Lui sharing a very blurry image of three different devices on his Sina Wiebo account (as reported by Winp.cn). Have a look at the picture below.

The device on the right is the only one that see clearly (or at least semi-clearly in this case), and it’s easy to see why: it looks an awful lot like a ZTE Tania, and even though it appears to be running Windows Phone 8, in reality it’s probably running the Windows Phone 8 simulator app that’s available on the Marketplace. The other phones are a little harder to place thanks to the liberal use of blurring, but the one on the left could be legitimately running Windows Phone 8, with the one in the middle running some version of Windows Phone 7.

This suggests that not only does ZTE have a Windows Phone 8 device in the works, but that it will also continue to offer Windows Phone 7.x handsets – the device in the image is presumably a Windows Phone 7.8 device – after the launch of WP8. Things get even more interesting though, as Lui also shared an image of a tablet running Windows RT or Windows 8, so it looks like ZTE has a lot in store for the future.

ZTE traditionally makes budget devices, and with many of the big companies eager to show us their snazzy new Windows 8 tablets, laptops, and smartphones, ZTE may be able to squeeze in there and bring Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT to the budget-minded consumer. ZTE obviously sees an opportunity there, and this strange marketing strategy sure has garnered some attention. Stay tuned for more details, as it probably won’t be much longer before ZTE clarifies a few things (pun was definitely intended there).

ZTE marketing guy goes crazy with unknown WP8 handset and Gaussian blur

Who needs a marketing department when you have a personal Sina Weibo account? So reasoned ZTE’s marketing strategy manager, Dennis Lui, as he posted the above photo of three ZTE Windows Phones to the internet. The right-hand device is just a regular ZTE Tania and, although it looks like it’s running Windows Phone 8, the screen is actually a dead ringer for a certain “WP8 simulator” app available for WP7 phones. The remaining two devices are obscured by a generous helping of blur, but the handset on the left could well be running legit WP8, as evidenced by the shrunken live tiles, hinting that ZTE may be among the first wave of manufacturers diving into the new OS. To further whet our budget hardware appetites, Lui also posted a photo of a Windows 8 or Windows RT tablet (shown after the break), which suggests that ZTE is getting into that game too.

ASUS Windows 8 tablet pricing revealed in leaked holiday roadmap

With all of this exciting talk about incoming Windows 8 tablets, it’s easy for a detail or two to get lost in the crowd. Once such detail that has been generally missing from announcements and previews is pricing. We’ve seen what these new tablets can do, but it seems that most manufacturers aren’t ready to talk about pricing just yet.

The prices for three incoming ASUS Windows 8 tablets have been leaked today, as part of the company’s holiday roadmap. As you can see from the image above, which was secured by the folks at ZDNet, the prices are pretty high, with the ASUS Vivo Tab RT coming in at $599. Its big brother, which is running Windows 8 instead of Windows RT, will set you back $799, and if you want the dock for either tablet, you’ll have to shell out an additional $199.

The ASUS Taichi convertible tablet is going to cost you even more, as that has been stuck with a price tag of $1,299. ZDNet says that the roadmap also details a number of other machines that aren’t pictured in the image above, including a laptop that is priced at $549 and the next generation Transformer, which comes in at a whopping $1,399. Keep in mind that these prices may change by the time these machines actually hit shelves, but if these are the prices ASUS has decided on, then it’s going to have some difficulties finding an audience.

That’s especially true when there are other tablets out there available for much less. Why ASUS is pricing these tablets so high when it got the price of the Nexus 7 so right is entirely beyond us (though, to be fair, that may have been more Google’s doing), and we doubt that people are going to be jumping up and down for these products after seeing their prices. Still, as is usually the case, we can’t say for sure until it’s been confirmed, so maybe these products will launch with price tags that are a little easier to swallow. Stay tuned.

Purported ASUS holiday roadmap pegs Windows 8 tablets at $599 and above

Purported ASUS holiday roadmap pegs Windows 8 tablets at $599 and above

Windows 8 tablets have had their specs bandied about for months, but their prices have continued to remain off the radar. Now, however, a purported ASUS holiday roadmap sent to ZDNet may give us a glimpse as to how badly bank accounts could be affected this fall. According to the slide, the ASUS Vivo Tab will carry a $799 price tag and its Windows RT counterpart will come in at $599, which matches the previously reported price difference between slates running Redmond’s latest OS with Intel and AMD processors. The ASUS Taichi dual-screen notebook / tablet hybrid is said to ring up at a heftier $1,299. As for the firm’s Transformer Book, it will supposedly set purchasers back $1,399. If these prices are any indication of what we can expect from other OEMs, Microsoft’s Surface might be pricier than hoped.

