Qualcomm brings S4 power to Samsung ATIV Tab and S

Just in case you didn’t catch it in the whirlwind of announcements that were laid down today at IFA 2012 by Samsung, Qualcomm has announced that their ultra-powerful Snapdragon S4 processor lineup will be bringing the heat to the ATIV S smartphone and ATIV Tab tablet. The ATIV Tab tablet running Windows RT while the ATIV S is set to be one of the very first Windows Phone 8 devices to hit the market this Fall. The Qualcomm team’s Snapdragon lineup also remains the only set of processor to power Windows Phone, 100% of them, the whole world over.

With the Qualcomm Snapdragon line of processor, it’s assured by the manufacturer that the user is getting “seamless integration and collaboration between hardware, software, and services.” This is of course because Qualcomm manufactures other gear inside the devices they have their processors in as well, and offer software solutions for sharing and media wizardry of all kinds. With Windows RT (the mobile tablet version of Windows 8) on this Samsung tablet and Windows Phone 8 on the ATIV S, you’ll have a full Qualcomm experience in both next-level hardware universes.

Have a peek at our Samsung tag link for more information on everything that’s been revealed today, and stay tuned to our IFA 2012 portal as well to make sure you’ve got information on everything that’s going down all week. We’ll have hands-on with devices of all kinds, Samsung and Qualcomm included, throughout the week!

Samsung Ativ Tab Is a 10.1-Inch, Windows RT Running, Microsoft Surface Challenger [Samsung]

While some PC makers are nervous about building hardware for Windows RT, Samsung’s going for it with the Samsung Ativ Tab. Will it be enough to steer people away from Microsoft Surface? More »

Samsung ATIV Tab 10.1 Windows RT tablet announced

Samsung is extremely busy here in Berlin dropping all sorts of juicy news onto the world. Following the excitement around the Galaxy Note II they’ve now moved onto Windows. The folks from Samsung have just introduced the ATIV Tab 10.1 Windows RT device. It looks very similar to the Galaxy Note 10.1 but runs on Windows.

We are live here in Berlin catching all the details, and will continue to bring you anything and everything Samsung related as the day continues. What you see above appears to be a relatively close cousin to the recently announced [and reviewed] Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet only running atop Windows RT instead.

There are a few important and notable differences though. The Samsung ATIV 10.1 won’t be quite as powerful, and the display isn’t as nice either. They are hopefully aiming for a more budget minded crowd with this one. The Samsung ATIV 10.1 Tab with Windows RT comes complete with a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resolution display, and tosses out Sammy’s quad-core for a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. The camera on the rear has been improved from recent Samsung tablets and will be 5 megapixels on the rear — followed by a 1.9 shooter frontside.

The details are still light and the story is developing as we are watching Samsung unveil all their goodies here live. The ATIV 10.1 will come with HDMI, USB, is super skinny and weighs only 1.2 lbs. Hopefully we’ll hear more about pricing and availability shortly after Windows 8 launches at the tail end of October. Stay tuned to our IFA 2012 Hub for all the latest and greatest news!

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab: a 10.1-inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab a 101inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung’s busy cranking out its fall lineup here in Berlin, and among the new entries is the ATIV Tab, a Windows RT-packing cousin of the Galaxy Note 10.1. The new 10.1-inch slate isn’t quite as aggressive as its Android counterpart and centers on a 1,366 x 768 display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 5MP rear camera paired with a 1.9MP front-facing cam, and ports for micro-HDMI as well as USB. Dimensionally, the tablet is as light and skinny as you’d hope: it weighs 20.1 ounces (570g) and measures a slim 8.9mm thick. The 32GB and 64GB storage options aren’t shockers given the extra space Windows and the bundled copy of Office 2013 Home and Student 2013 will demand, but there’s a treat for long-haul users in the battery — it’s been upgraded from the 7,000maH pack of the Note 10.1 to an ample 8,200mAh unit. Samsung hasn’t handed out launch details, but it’s safe to say that the ATIV Tab won’t arrive any sooner than October 26th.

Epic and NVIDIA announce Unreal Engine 3 for Windows 8 and Windows RT

Epic and NVIDIA announced at IFA today that they’ve teamed up to bring Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT. The announcement was made during the ASUS Vivo Tab RT press conference earlier this morning, and we were given a demo of Unreal Engine 3 running on the device, which comes complete with a Tegra 3 processor. Needless to say, it looks pretty good.

The demo, dubbed “Epic Citadel,” doesn’t show too much – just a fly-through of a medieval-looking town – but the graphics do look awfully nice. Our host says that the demo is running at 35 to 40 frames per second, and also points out that what’s running on the ASUS Vivo Tab RT is the “full PC implementation” of Unreal Engine 3. This means that developers who use Unreal Engine 3 on other platforms will have an easier time porting their games to Windows RT or Windows 8, so it may not be long before some high-profile ports are announced.

Indeed, there are already plenty of great games that are built on Unreal Engine 3 – the Mass Effect series and Rocksteady’s Batman series being just two examples. The possibilities for gaming on Windows RT just got a whole lot more exciting with Unreal support announced, and the visuals that we see in the demo by NVIDIA are pretty impressive for a tablet. Have a look at it below.

There haven’t been any Windows RT games announced with Unreal support yet, but you can bet that they’re coming, as Epic says that Windows RT code is available now for Unreal developers. The Epic Citadel demo is certainly impressive, but we’ll have to wait and see how much support Windows RT garners from current Unreal devs. Stay tuned.

