Nokia adds sight recognition to Here Maps for Windows Phone 8

Six months after promising to integrate sight recognition technology into its Here suite of apps, Nokia has finally updated Here Maps with LiveSight. The update is available today in the Windows Phone app store and requires Windows Phone 8. By tapping a button in HERE Maps, users can enter LiveSight mode, which will scan the surrounding area and pull up relevant information about nearby locations, like addresses, phone numbers and ratings. Lumia owners familiar with Nokia’s City Lens app will recognize the virtual signs attached to buildings viewed through the camera display and the Here Maps version of LiveSight appears to have similar functionality — including Here’s strongest selling point, offline access. If you want to see LiveSight in action, you can watch Nokia’s preview video after the break.

Windows Phone steals third place from BlackBerry in IDC smartphone ranking

Windows Phone steals third place from BlackBerry in IDC smartphone ranking

First and second place in the smartphone OS wars is a foregone conclusion with Android and iOS (respectively) strongly entrenched, but the battle for third place is now full of intrigue. BlackBerry and Microsoft have each stepped up their games with their respective BB10 and WP8 OS’s of late, but so far it’s Redmond prevailing, having jumped two spots from last quarter to take third place, with a 3.2 percent share over BlackBerry’s 2.9 percent. While those two are fighting for third place scraps, Android kicked up its smartphone OS dominance with 75 percent of the global market, which is a huge jump from last year, while iOS fell back slightly to a 17.3 percent share. Between them, those titans owned 92.3 percent of the pie, but it’s arguably Windows Phone that has raised its game the most, with a senior IDC analyst claiming that this latest ranking “validates the direction taken by Microsoft and key partner Nokia.”

Google asks Microsoft to remove YouTube app for WP8, takes issue with lack of ads (update: Microsoft responds)

YouTube only recently came to Windows Phone 8 as a full-fledged app, but its availability may be short-lived. According to documents obtained by The Verge, Google has requested that Microsoft remove the app from it Windows Phone Store — and disable installations on devices — immediately. The reason? Apparently the app didn’t get Goog’s stamp of approval before going live, and it blocks the ads that typically run on YouTube. Naturally, ads are an important source of revenue for both Google and no shortage of third parties, so Mountain View may not be out of line for crying foul. And that’s not the only strike against Redmond: according to the cease and desist letter, YouTube on WP8 lets users download videos, in addition to streaming content that’s been restricted on certain devices. Oh, and all the above-mentioned issues violate YouTube’s Terms of Service. Google is giving MS until May 22nd to remove the app — we’re sure this isn’t the last you’ll hear on this subject.

Update: Microsoft has responded. We have the full statement from a Microsoft spokesperson after the break.

Hipstamatic Oggl app coming to Windows Phone 8, launching with Nokia’s Lumia 925

Hipstamatic Oggl app coming to Windows Phone 8, launching with Nokia's Lumia 925

Hipstamatic’s Oggl app and sharing service is coming to Windows Phone 8, we learned at Nokia’s Lumia 925 launch event. We didn’t get to play around in the app — the WP8 UI we saw on stage was but a preview, as the native app (read: not a port) is still in development. We’re assured Oggl will be ready by the time the new Lumia launches, but it won’t be a Nokia exclusive, so anyone with a WP8 handset will be able to use the food filter and (over)share their lunch choice on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram. We don’t know whether the regular dollar-per-month (or $10 per year) service fee will apply, but we’re told you’ll be able to swap cash for more filters and effects on top of the base selection.

Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon hands-on

Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon handson

The Lumia 928 isn’t the first of Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 handsets to hit Verizon — that distinction goes to the 822 — but for all intents and purposes, it’s the first true flagship Lumia to bear Big Red’s branding. From the jump, you’ll note that Nokia’s bent somewhat to Verizon’s heavy hand, customizing the 928 in a way that shucks the smooth polycarbonate unibody of the 920 for something more hard-edged and angular, yet still plastic. So, what’s so new about this Lumia? Apart from its Xenon flash, nothing at all really. It bears the same 4.5-inch, 1,280 x 768 PureMotion HD+ display (now, OLED), 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor with 1GB RAM, 2,000 mAh battery, integrated wireless charging, NFC and 1.2-megapixel front-facing / 8.7-megapixel rear camera setup as the Lumia 920. Naturally, the 928’s made to run on Verizon’s network, so you’ll find support for LTE / CDMA, but there are also radios for HSPA+ making it “global ready.” We’ll have a review for this deviant Lumia coming shortly, but in the meantime follow along for our first impressions.

Nokia Lumia 925 leaked in low-res press shot

Nokia Lumia 925 leaked in lowres press shot

If you’re looking for details, you might be disappointed. We don’t know much about the alleged Nokia Lumia 925 pictured above, other than its rumored codename: Catwalk. We probably don’t have too much longer to wait for a full spec list, however, with the company hosting a launch event in London tomorrow. The relatively low-resolution press shot posted by @evleaks on Twitter shows a Windows phone with styling typical of the Lumia series. There does seem to be a slight taper toward the face of the device and we can report the headphone jack appears to be on the top edge. And that edge does have a slightly metallic look to it, not unlike the integrated antenna on another high-profile device. Otherwise, we’re as in the dark as you are. But just stay patient — all will be revealed tomorrow.

Nokia reveals another new Lumia smartphone in UK ad, teases ‘more than your eyes can see’ (video)

Nokia reveal new Lumia smartphone in the UK ad, teases 'more than your eyes can see' video

We’re still days away from Nokia’s London media event, but the comapny’s apparently got a real taste for teasers. A new 20-second promo clip aired today in the UK, and although it doesn’t outline any outright specs or model numbers, we we get a (very) up-close look at a dual-flash arrangement (unlike the xenon flash seen on Verizon’s Lumia 928), a glossy white shell and some metal detailing. We’re relieved that Nokia has something new to unveil in the UK next week, but we’re now itching hearing exactly how this Windows Phone will differ from the now-public Lumia 928. We’ll have all the details on Tuesday morning.

Update: The Verge has managed to upload a digital copy of the ad. See it for yourself right after the break.
