Wireless charging stations aren’t currently very bright, but they’re about to learn some new tricks. The Alliance for Wireless Power and the Bluetooth SIG are collaborating on an updated A4WP specification that uses Bluetooth Smart to manage wireless charging sessions. Future Bluetooth-equipped stations should optimize power delivery, prioritize charging for multiple devices and launch apps; you could order a meal by setting your phone down at a restaurant table, for instance. Just when we’ll see these smart stations isn’t certain, though. When the first A4WP-ready products aren’t likely to reach the market until next year, it could be a long time before wireless chargers become truly multi-talented.

Toshiba bakes TransferJet file transfer and wireless charging into touchscreen kiosk, charges phones and credit cards

Toshiba bakes TransferJet file transfer and wireless charging into touchscreen kiosk, charges phones and credit cards

In an effort to make Toshiba’s TransferJet more… business, the company revealed a touchscreen kiosk that allows you to buy (and immediately download) music, videos and more. Just in case that alone wasn’t enough, the kiosk, which is adorably petite, also uses NFC to pair the device and (if you have the appropriate account or software) pay for downloadable content. The kiosk even throws in Qi wireless charging for your handset as you select, buy and download that new anime episode. Of course, if you don’t have wireless charging (or TransferJet to grab the downloads in the first place), you might not get the most out of what Toshiba’s offering here, but the idea is to place the device in places like airports and convenience stores, where people are likely to have time to kill and want something to watch or listen to right away.

Qualcomm joins Wireless Power Consortium board, sparks hope for A4WP and Qi unification

Qualcomm joins Wireless Power Consortium board, sparks hope to unify A4WP and Qi

Qualcomm, the founding member of Alliance for Wireless Power (or A4WP in short), made a surprise move today by joining the management board of the rival Wireless Power Consortium (or WPC), the group behind the already commercially available Qi standard. This is quite an interesting development considering how both alliances have been openly critical of each other, and yet now there’s a chance of seeing just one standard getting the best of both worlds. That is, of course, dependent on Qualcomm’s real intentions behind joining the WPC.

Qualcomm’s Halo wireless charging tech headed to Formula E, safety cars get first dibs

DNP Qualcomm's Halo wireless charging tech headed to Formula E safety cars

Ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show this week, Qualcomm has come out to announce that it’ll be bringing its Halo wireless charging technology to the first-ever Formula E electric vehicle race next year. But before y’all get too excited, only the safety cars will be equipped with Halo for the first season, which goes from September 2014 to June 2015 in London, Rome, Berlin, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles and many more places.

As with these safety cars plus trial vehicles from London taxi firm Addison Lee, the current-gen Halo requires electric vehicles to stay still on large charging pads, which isn’t ideal for racing cars. That said, Qualcomm CMO Anand Chandrasekher told us that his folks are already looking into bringing dynamic charging to racing cars starting in the second season. In other words, these battery-powered vehicles will eventually be able to recharge while still running on the race track!

Alcatel unveils 6-inch One Touch Hero smartphone with E Ink and LED cover options

Alcatel unveils 6inch One Touch Hero with optional E Ink and LED covers

Alcatel’s pen-toting One Touch Scribe HD now has a larger counterpart: meet the One Touch Hero. The new Android 4.2 smartphone upgrades to a 6-inch 1080p LCD, and gets a raft of optional cover accessories that augment the giant display. An E Ink cover lets owners read books without using the power-hungry main screen; there’s also a wireless charging cover and a MagicFlip cover with LED notifications. Even without those extras, the Hero is overall more powerful than its Scribe HD ancestor. It carries a faster 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, a sharper 13-megapixel rear camera, an improved 2-megapixel front shooter and either 8GB or 16GB of expandable storage. Should you be intrigued, the One Touch Hero will be available in October for a “high-end” price. Alcatel will also sell a Bluetooth phone accessory (much like the HTC Mini+), a TV Link video adapter and a pico projector that doubles as a stand. %Gallery-slideshow77141%

Bloomberg: General Motors to add wireless chargers on some 2014 car models

Smartphone wireless chargers are easier to find than ever, but built-in inductive systems for cars? Those we don’t see often. According to Bloomberg, General Motors will incorporate wireless charging systems for phones on some of its 2014 car models, joining the ranks of Toyota and Chrysler. Unlike the chargers aboard the 2013 Avalon and the Dodge Dart, however, GM’s cars will (officially) be the first ones to use Powermat. When the carmaker first announced a $5 million stake in Powermat in 2011, it said the Volt will be the first to offer the wireless charging perk. A two-year delay might have changed GM’s plans — it originally wanted to launch an in-car system in 2012 — but we won’t know for sure until the company releases official details.

Verizon claims its LG G2 variant comes with exclusive wireless charging

Verizon claims its LG G2 variant comes with exclusive wireless charging

LG launched the G2 without any mention of wireless charging, but Verizon seems to have scooped that feature for its own variant of the handset. On its sign-up sheet, Big Red is claiming that the CDMA version will come with “exclusive wireless charging,” and the accompanying image also shows a slightly different design to the rear buttons. Exactly the sort of thing rival carrier CEOs like to squabble over.

BlackBerry Z30 listed as supporting Qi wireless charging

BlackBerry Z30 supports Qi wireless charging according to Wireless Power Consortium

Just before a smartphone turns up at the debutante ball, the internet comes alive with frenzied claims about what the new hardware will offer. While most of ’em turn out to be wishful thinking on behalf of whoever entered the data, we imagine that standards are a little stricter over at the Wireless Power Consortium. It’s there that a listing has popped up claiming that BlackBerry’s as-yet unannounced Z30 will support Qi wireless charging. The listing goes on to say that the smartphone will pack a medium power receiver, capable of pulling 120 watts from a charger, which should be enough to juice that (rumored) 2,800mAh battery in short order.

Starbucks and Powermat bring wireless charging to select Silicon Valley shops

Starbucks and Powermat bring wireless charging to select Silicon Valley coffee shops

Following a successful trial rollout at 17 stores in Boston, Starbucks has decided to join up with Powermat to bring the company’s wireless charging tech to Silicon Valley. The first installation will be completed this Sunday, at a store in San Jose, with up to 10 area locations set to be online before the end of August. Powermat President Daniel Schreiber explained that Silicon Valley was selected in order to boost the technology’s exposure among key industry players — AT&T has already confirmed that several of its smartphones will be compatible with the PMA standard in 2014, but the alliance needs event more support in order to grow momentum. The next logical step for this partnership would be for Powermat to sell coffee-resistant charging cases in Starbucks stores, of course, though neither company has made any announcements to that effect.

Intel joins Alliance for Wireless Power’s Board of Directors

DNP Intel joins Alliance for Wireless Power

The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP), a consortium working to establish a new wireless charging standard, hasn’t been around for terribly long — Samsung and Qualcomm joined forces to create the organization just over a year ago — but it’s planning to make waves as quickly as possible. One of the most effective ways to do exactly that, then, would be to persuade large players in the mobile industry to join along, and Intel certainly meets that qualification. The company announced this afternoon that it has officially joined the A4WP’s Board of Directors. This move doesn’t guarantee that we’ll be soon seeing Intel-powered devices with built-in wireless charging capabilities, but it’s at least a solid indication that the folks in Santa Clara are mindful of (and intrigued by) the potential that near-field magnetic resonance tech holds.
