How would you change HTC’s Titan II?

Image

Let’s imagine you shunned purchasing a Lumia 900 in favor of HTC’s Titan II, the company’s final Windows Phone handset before its colorful reinvention. You were probably drawn to that 16-megapixel camera, but given the tight restrictions imposed by the operating system, there’s little else to separate it from its kin. The question is, what would you have done differently? How Would You Change asks you to share what you’d wanna see, should the company ever build the Titan III.

Verizon Windows Phone 8X may have passed through the FCC

Verizon Windows Phone 8X may have passed through the FCC

Now, we don’t know for sure what the PM23100 that just made its way through the FCC is, but we’d put pretty good odds on it being Verizon’s Windows Phone 8X. Only a couple of hours after what appears to be the AT&T-bound 8X was given the thumbs up by regulators, yet another HTC Windows Phone appeared, with an incredibly similar model number, CDMA radios and compatibility with Big Red’s 700MHz LTE. Knowing that it’s an HTC Windows Phone and that it packs NFC really doesn’t leave too many possibilities. The one pleasant surprise, it’s also compatible with GSM frequencies 850 and 1900,, so you’ll be able to roam the globe with just the swap of a SIM. Hit up the source to see the filling for yourself.

Likely HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&T-friendly LTE surfaces at the FCC, just in time

HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&Tfriendly LTE surfaces at the FCC just in time

Isn’t that convenient. With only weeks left to go before the official Windows Phone 8 launch event, what’s likely a version of the HTC Windows Phone 8X with North American LTE support has stopped by the FCC for approval. The PM23300 variant we see here (the international 8X is the PM23200) supports both the needed 700MHz LTE band for its eventual appearance at AT&T as well as AWS for wider AT&T coverage and the big three Canadian carriers. All are good signs that HTC is just about ready, although T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers might not want to get overly excited just yet — there’s no AWS 3G, CDMA or Verizon-ready 700MHz LTE to be found on this 8X, which shows that any US launch will still demand multiple editions. The others won’t be far behind in the FCC race with that November release window already locked in.

Nokia Lumia 920 to be a Rogers exclusive in Canada, we wonder if red is an option

Nokia Lumia 920 to be Rogers exclusive in Canada, we wonder if red is an option

Where goeth AT&T, so often goeth its one-time partner Rogers. That’s certainly true for the Nokia Lumia 920: Rogers has confirmed that it will have an exclusive on the Windows Phone 8 flagship in Canada, much as AT&T has a lock on the device in the US. While there’s no pricing or color options yet, the Canuck model will share the November shipping window and LTE support, and it’s easy to imagine Rogers gravitating towards its signature (and coincidentally patriotic) red. Other Canadian carriers haven’t chipped in about the Lumia 820; if history is any indicator, though, we’d anticipate the less expensive portion of Nokia’s lineup going Telus’ way.

Microsoft continues invitation spree, asks us to attend its Windows Phone 8 launch event on October 29th

Microsoft continues the invitation spree, asks us to attend its Windows Phone 8 launch event on October 29th

Can we call October the Month of Metro, even if Microsoft isn’t keen on the idea? Hot on the heels of its Windows 8 invitation, the company is asking us to head out a second time to see a street-inspired OS, inviting us to Windows Phone 8’s formal launch on October 29th in San Francisco. The teaser doesn’t say much about what Microsoft will show, although there’s a real chance we’ll get firmer launch schedules — not to mention more opportunities with the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC Windows Phone 8X than staring lovingly at their home screens. You can be sure that we’ll report back with the full details.

