Wireless power breakthrough uses adaptive resonance to support multiple wireless platforms

I have said on more than a few occasions that one of the most interesting things smartphone companies can do, in my opinion, is offer wireless charging. We all know the hassle of fiddling with wires and trying to get a charger connected, especially in the dark, to charge or smartphones and other devices. Wireless charging with Qi and other wireless power methods is very important to many of us.

Fulton Innovation has announced a new breakthrough in wireless power that uses adaptive resonance technology and is capable of simultaneously charging multiple devices that use different power formats. The technology is called Adaptive Resonance and combines benefits of inductive coupling, magnetic resonance, and Qi technology into one solution. This means no matter which of those three formats your device uses for wireless charging, Adaptive Resonance technology will allow you to charge it with the same system.

This technology addresses one of the key areas of concern for many people who are looking forward to widespread use of wireless power. With multiple formats on the market, the chance of cross compatibility between brands was looking slim. The Adaptive Residence technology allows a single charging base plate to charge multiple devices, even if those devices use different wireless power formats at the same time.

The Adaptive Residence technology also allows the user to move devices around on the charging plate to make room for another device while maintaining very high charging efficiency. The technology also supports both closely and loosely coupled wireless charging systems. With Adaptive Residence technology supporting three of the biggest wireless power formats out there, it suddenly doesn’t matter as much what format the device manufacturer chooses to support.

JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker

JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker

The JBL PowerUp is not an ordinary Bluetooth speaker because it is designed specifically for the new Nokia Lumia 920/820. The wireless speaker has a Qi wireless charging point so that you can just leave your brand new Windows Phone on top for an extra juice. The JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker is available in a variety of colors to match Nokia’s Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 cases. The JBL PowerUp supports both Bluetooth and NFC. Unfortunately, there is no info on pricing at this moment. [Nokia]

Nokia gets Windows Phone 8 fever: Lumia 920 and 820 wrap-up

We’ve been at Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 event all morning, and the event has given us plenty to talk about. Most important is the reveal of the Nokia Lumia 920, which many figured was going to be officially announced at this event. The Lumia 920 is here at last, and it’s definitely worthy of being called Nokia’s new flagship device. Naturally, we managed to get some hands-on time with it, and we were pretty pleased with what we saw.

That wasn’t the only major announcement from today’s Nokia event, however, as the company also announced the Lumia 820. The Lumia 820 is a Windows Phone 8 handset for the budget-minded consumer, but aside from a few downgrades in some places, the Lumia 820 comes packed with the same hardware that the 920 does. Those interested in the Lumia 820 should be sure to check out our hands-on with the device to get a better feel for how it is.

With the release of the Lumia 920, Nokia is rebooting PureView, and showed off some pretty impressive results. We don’t have a solid release date for either handset yet, but both will be arriving in a variety of colors before the year ends – that’s with LTE and HSPA+ functionality too. The Nokia Lumia 920 will also be packing a glove-friendly touch screen when it arrives, and Nokia also announced a range of accessories for the device as well.

Some of those accessories include the JBL Power Up speakers and the Fatboy charging pillow – which allows for wireless charging of your handset. We went hands-on with some of those accessories, so have a look at it to see if they might be some extras you’d be interested in buying. The Lumia line will be getting AOL’s entertainment hub through AT&T, and the company also announced today that over 7 million Lumias have been sold to date. Will the Lumia 920 and 820 boost that number? You can bet that Nokia is hoping so, and from what we saw, the company just might have a pair of winners on its hands. Stay tuned.

Nokia Lumia accessories and wireless charging hands-on

Nokia’s new Lumia 920 may have stolen the show this morning while they announced a few new handsets, but the accessories Nokia brought to the market along with their new phones deserve a quick look too. We have wireless charging in multiple ways, NFC speaker docks from JBL and more so check them out below along with some hands-on and first impressions.

First we’ll start with the just announced JBL Power Up wireless speaker. This new speaker doesn’t have a dock, well, because it doesn’t need one. This is as wireless as it gets featuring both NFC capabilities for wireless media playback, and wireless charging with compatible Lumia devices too. JBL partnered with Lumia and the Qi wireless technology to produce a neat accessory here. Just tap the phone and speaker together for some NFC goodness to start streaming your favorite song, or lay your Lumia right on top and charge it at the same time. This is quite the cord-cutting accessory.

Then since we are talking about cord cutting they also detailed multiple other wireless charging systems too. Nokia also announced their own Lumia Wireless charging pads using the same Qi charging we’ve seen from others like HP and Palm. This still hasn’t taken off like many had hoped, but Nokia seems to be putting forth tons of effort in the technology. We have hands-on video showing off their charging system that will be available shortly.

When we said Nokia is going all in on wireless charging we meant it. They partnered with JBL above, and even with Fatboy to announce a wireless charging “pillow”. Yea this is actually a soft microfiber pillow with the Qi charging standard built-in. This will be a nice and comfy place to set your lovely Yellow or Cyan Lumia 920, and they’ve partnered with Virgin Atlantic, Coffee Bean, and Tea Leaf to get these pillows in lounges nationwide. Yes they want you to be able to charge your Lumia while hanging out at the coffee shop — again all wirelessly.

