Activision axes 40 High Moon Studios employees upon completion of Deadpool

Pink slips were flying around the offices at High Moon Studios today as Activision has decided to lay off 40 of its full-time employees. The cuts began happening right after the High Moon Studios team completed development of Activision’s upcoming Deadpool game. Activision stated that it “works to align its costs with its revenues,” and that reducing its staff is all part of aligning “our development talent against our slate.”

Activision axes 40 High Moon Studio employees upon completion of Deadpool

While there is a massive amount of lay offs happening at High Moon Studios, development of its future Transformers games, including War of Cybertron, Dark of the Moon, and Fall of Cybertron, will not be affected. It was only back in February when Activision decided to lay off 30 full-time employees from both its offices as well as from Treyarch’s studios. It released a similar statement back then, saying that it “works to align its costs with its revenue”.

Like the employees that were laid off back in February, the employees laid off from High Moon Studios will be offered outplacement counseling services. The counseling services will help the employees through the termination of their job, and will hopefully be able to help them secure new employment elsewhere. The services usually help set up interviews, assist in job searches, offer networking services, and much more in order to help the employee transition to their next job.

Deadpool’s storyline is penned by Daniel Way, who wrote the former Deadpool comics. Deadpool’s character will be voiced by Nolan North, who has voiced Deadpool in the past. The game is a 3rd person action game with a major emphasis on guns and swords. Deadpool will break the 4th wall numerous times to offer players hints, and also to add humor to the game. Deadpool is set to launch over the summer on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the PC.

Microsoft Warns Of Circulating Scam Promising Free Xbox Points

Every day, we’re bombarded with spam that promises to make us rich, famous and well-endowed. A new scam promising “free Xbox points” seems to be circulating, which we think is the first time such a scam has even popped up.

According to Microsoft, the scam is circulating in hopes people will fall for the promise of free Microsoft points to help celebrate the company’s 38th anniversary this week. Microsoft commented on the scam through the company’s official Facebook page. “Please do not respond to [the scam],” it said in the post. “There won’t be free Xbox points for the occasion, but we hope you’ll celebrate with us nonetheless!” (more…)

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon: the one April Fool we wish wasn’t

If there’s one single joke we’ve seen today that’s so radical and excellent that we’d rather see the real product than laugh at the trick, it’s the DLC for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. In an effort to bring us back to the 1990′s, a magical time when .gif images were used as webpage decorations, the folks behind this fantastic webspace have created a site, a teaser video, and more pixelated greatness than you can shake a joystick at – enter the Blood Dragon!

header

With this presentation today we’ve seen as many people suggesting it’s a real-deal presentation as we have people saying it’s a joke. At the moment there’s no “official” word from Ubisoft, but given the build-up to this moment, we must assume it’s either going to represent one of the most daring downloadable additions to a game in recent memory OR we’re going to see a real DLC (long awaited, either way) rather soon. We’re certainly hoping for the former.

NOTE: See our full 2013 April Fool’s Day roundup now for every one of the most wild and crazy tricks tossed out today!

As noted by Gamespot, there’s already a Brazilian classification rating for the game as well as notes for the title (Blood Dragon and everything) being ready for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC soon! If you’ve been waiting anxiously for this title, you also know that Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot has made it clear that you’ll have it in your hands soon.

““Fans certainly won’t have to wait for more years for the next Far Cry.” – Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot”

Also according to Gamespot, Far Cry 3 lead writer Jeffrey Yohalem let it be known that what he was working on “will be surprising” when it’s announced. He added that, “it definitely is a ‘strike while the iron’s hot’ thing.” Could it be that this game is both a joke and a real release in one? Again, we certainly hope so!

“The year is 2007. It is the future. Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war and new paths for peace must be found. A U.S. cyborg army may have found a solution: a powerful bioweapon on a distant island. A Mark IV Cyber Commando, Sergeant Rex Power Colt has been sent over to gather information and figure out what the hell is going on.”

Have a peek at the Far Cry 3 BLOOD DRAGON official webpage right this minute and decide for yourself. Don’t forget, too, that you’ll want to enter the Konami code to get a special treat! Hint: it involves a sweet GIF!

If the website does happen to go down some day, we’ll not want to be lacking such excellence, even if only in screenshot form. Have a peek at the tiny gallery below to see what this monster is (and perhaps in the future was) all about!

Crytek intends to take Darksiders off THQ’s hands

Crytek is looking to reunite Darksiders with its original creators, Vigil. The company hired 35 of Vigil’s employees after the company failed to receive any bids back in THQ’s original auctions. Crytek launched a new studio in Austin, Texas called Crytek USA and housed all of the Vigil employees there. Crytek USA is currently headed by Vigil’s old co-founder, David Adams.

Crytek intends to take Darksiders off THQ

The bidding for Darksiders, as well as the other IPs in THQ’s back catalog auction, will begin on April 1st and will continue on through April 15th. THQ will then have to discuss the bids with the entities that it owes money to, and then it will decide on a primary bidder and back-up bidder for each of its IPs. THQ will then have to present the sales to the court, who will have to approve each sale. Everything is expected to finalize sometime in May.