Samsung Ativ Tab and Ativ S details leak, hint at a Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 power duo

Samsung Ativ Tab and Ativ S details leak, hint a Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 power duo

Remember those Ativ Tab and Ativ S trademarks we saw just a couple of days ago? They may well be more than just Samsung’s daydreams. As long as details at The Verge prove true, the devices attached to those names represent a two-pronged revival of Samsung’s Windows-based mobile strategy. We’re most interested in the Ativ S: thanks in part to Windows Phone 8’s multi-core support, it’s effectively a Galaxy S III for the Microsoft crowd with a similar 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front shooter. Swinging attention to the Ativ Tab shows what’s likely to be a commonplace list of features for a Windows RT slate. Outside of the 10.1-inch screen, it’s sporting its own 1.5GHz dual-core chip and 1.9-megapixel front camera as well as a 5-megapixel rear sensor, HDMI video out and USB. We’re still missing a slew of details, such as storage and launch dates, although we might not have to wait long at all to know — if the claims are correct, one or both of the Ativ models may show their faces at Samsung’s IFA 2012 events.

NVIDIA, Epic Games bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT (video)

NVIDIA, Epic Games bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT video

NVIDIA and Epic Games have successfully ported the full PC version of Unreal Engine 3 to both Windows 8 and, more importantly, Windows RT. Demonstrating the achievement on a Tegra 3-powered ASUS Vivo Tab RT, it played a buttery-smooth version of Epic Citadel, suggesting that developers of both PC and Xbox games should have no problem in bringing them over to the new operating system. It also casually mentioned that both Gears of War and Mass Effect were built on the engine, heavily implying that we could see titles of that caliber coming to Microsoft’s low-power OS once it makes it debut on October 26th, but we’ll let you decide for yourself after the break.

Rumor: Samsung Will Announce a New 10-Inch Windows RT Tablet [Samsung]

The Verge is reporting that Samsung could announce a new Windows RT tablet, dubbed the ATIV Tab, as early as today at IFA 2012. In addition to only being 8.9 millimeters thick, the rumored device would have a 10.1-inch screen, 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, and a 5-megapixel rear camera. Additionally, the tablet would include both USB and uHDMI ports. If true, this could be a device to keep an eye on. [The Verge] More »

ASUS Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT bring Windows 8 to Transformer universe

It’s time for the fabulous shape and style of the ASUS Transformer tablet line to work with Microsoft for Windows 8 glory with the ASUS Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT. This set of devices looks rather similar to the ASUS Transformer Prime, but with a bit of an updated set of specifications and Windows 8 or Windows RT under the hood. With the Vivo Tab we’ve got an 11.6-inch IPS display with 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution and an Intel Atom CPU inside. The Vivo Tab RT is just a bit smaller and makes the case with a Tegra 3 quad-core processor for mobile glory.

With the Vivo Tab you’ll be working with a 0.33-inch thickness – that’s without the dock. There’s an 8 megapixel camera on the back of the tablet piece with autofocus and LED flash, and there’s a 2 megapixel camera on the front. Inside you’ve got an Intel Atom CPU paired with 2GB of RAM. There’s also 64GB of storage built-in here and the device is coming stocked with NFC abilities as well. This tablet works with 10-point multitouch on its lovely 11.6-inch display, and it’ll support a Wacom digitizer input as well.

The Vivo Tab RT is of course running Windows RT rather than the Vivo Tab’s Windows 8. The Vivo Tab RT is coming with a 10.1-inch IPS display with 1,366 x 768 resolution. Inside you’ve got the lovely NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor with 12 GPU cores for graphic excellence, and you’ll be working with 2GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. Just like the Vivo Tab, the Vivo Tab RT has NFC capabilities as well.

The docking keyboard you’ll be working with in both units is unique to the unit and will be coming with a full QWERTY set of keys, trackpad, 2 USB ports, and more battery power than you’ll know what to do with. Pricing and availability on both units is not yet known – stay tuned for more ASUS action this week at IFA 2012!

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 17, 2012

Friday has come and gone, which means that the weekend is here once again. The latest iPhone 5 rumors have propelled Apple’s stock to its highest point ever, and it turns out the company’s funds will go toward helping tap a recently-discovered underground river in Crook County, Oregon. Earlier today we saw a picture of what was reported to be the Samsung Galaxy Note II, but later on in the day Daniel YU informed everyone that it was just his mock-up used without his permission. That’s disappointing, but his mock-up looks great, so be sure to check that out.

According to Lenovo, Windows RT tablets could cost $300 less than Windows 8 tablets, and it appears that Yahoo is on the lookout for a new COO. After discovering a glitch with digital signatures earlier in the week, Microsoft is once again publishing Windows Phone apps, and Twitter’s new API update restricts some third-party apps, so watch out for that. UK retailer Clove is reporting that the black Samsung Galaxy S III will be out in October, and a new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 bundle comes packed with bonuses that students are going to find hard to resist.

There’s a particularly nasty Trojan dubbed “Shamoon” that’s making the rounds, and in some rather surprising news from the day, it seems that OnLive is shutting down today. OnLive executives said throughout the day that everything with the company is fine, but later, more evidence that supports such a shutdown surfaced. Not good. Both models of the Nexus 7 are now in stock again on the Google Play store, and third parties were right there to begin pushing all sorts of accessories for it, while we’re hearing rumors that claim Apple’s set-top box will come with cloud DVR and a simple UI.

The beta for Steam’s upcoming Big Picture Mode will be kicking off at the beginning of next month, and HP is getting serious about tackling the consumer tablet division (or at least trying to again). The iPad Mini – and future iPad iterations for that matter – will apparently be getting a special ITO film, and Warren Spector is really pushing for Epic Mickey on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but he needs your help in convincing Disney.

Finally tonight, we have a number of original articles for you to peruse. Don Reisinger asks if there will one day be a universal gaming console, Ben Kersey has SlashGear’s review of The Expendables 2, and Chris Burns has a hands-on with the Motorola PHOTON Q. Enjoy your weekend, folks!
