LG’s NYC press event aims to ‘share the genius’ of the Optimus G Pro

LG

LG’s just shed some much-needed light on its May 1st New York event. Turns out the “genius” the company will be celebrating stands for Atlas Genius — as in the band — and the star of this fete: the Optimus G Pro. We’ve already seen and very favorably reviewed the global model of LG’s performance flagship (for the G’s successor, you’ll have to wait until Q3) and now it looks like the US is in store for a potential carrier-branded version of its own. If it arrives internally unmolested, we’re looking at a 5.5-inch 1080p True HD IPS+ display, Snapdragon 600 and a 2.1-megapixel / 13-megapixel camera setup capable of dual video recording. We’ll be on-site for this stateside debut, so stay tuned for the full monty.

Apotop DW09 Wireless SD Card/USB Reader Adds the iPhone Ports You Always Wanted

I have a feeling I’m not the only one who’s ever needed to move information to or from the iPhone and felt like Apple played some sort of cruel joke on us. Without a memory card slot or some sort of data transfer application, you can’t just move files back and forth easily. This is one of the big benefits of most Android phones in that they have a built-in memory card slot so you can just copy files to and from that card as you need to.

dw091

A company called Apotop has unveiled a new accessory aimed specifically at iPhone users that should make it very easy to move your data around. The product is called the DW-09 Wi-Reader and it has a built-in USB port and SD memory card slot. The device is designed to allow you to plug in an SD, SDHC or SDXC memory card or a flash drive. When using the companion application that runs on your iPhone or iPad, you can transfer data to and from that memory card wirelessly.

Powered by an internal rechargeable battery, the device can also be used with external USB hard drives as long as the drives are externally powered. Another cool thing about the Wi-Reader is that it supports content streaming for up to three users at the same time, and you can also use the DW09 as a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect wireless networks when traveling.

Pricing and availability for the Apotop DW09 have yet to be announced.

Geeksphone Keon takes Firefox OS to the FCC

Geeksphone Keon takes Firefox OS to the FCC

Spanish e-tailer Geeksphone already made it known that its Firefox OS handsets would be available (as developer previews) starting early next. So, it comes as no surprise to find the Keon, the lower-end of its two white-labeled devices, has just passed through the FCC’s labs. From a fully fleshed user manual to product shots and RF reports, most everything about the 3.5-inch bright orange-backed handset is available for public consumption. Bearing model number C8666GP, the meager Keon reps an HVGA display, 1,580mAh Li-ion battery, 1GHz single-core Snapdragon S17225A processor and support for GPRS/GSM/WCDMA 850MHz and 1900Mhz bands, making this global handset usable in the states on AT&T should you opt for an import. It’s expected to cost around €91 (about $120 USD) when it lands, so if you care to take a low-cost crack at Gary Kovacs’ newly minted OS, you know where to look.

Verizon says its Galaxy S 4 is coming sometime in May

Verizon says its Galaxy S 4 is coming sometime in May

If you noticed that Verizon was silent while other US carriers provided their launch schedules for the Galaxy S 4, you’re not alone — it was the only real holdout among the big four networks. As it turns out, the company was just continuing a small tradition of being fashionably late with influential phones. Big Red now says its version of the Samsung flagship will appear sometime in May, skipping past the first wave of GS 4 releases later in April. An exact date? Pricing? Capacities? Those are coming at an unspecified point “soon,” although that may not be soon enough for subscribers who have to own the latest and greatest.

US Cellular announces its intent to carry Windows Phone 8 devices

US Cellular announces its intent to carry Windows Phone 8 devices

In response to a customer’s question about Windows Phone plans, US Cellular used its official Facebook page to proclaim its intent to launch a WP8 device in the near future. While the representative specifically mentioned Windows 8 (sans “Phone”), we reached out to US Cellular for clarification. A company spokesperson confirmed our suspicions, stating that a device running the mobile platform will indeed be launching. We’ll have to wait until next month to get additional details about it, but USCC customers biding their time for a WP8 smartphone will soon have the opportunity to grab one for themselves without making the move to a different carrier.