David Adams tweeted, “Looking to buy @Darksiders IP back from #THQ. The IP belongs in the hands of its creators.” Ryan Stefanelli, the Principal Designer at Crytek USA, further confirmed that Crytek will be bidding for Darksiders’s IP, and that everyone is “excited at the prospect”. It’s still up in the air what Crytek plans on doing with the IP. It had already stated that it doesn’t plan on working on Darksiders 3, because it “doesn’t fit with our strategy”.

Nonetheless, fans, as well as the ex-Vigil staff, will be relieved that Darksiders will return home to its rightful owners. For those of you that are interested in playing Darksiders or Darksiders 2 for the PC, you can purchase the games for extremely cheap through this week’s Humble Bundle. You can pay $1 to get Darksiders, or a little over the average payment to get both games. You will also get Red Faction: Armageddon and Red Faction: Guerrilla.

David Hayter will not voice Snake in Metal Gear Solid V

David Hayter, who voiced Snake and Big Boss for the Metal Gear Solid series since 1998, will not be returning to voice Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. In fact, David Hayter will not be voicing Snake or Big Boss in any of the future Metal Gear Solid games from now on. Why? Because according to Hideo Kojima, Konami and him are trying to “recreate the Metal Gear series”. He stated, “It’s a new type of Metal Gear game, and we want to have this reflected it the voice actor as well.

David Hayter will not voice Snake in Metal Gear Solid V

According to Hayter, he wasn’t even contacted by Kojima or Konami about voicing the role of Snake. He confirmed through his Twitter account that he was in fact, no longer playing Snake’s voice actor. It’s speculated that Snake will be voiced by Keifer Sutherland, who played Jack Bauer in 24. Sutherland will also voice the Ishmael character in Metal Gear Solid V, so it’s strange that he’s voicing two characters in the series (although it’s not like it hasn’t been done before).

Removing Hayter as Snake’s voice actor will definitely have a negative impact on the game, and Snake’s new voice actor won’t be well-received, even if it is Keifer Sutherland. Snake had been voiced by Hayter for 12 years, since the first Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and has become Snake’s identity. Hayter is looking at the bright side of things, and tweeted, “Well look, At least I had a good run.”

Many others are also trying to be optimistic. They said that since Hayter wasn’t contacted about voicing Snake, and since the game is still very early into development, there’s still a chance that Hayter could reprise his role. Many others are also threatening to boycott Metal Gear Solid V if Hayter isn’t hired to voice Snake again. Whatever the outcome may be, we shall keep you updated. If you haven’t already seen the reveal of Metal Gear Solid V, you can check it out here.

This Dishonored Custom Xbox 360 Controller Looks Amazing

This Dishonored Custom Xbox 360 Controller Looks AmazingWe’ve seen tons of customized Xbox controllers in the past, but we can’t help but feel that perhaps this Dishonored-inspired Xbox 360 controller might take the cake. Designed by Devin Smith of End of Line Designs has finished piecing together a Dishonored Xbox 360 control pad which definitely goes beyond a mere painting or skinning. As you can see, almost every component on the surface of the controller is custom, ranging from the buttons, the grips and even the replacement of the Microsoft Xbox logo with the Dishonored symbol which appears to light up as well. While it looks pretty awesome, the metal “stitching” on the lower part of the controller might be somewhat uncomfortable after extended periods of time, but then again we have a feeling that controllers like these are meant to be admired more than played. We’re not sure if Smith will be selling his creation, but you can check out his other work and additional photos of the controller on his website.

Microsoft announces Play To Earn rewards on Xbox Live

In an effort to get Xbox Live users to play more of Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade games, the company will be launching a new “Play To Earn” rewards system on Xbox Live on April 1 that will reward gamers with free items and Microsoft Points in exchange for playing XBLA games. The new program is only available to Xbox Live Reward members, so if you aren’t a member, get signed up now to take advantage of the new rewards.

xbox-live

Microsoft currently has three ways that you’ll be able to earn new rewards. First, you can play 20 hours of any combination of XBLA games and receive a free avatar item. Second, you can purchase any combination of four XBLA games that cost at least 400 Microsoft Points each, and receive a free month of Xbox Live Gold. Lastly, you can spend 3,200 Microsoft Points on XBLA games and get 800 Microsoft Points in return.

Furthermore, Rewards members can attempt to black out all three XBLA Punchcards during the month of April, which will give themselves a spot in an “upcoming VIP Exclusives.” From the looks of it, it seems that every XBLA game will qualify you to earn rewards by playing them, and some of the most popular XBLA titles include Minecraft, Trials Evolution, Castle Crashers, The Walking Dead, and Limbo.

Furthermore, six new games will be released in the XBLA market in April. These include BattleBlock Theater, Double Dragon II, Motocross Madness, Sacred Citadel, God Mode, and Monaco. Frankly, the new Play To Earn looks pretty great, and it seems like an easy way to earn extra stuff, while playing your favorite games at the same time.
