Hearthfire DLC for Skyrim available on Xbox 360 now

Skyrim‘s latest DLC, Hearthfire, launches on Xbox 360 today, and it seems to pack a lot into a tiny download. The DLC, which lets you collect raw materials to build your dream home and adopt children (among other things), weighs in at only 75MB, meaning that it should be a pretty quick download for most folks. The pack is budget-priced too as it costs a mere 400 MSP, leading us to believe that this is a tiny DLC bonus meant to tide us over while we wait for the next expansion-like Skyrim DLC pack.

After buying up a plot of land and gathering the raw materials needed to build a house, players get to choose from a variety of rooms for their home. These range from enchanter’s towers and stables to greenhouses and an armory, and once the house is finished, players will be tasked with defending it from the beasts of Skyrim. These features first made an appearance in the Skyrim Game Jam video Todd Howard showed off at DICE 2012, and at the time Howard said that some of the Game Jam content could make it into the actual game as DLC. Hearthfire was announced only last week, making the lead up to this DLC pleasantly short.

While PC players can probably expect this DLC to land in about a month – give or take a week or two – PS3 players may never see it. Bethesda is currently struggling with the PS3 release of Dawnguard, Skyrim‘s first DLC, telling us last week that it may not be able to fix the problems its facing. If that happens, then Dawnguard may not see a release on PS3, and since Bethesda seems to be expecting the same problems with the PS3 version of Hearthfire, it stands to reason that the home-building DLC might not either.

This, obviously, has some PS3 players up in arms while Bethesda works with Sony to try to come up with a solution. It would be a shame if the PS3 missed out on these two Skyrim DLC packs, but some argue that cancelling them outright would be preferable to releasing them full of bugs. Are you buying Hearthfire today? If you’re playing Skyrim on PS3, what’s your take on this whole DLC situation?

Skyrim: Hearthfire DLC now available for download on Xbox 360

Good news gamers, if you were looking forward to playing the new Skyrim DLC, Hearthfire, as promised it has been released and is now available from the Marketplace and will cost gamers 400 MP and is about 75MB to download. As usual, the DLC will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and should be making its way onto other platforms at a later date. However given that Dawnguard has yet to be released on the PlayStation 3 due to issues and with Bethesda not being particularly thrilled at its performance, we’re not sure if Hearthfire will meet the same fate. Either way we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled and hopefully Hearthfire will prove to be a story with a happy ending for PlayStation 3 gamers. For those unfamiliar, Hearthfire is the second DLC for Skyrim and introduces the ability for gamers to build their own houses, bringing a new aspect to the game that will deviate from the usual questing and killing of monsters.

Borderlands 2 Mechromancer DLC release date outed by Gearbox

The release of the highly-anticipated Borderlands 2 is just two short weeks away, and it won’t be long after that September 18 release that the game gets its first DLC. We’ve known for a while that this DLC will add a new class – the Mechromancer – but what we didn’t know is when it will launch. This weekend at PAX Prime, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford finally gave an actual date, saying that the pack will be available “by October 16.”

That’s just about a month after the release of Borderlands 2, which is a lot sooner than what Gearbox had originally said – after the Mechromancer DLC was announced, Gearbox said that it should be available “60 to 90 days” after the release of the base game. Still, most will be happy that its arriving sooner rather than later, especially considering that it’s a free bonus for those who pre-ordered the game. For those who aren’t going to pre-order, the Mechromancer DLC will cost $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points.

After the Mechromancer DLC hits, Gearbox plans to deliver four more DLC packs for Borderlands 2, just like it did with the original Borderlands. Pitchford assured that these aren’t going to be paltry offerings either. “We have committed ourselves and are in pre-production on four campaign DLCs,” he said. “These are all big original, themed, fully built out campaign DLCs. This isn’t just ‘here have a couple of guns.” Pitchford also said that all four of these DLC packs will be similar to the scope of The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, which is widely considered to be the best DLC released for the original game.

So, we’ve got the Mechromancer DLC about four weeks after release and four General Knoxx-sized DLC packs in the pipeline. This means that we’ll be getting a nice amount of additional content for Borderlands 2, which already seems to be a massive game. Are you excited about Gearbox’s DLC plan for Borderlands 2, or does it leave you feeling a little uneasy?

