Crazy Message Left On Broken Wing By Alaska Airlines’ Maintenance Crew [Wtf]

It may look like a joke played on passengers, but it’s not: an Alaska Airlines’ maintenance crew servicing a Boeing 737 cut out part of its wing and then wrote “We Know About This” next to it. Then, they sent the jetliner on a flight. More »

Style Is Dead: Nokia Released a Hot Pink Nail Polish to Commemorate the Release of Its New Pink Lumia [Wtf]

I got a neon pink pedicure earlier this afternoon and now I’m kinda regretting it, because Nokia seems to have co-opted the color pink, as well as the medium of nail polish, with this ridiculous Nokia Lumia-branded hot pink nail lacquer. Ugh. More »

This DIY Lego Wheelchair Can Carry (Small) Passengers

2012-07-29-21.16.10-1024x764

Burf aka Simon Burfield is an iOS programmer and Lego experimenter who tries to take building blocks to the next level. Interestingly, if this wild rideable Lego wheelchair is any indication, he’s left the next level and is now firmly in the distant future.

Made with 12 Lego NXT motors and 12 multi-directional wheels, this carefully designed prototype can carry around a 198 pound person and is controlled via a small joystick. It can move in multiple directions and even roll side to side to “strafe” through a room.

Obviously this is a one-off DIY project, but it’s amazing how far a little ingenuity, a whole lot of Lego, and an underdeveloped sense of the dangers associated with sitting on a bunch of little plastic blocks can get you.

Real Life Japanese Mech Robot Fires BBs With A Smile

Screen shot 2012-07-30 at 9.40.56 AM

The Kuratas Mecha robot is an art/aspirational nerd project by Suidobashi Heavy Industry. This full-sized Mech robot features a ride-in cockpit, “rocket” launchers, and a “smile controlled” BB Gatling gun. That’s right: when you smile, this thing unleashes thousands of tiny plastic BBs.

Unveiled at Wonder Fest 2012 in Tokyo, you can control the robot with either a set of master-slave joysticks or using a more fluid Kinect interface. It runs something called the V-SIDO (Bushido) OS and includes touchscreen support inside the cockpit as well as 3G wireless connectivity so you can control it via phone.

You can “price out” your own Mech here but rest-assured you won’t be able to drive one of these off the lot any time soon. It’s a one-off project and, as cool as it is, it only moves at about 10KM per hour.

There are some who are suggesting this is CG but considering the AFP/Getty picked up some photos of it, it looks about as real as you can get.

Tubbs And Crockett May Need To Borrow Your Handsome Bluetooth Brick Headset

If you’re heading down to Radio Shack to buy a brand new Tandy 1000 (the hottest PC out there!) then you may want to bring this handsome brick handset designed to work with your “smaller” phone via Bluetooth. You can whip this baby out in line while you write a check out for your PC, modem, and MS-DOS 3.0 purchases.

Designed by a husband and wife team, Shisa Labs, in Jersey City, NJ (the home of the rolled up sport coat sleeve), the device is ready to start tooling and shipping in a few months. It costs $85 for the early bird model. Phones will come in multiple colors including Fisher Office Supply Beige so you and your buds can color coordinate your parachute pants as you roll down to the club, Cutty-Sark-pre-party-buzz just kicking in, and talk about how great Star Cops was.

The phone lasts for about 20 hours on one charge and works with any Bluetooth compatible device including cellphones and desktops. You can also use the phone as speakerphone for Skype or just as a funny prop for the skit you’re putting on at the Lock-in down at the Junior Rec Center. They’ve hit $5,601 of their very ambitious $150,000 goal, so here’s hoping they can bring out the old Eye Of The Tiger and totally push this into the Danger Zone.

This “Xbox 360 Elite HDMI cable” should be just like any other HDMI cable in the planet, right? Wrong! According to the box, it’s a “100% Mylar” double shield 1.3c grade cable with anti-virus protection to reduce virus noises and to obtain perfect image transmission.” More »

The Police Saved a Sex Doll from Drowning Because They Thought It Was a Real Girl [Video]

“Oh my god! Is that a naked lady drowning in a river? We must help. Call backup! I’m going in after her.” That must’ve been what 18 policemen in Shandong, China were thinking when they saw a ‘woman’ submerged in the river—embarrassingly for the police, it wasn’t a real person they rescued but a sex doll. A Guy Started a Fire on a Nuclear Submarine to Leave Work Early [Wtf]

Here’s a friendly reminder for everyone who wants to leave work early: don’t ever set fire to your workplace. Especially if you work on a million nuclear submarine. Especially if you’ll cause $400 million in damage. And especially if you just want to leave early because of a silly text message argument with your ex-girlfriend. It’s completely dumb and you could possibly end up in jail for life like the idiot guy who did just that might. More »