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 land stateside on AT&T’s 4G LTE network this November

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 land stateside as AT&T exclusives

Surprise, surprise — well, not really. Nokia’s Lumia 920 and 820 will be making a splash stateside on AT&T’s lineup with the former as an exclusive. Like most of the carrier’s other announcements as of late, there’s no concrete ship date set for the devices outside of a November bow. As a refresher, the Lumia 920 is the undoubted Windows Phone 8 flagship here, bearing a 4.5-inch Pure Motion HD+ 1,280 x 768 display, 1.5GHz dual-core S4 CPU, 8-megapixel PureView camera with OIS and a 2,000mAH battery. While the line’s mid-ranger, the 820, reps the same chipset as it elder sibling, a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 ClearBlack OLED display and 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera. Both are set to launch with LTE radios in tow, with the 920 available in red, white, black, yellow and cyan and the 820 in a lone black hue. Stay tuned for official word on pricing and release. In the meantime, check out the PR below.

Nokia Xpress brings cloud-based compression to the Lumia line (video)

Nokia Xpress brings cloudbased compression to the Lumia line

Nokia refreshed its web browser for the Asha line with the outing of the 308 and 309 last week and now it’s spreading the love to Lumia. Announced today via the company’s Beta Labs site, Nokia Xpress leverages the cloud to compress internet data up to 85 percent, help users keep tabs on their consumption habits and even reformats favorited sites into a magazine-like layout. The Windows Phone app also enables users to make “smart searches” for content across Bing and YouTube with a simple tap of a selected term, as well as translate the contents of a foreign language page easily from the settings menu. Unfortunately, the app isn’t yet available on the Marketplace, so for the time being, you’ll have to download it direct from the source below.

Nokia’s Lumia 510 might have been spotted catching the noonday sun

Image

If a rolling stone gathers no moss, then the rumors surrounding Nokia’s ultra-low-budget Lumia 510 have grown very mossy indeed. The folks over at GSMArena have snagged this glare-a-riffic snap of the prospective handset catching some rays in the finest of blurrycam traditions. Their tipster is also reiterating the specs we’ve seen before, talking up a Windows 7.8 handset with 256MB RAM, 800MHz CPU and 5-megapixel camera that’s destined to stand between the Asha and Lumia 610 at the lower end of its smartphone pantheon. For those who prefer blurry pictures that move, My Nokia Blog has turned up a brief hands-on video of the phone — check it out after the break.

Microsoft reportedly set to launch Xbox Music on October 26th, ad-supported option on tap

We’ve known that it was coming for some time now, and today we have a report of an actual launch date for Microsoft’s Xbox Music service. According to The Verge’s sources, the rollout will coincide with the launch of Windows 8 on October 26th. What’s more, the site is also reporting that the service will include a free, ad-supported option in addition to paid subscriptions — rates for the latter leaked out last month. As expected, the service will be available on Windows Phone, Windows 8 and the Xbox 360 at launch, with iOS and Android apps said to be coming at a later date.

ComScore: iPhone grew to 34 percent US share in a pre-iPhone 5 world, Android still on top at 52 percent

ComScore iPhone moved up to 34 percent US share in a preiPhone 5 world, Android remained on top at 52 percent

Apple is all too used to the rumor cycle affecting its sales: the company just saw a dip in sequential iPhone shipments this spring as customers waited for what would ultimately become the iPhone 5. If you believe ComScore’s US smartphone market share estimates, though, Apple wasn’t the worse for wear this August. While the iPhone was in the doldrums this spring, it jumped almost a whole point versus an already positive July to hit 34.3 percent; we’re wondering if last-minute discounts played a part in keeping iPhone 4S sales healthy. Google didn’t have much to fear and saw Android climb to 52.6 percent, even if its ascent wasn’t as rapid as that of its Bay Area neighbor. RIM took the brunt of the losses and dipped to just 8.3 percent of the market in what’s increasingly a two-horse race, although Microsoft’s Windows Phone held its ground at 3.6 percent.

The wider US cellphone market tells a familiar story, with Samsung on top. There’s signs that the narrative is very close to changing, however: LG and Apple are now close enough, at one point’s difference, that Apple could seize second place by the time we see ComScore’s figures for September. Before interpreting Apple’s performance as some sign of a wider reversal of fortune, just remember that most of its challenges are on the world stage. There’s no guarantee that the Android-focused markets beyond American borders have been as receptive to iPhone price drops and updates.