Then while it isn’t an accessory in the usual standards the Lumia 820 also announced today will support a wide array of colors and battery covers. This will add the wireless charging options to that budget smartphone to join the 920, and they’ll be offering multiple colors such as black, yellow, cyan, purple and more. Then lastly just like leaks all last week Nokia has partnered with Monster to offer the same bright colors in multiple NFC capable wireless headphones as you can see below.

The Nokia event has just wrapped up earlier today and we’ll continue to bring you more details and hands-on video as the day continues.

TDK Wireless Charging Speaker: A Neat Way To Charge Your Phone While Playing Music

Playing music on your phone can be very battery-consuming. And it is quite annoying to have to plug the phone for a recharge right in the middle of a jukebox delight. Moreover, if you want to take the sound a notch higher, conventional speakers would require you to plug in the device, resulting in more cables and additional hassle.

TDK has now come up with a rather smart alternative. The new TDK Wireless Charging Speaker allows you to play music on the speakers while charging your phone at the same time. The wireless charging pad is fitted neatly on top of it. (more…)

Nokia adds Qi wireless charging tech to new Lumia phones, we go hands-on

Nokia adds Qi wireless charging tech to new Lumia phones, we go handson

So the big buzz of the day’s just passed, but now’s the time to focus on the lesser details of Nokia’s big Windows Phone 8 / Lumia presser: the accessories. Revealed during the presentation today, the Lumia 920 and 820 both incorporate Qi tech for wireless charging (albeit, optionally in the latter’s case), a perk that will let users choose from the company’s own stylish, soap-bar like dock, Fatboy pillow or an NFC-equipped charging stand. All three function exactly as advertised — put the phone on top and it starts charging right away. The basic dock is the same sort of plastic that now graces the outside of the Lumia line. It’s simple, slightly shiny and comes in a variety of hues. The Pillow is broad, flat and not exactly comfortable. The charging element sits right in the middle and is surrounded by beanbag-like cushions on all sides save for the top — we wouldn’t advise putting it under your head to go to sleep.

The most interesting peripheral is definitely the charging stand. It’s the least cumbersome of the charging options and it’s got a neat trick up its sleeve. An NFC chip embedded in its base can be used to tell a Lumia to launch an app when you place it in the dock. So, you could easily put a 920 down, keep it charged and automatically open your music player or alarm clock. You can see the NFC trick in action in a video after the break.

JBL Power Up wireless speaker hooks up with Lumia 920

Nokia has revealed a new speaker dock for the Lumia 920, the JBL Power Up wireless speaker, which can pair and stream with the Windows Phone 8 handset without wires. Unveiled alongside the Lumia 920 in NYC this morning, the JBL dock uses a combination of Bluetooth and NFC to pair and stream music, but can also recharge your phone while it’s playing.

On the top of the lozenge-shaped speaker there’s a wireless charging pad and radio set: hold the Lumia 920 close to the platform, and it automatically pairs and re-routes the audio through to the JBL. As we’ve seen in other Nokia speakers before, that happens on-the-fly even if you’re in the middle of playing a song.

Because of the 920 has wireless charging support too, and that’s built into the JBL, you can stream music without running down your battery.

There’s also Monster’s new Purity Pro headphones, announced earlier in the week, which also include NFC for pairing and Bluetooth for audio streaming.

JBL Power up hands-on

JBL just kicked out a pair of new accessories to go with that new Nokia Lumia 920. The Power Up speaker does more than just start Bluetooth music sharing over NFC — it has a Qi wireless charging point so that you can just leave your shiny new Windows Phone on top for an extra jolt of energy without looking for that FatBoy pillow. We’ll provide more details as they emerge following Nokia’s special event.

Nokia brings wireless charging to Virgin Atlantic lounges, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Nokia brings wireless charging to Virgin Atlantic lounges, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Nokia thinks you’ll like the wireless phone charging on your Lumia 920 or 820 enough to want to take it on the road, and to that end it’s striking a deal to bring the cable-free experience beyond the home. Both Virgin Atlantic’s lounge at Heathrow Airport and countertops at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the US will let you top up your Windows Phone without having to hunt for a power outlet. We’re still waiting on details like the timing, but we’re glad to know that we won’t have to lug around our FatBoy Recharge Pillows just to keep living in Nokia’s vision of the future.

Nokia Fatboy charging pillow revealed for wireless Lumia 920 juicing

Nokia has partnered with Fatboy on a wireless charging “pillow” for the new Lumia 920, a compact docking platform to rejuice your Windows Phone 8 handset. Meanwhile, Nokia has also partnered with Virgin Atlantic, Coffee Bean, and Tea Leaf, which will see the “pillow” included in Virgin lounges and embedded into tables at the drinks chains.

Nokia has jumped in with the Qi platform for its charging system, which will mean the company’s system will be compatible with other Qi-based systems from other manufacturers. They’re still relatively rare, however, so Nokia is obviously hoping that it can kickstart the wireless charging industry as a whole.

Nokia is yet to confirm whether the Fatboy “recharge pillow” will be bundled with the Lumia 920, or sold as a separate accessory. There’s also a Nokia own-brand model, the Wireless Charging Plate DT-900.
