If you just bought a Windows Phone 8 device like the Nokia Lumia 920 or the HTC 8x and were hoping to load it with Xbox content for the holidays — after all, they’re both from Microsoft, right? — it seems that you may be in for some disappointment. As of right now, purchases or rentals from the newly-branded Xbox Video will not sync to Windows Phone 8. Microsoft has even officially acknowledged the issue in its support page, stating: “Windows Phone 8 does not currently support playback of rented or purchased content from the Xbox Video Store.” The article goes on to say that you can go to the Windows Phone Feature Suggestions page to recommend it for future releases. Gee, thanks, Microsoft; that’s so helpful. Now we’ll actually have to talk to our families. The horror.

Brits looking to score Samsung’s ATIV S flagship on Vodafone can start forming an orderly queue. UK reseller Phones4U is offering pre-orders for the Windows Phone 8 darling to those willing to sign a two-year contract, giving it away for free on a £33 ($52) plan with 600 minutes, unlimited text, 500MB of cellular data and 2GB on WiFi. Pay a pound more per month ($54) as well as £30 for the device ($48) and the subscription jumps to both unlimited minutes as well as 2GB of cellular use. Unfortunately, the wait for this biggest-screened Windows Phone may be a long one — while Samsung has only confirmed a December launch for the ATIV S in the UK, Phones4U has the smartphone reaching customers on December 21st. If that’s accurate, we’d make sure there’s some leftover wrapping paper in case the ATIV S becomes a gift, even if it’s to yourself.

You’ve seen it twice before and you’re bound to see it two more times yet. It’s the Windows Phone 8X by HTC, Microsoft’s signature ambassador to all things mobile and Live-Tiled, and it’s now available on T-Mobile. As the carrier’s sole WP8 flagship, it arrives with a bit of a stiff leg — there’s none of the flexibility exercised by AT&T’s variant, as it comes in just one color (California Blue) and one 16GB storage configuration. At $199 on a two-year contract, the 8X is a pricier buy for T-Mobile’s value-minded customers (especially with the $150 Lumia 810 also available). So although we’ve already passed judgment on both of its GSM twins, we’re here to tell you how Magenta’s version breaks from the pack.

After a long wait, the next crop of Windows Phone handsets are beginning to trickle in, and just in time for the holidays. If you’re familiar with our reviews of the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920, you already know that Windows Phone has some impressive contenders in its stable, but these flagship devices only tell half of the story. Now, we’re given an opportunity to test the Lumia 810, a mid-range smartphone that’s now available on T-Mobile.

It’s clear that T-Mobile isn’t looking to start a price war here. At $150 after a rebate, the Lumia 810 costs more than Nokia’s crown jewel, the Lumia 920, which you can find on AT&T for $100. Another telling sign: the phone also costs more than its siblings, the Lumia 820 for AT&T ($50) and the Lumia 822 for Verizon ($100). Naturally, you’ll be able to recoup some of this with T-Mobile’s lower monthly fees, but it goes without saying that T-Mobile is levying an early adopter tax on its subscribers. That said, for those sold on Windows Phone yet unwilling to jump ship, you’re left to choose between the Lumia 810 and the more expensive HTC 8X. Along with its lower cost, Nokia holds an ace up its sleeve in the form of its home-brewed Windows Phone apps, which may be enough to sway customers away from HTC’s flagship. Sprint was notably absent from the list of carriers adding Windows Phone 8 devices to their line-ups, but it seems the mobile network is not being left out altogether. PCMag has received a statement from Sprint which claims that it’s allying with Microsoft to make WP8 handsets available “next year.” Despite rumors an LTE model was destined for the carrier, nothing materialized, and the WP7-loaded HTC Arrive even disappeared from its ranks. It looks like these weren’t signs the relationship had gone sour, and now at least, customers can be assured they won’t need to switch providers to get their hands around a WP8 device. However, “next year” is a pretty big window, so we’d be hesitant to assume something’s coming mere weeks into 2013. Waiting a while might not be so bad, though — it could even mean an exclusive handset or two might find its way to steadfast patrons.