Office 2013 arrive on Windows RT tablets this November

Microsoft’s ARM-powered Surface tablet that runs on the Windows RT platform has been confirmed to receive Office 2013 this coming November, which is just a couple of months away, so that means you do not have that long to wait, actually. Just what will Office for Windows RT deliver? Well, we do think that you have pretty much gotten all that you need as a basic computer user with the inclusion of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

These tools will be made available at first via the pre-installed Office Home & Student 2013 RT package, where you ought to take note that these will not be sold as a standalone product. The full-featured version of Office for Windows RT will arrive virtually over on Windows Update from November until January. The reason behind the time window is due to the language version. Are you excited to pick up your Windows RT-powered Surface tablet before the year is over?

Microsoft provides a deeper look into Office 2013 RT

Until now, details have been scarce about the Office 2013 RT. Microsoft did reveal a few details about the software at the IFA event but has now dished out a more elaborated post, mentioning some of its key features. The company has also confirmed that it will roll out a Preview release of Office 2013 RT.

Initially, the RT tablets will arrive with this Preview release. However, eventually the company plans on updating the RT tablets with a final edition of Office 2013 RT through an update.  (more…)

Microsoft details Office for Windows RT shipping on devices as a preview release, upgrade coming later

For all the explaining that Microsoft has done, there’s still a fair bit that’s not clear about what Windows RT will actually look like when it ships next month. The company has filled in one of those gaps today, though, detailing what it hopes will be one of the operating system’s big selling points: Office for Windows RT. Perhaps the biggest news is Microsoft’s confirmation of earlier reports that the productivity suite will actually ship as a preview release on Windows RT devices, with a free upgrade to the final version promised between early November and January depending on the language. What’s more, Microsoft has also confirmed that Office for Windows RT will unsurprisingly be a bit stripped down compared to its standard Windows 8 counterpart — there’s no macros, for starters, and you’ll have to make do without add-ins and some other features like the ability to record narrations in PowerPoint. It’s also only going to be available as a pre-installed component of Windows RT — no standalone release is planned. You can find a full breakdown of the differences at the link below.

Nokia Windows Phone 8 launch: We’re here!

Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 launch is less than an hour away, and SlashGear is in (a very wet) New York City to bring back all the details of the company’s new Lumias. According to the rumors, there’ll be three new Windows Phones on show today, including the new flagship, the 4.5-inch Lumia 920 PureView, which is tipped to be the first device running Microsoft’s OS to bear the photography-centric branding.

That’s already met with some push-back, however, what with other leaks tipped an 8-megapixel camera on the Lumia 920. Considering the only only other PureView device we’ve seen – the 808 PureView – delivers a whopping 41-megapixels and uses some fancy oversampling to create eye-pleasing stills, there were questions around whether Nokia could do something similarly impressive with a much lower resolution sensor.

Don’t worry, though, says Nokia photography chief Damien Dinning, there’s still plenty of PureView magic to be done. The Lumia 920 is expected to be accompanied by the Lumia 820, both of which are tipped to have wireless charging.

Meanwhile, there are the inevitable outliers rumored, including chatter earlier today of a Windows 8/RT tablet that could gatecrash the event and help Nokia expand into a different segment. The company sorely needs to broaden its ecosystem from beyond just phones, especially given the array of Windows models shown off by rivals at IFA last week.

The minutes are counting down, and we’ll have all of the news as it’s announced, so keep it glued to SlashGear!

Nokia Windows 8 tablet tipped to gatecrash Windows Phone event

Nokia is working on Windows tablets in California and could even reveal a new slate model at its New York Windows Phone 8 event today, according to insider whispers. The west coast project is either running Windows 8 or Windows RT, a former Nokia exec told Finnish paper Tekniikka & Talous, while further tipsters suggest that phones may not be the only thing on the agenda for this morning.

Tablets have been a missing piece in Nokia’s mobile strategy for some years now, with the company flirting with the possibility with oversized, non-cellular touchscreen slabs like the Maemo-powered 770, but not releasing a true iPad competitor. Several years back, the company attempted a netbook of its own, the Nokia Booklet, running Windows 7, but its heavy asking price meant sales were underwhelming.

The company’s design chief confirmed a tablet was in the pipeline back in March, saying that he spent roughly a third of his time on the project, and a Windows RT model on a Qualcomm processor has been rumored for some time. Of course, Microsoft now has its own Windows RT/8 tablet range, Surface, announced in June.

Since then, Nokia execs have made quiet comments about tablet intentions, but the firm has been coy to speak out too publicly on its plans for range reinvention. However, the absence of a committed tablet strategy – and the potential such a line-up would have for building a more holistic ecosystem – was cited as a key weakness in an official Nokia risk assessment.

SlashGear will be joining Nokia in NYC in a few hours time, where the company is expected to reveal three new Windows Phone 8 handsets. They’ll likely include wireless charging and a suite of custom Nokia apps and services.
