These Disgusting Red Worms Have Been Found in Tap Water

Never drink water again. Or never drink water for as long as humanly possible. Or fine, drink water but make sure you watch out for these disgusting little red worms that have somehow dug their way through inside a water filtering system in Oklahoma. Those red worms—ranging from half an inch to an inch long—were found in the tap water of a small town. Yikes.

What Death Looks Like: A Fast-Spreading Glowing Blue Wave

Dead is dead, some famous TV show about vacationing on an island once said. But how does dead, well, look? How do billions of cells shut off at once? An international team of researchers found that it comes in a wave. Death spreads through a special necrosis pathway that leaves dead cells as it passes through. A blue tornado of death.

14 Infamous Computer Virus Snippets That Trace a History of Havoc

Computer viruses are almost as old as personal computers themselves, and their evolution was only hastened by the birth of Internet. And within each code is a story about its author, about the time it was written, and about the state of computing when it terrorized our hard drives.

Worms To Arrive On The PS Vita Later This Year

Worms To Arrive On The PS Vita Later This YearIf you grew up playing games like Worms on your computer, then chances are you might have be pleased when it arrived on mobile devices. However if playing on your phone isn’t your thing, Managing Director at Team17, Debbie Bestwick, has announced that Worms will be arriving on the PS Vita later this year, although there is no word on when exactly that will happen. According to Bestwick, “One big Worms game we can mention is a game for the PS Vita that we are working closely with Sony on, this will be the ultimate handheld console version releasing later this year.” Based on that statement, we can only assume that Worms for the PS Vita will take advantage of the touchscreen controls as well as the touchpads positioned behind the console, or at least that’s what we’re hoping. In any case hopefully additional details will be shared, but in the meantime who’s excited?

    Worms Revolution trailer released

If you had played the classic game “Worms” on your PC before, you would certainly know how much fun it is to spend hour after hour trying to rid your opponent’s team of worms through various nefarious means, and most of the time, the one who knows how to best make use of weapons as well as the battlefield’s landscape to their advantage would emerge as the victor. The same applies too, to this Worms Revolution trailer which showed off plenty of weapons as well as their effectiveness, including an exploding old lady to the ability to unlock troughs of water so that it washes your opponents away. Expect to see Worms Revolution arrive this coming October on platforms such as the PC, Xbox LIVE and Sony’s PSN. Enjoy the trailer above, courtesy of the folks over at Joystiq.

I do think that the inclusion of slightly better graphics (you get stuff like anti-aliasing now alongside background creatures like seagulls and a crab who is constantly playing with its own pincers) does add to the overall feel of the game, but playing this is just like taking a walk down memory lane – with superior eye candy, that’s all. There is no quantum leap in the series’ gameplay.

Indestructible Robot Inchworm Crawls Using Creepy Artificial Muscles [Video]

Instead of focusing their immense talents on designing adorable robot puppies, or cuddly cyborg kittens, researchers at MIT have created an artificial earthworm that contracts and expands its body using nickel-titanium muscles that allow it to unsettlingly crawl its way along. More »

Researchers create Meshworm robot, beat it up (video)

We’ve seen a number of options for controlling real worms, but never a worm robot, until now. Enter Meshworm, the latest creation from researchers at MIT, Harvard University and Seoul National University. The bot is made from “artificial muscle” composed of a flexible mesh tube segmented by loops of nickel / titanium wire. The wire contracts and squeezes the tube when heated by a flowing current, but cut the power and it returns to its original shape, creating propulsion in a similar way to its living kin. Taking traditional moving parts out of the equation also makes it pretty hardy, as proven by extensive testing (read: hitting it with a hammer). DARPA is known for getting its fingers in all sorts of strange pies, and it also supported this project. We can’t see it being the fastest way of gathering intel, but the potential medical applications, such as next-gen endoscopes, sound plausible enough. Full impact tests in the video after the break.