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII announced by Square Enix

Square Enix isn’t quite finished with the Final Fantasy XIII series yet, as the publisher has announced another yet another installment. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is its name, and if focuses on – surpise! – Lightning, who has been a major character throughout the first two Final Fantasy XIII titles. This appears to be Lightning’s last game, as director Motomu Toriyama says that Lightning will face her final battle in this title.

Additionally, Andriasang reports that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be a “world-driven” title, which apparently means that there will be some sort of social aspect to the game. We’re not entirely sure that will go over so well with fans, but we honestly don’t know much about the feature, so it’s difficult to say whether or not players will like it. The battle system also appears to be undergoing a change with this installment, as Square Enix says that the action will be more focused on button responses. It sounds like Lightning Returns will be geared more toward the action genre than previous games, but the publisher was hesitant to mention the word “action” during its presentation.

The game was revealed at the Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Gallery in Japan, where we were told that players will have many different options when it comes to customizing Lightning. Obviously, there will be different weapons for her to use – some of which can get pretty massive – and there will be a number of different outfits to dress her in. There will be a wide range of costumes to pick from, as the Andriasang live blog says there will be “a lot more” than 10 or 20.

The game is set in a place called Navus Partus, and part of Square Enix’s presentation focused on Lexerion, the largest city in the region. We’ve been seeing Lightning’s power grow throughout the first two Final Fantasy XIII games, and Toriyama says that she will be even stronger this time around. This game will be available on consoles – not mobile or social platforms like rumors have claimed – though at the moment we’re not entirely sure which consoles it will appear on. Given that the first two Final Fantasy XIII titles were on both Xbox 360 and PS3, it seems like a safe bet that those are the platforms for Lightning Returns, but in the world of video games, you never know until it’s been confirmed. We should be getting more information on Lightning Returns soon, so keep it tuned to SlashGear for more details!

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gets first gameplay trailer

Konami and Kojima Productions were on hand at PAX to show off the latest Metal Gear Solid title, Ground Zeroes. The companies gave the audience a 15-minute demo of the game, and have since put 11 minutes of that demo up on the Internet. In it, we get to see the Fox Engine in action, and it’s safe to say that the game looks pretty amazing.

Most of the trailer below is just one long cutscene, but toward the end we do get to see some actual gameplay footage. Big Boss appears to be taking center stage in this installment, which Kojima clarified is not Metal Gear Solid 5. Instead, Ground Zeroes will serve as something of a “prologue” to Metal Gear Solid 5, so it seems that MGS 5 will happen at some point down the road. Kojima also confirmed speculation that this is an open-world title, which is a pretty big shift in the Metal Gear formula.

This game will be coming to current generation consoles, despite the fact that the Fox Engine is meant to “scale up” to next generation hardware. The Fox Engine could turn out to be a lot like Frostbite 2.0 in its use, as Kojima mentioned that it could be used for other Konami titles, such as a new Silent Hill game. Ground Zeroes is confirmed for Xbox 360 and PS3, though Kojima also seemed to suggest that it could make an appearance on next-gen consoles as well. Have a look at the full trailer below:

As you can see, the trailer is pretty impressive, and it should do a lot to get the Metal Gear Solid fanbase pumped up. At this early stage there isn’t any word on a release, but judging from the trailer, the game seems pretty far along in development. When coupled with the fact that this game will be gracing current-gen consoles, that makes us think that its release isn’t too far off. What do you think of the trailer? Are you ready for more Metal Gear Solid?

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 31, 2012

We’ve officially entered the final hours of August, and in typical SlashGear fashion, we’re sending thing off with a bang. Today’s IFA adventures didn’t produce as much news as the two days before it, but we still have plenty of hands-on posts for you to check out, just like yesterday. We got to check out a couple of Dell’s upcoming products today, spending some hands-on time with the Dell XPS Duo 12 and the more traditional Dell XPS 10. Dell wasn’t the only one showing off new computers and a tablets today though, as we also have a hands-on with HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4, SpectreXT and ENVY x2, along with a hands-on post for the new Toshiba Satellite U920t.

We also got to have a look a bunch of interesting devices and accessories today, ranging from the Lifeproof case for the iPhone4/4S and the Jarba Soulmate to the E-Ink concept phone and the iRobot Scooba 390 and 290. It was definitely an exciting day for new gadgets and devices, so be sure to look through all of those hands-on posts.

The next iPhone made an appearance in some new images today, and in them we get an idea of its measurements. Speaking of rumored iDevices, the iPad Mini has apparently popped in one app developer’s device files, and Apple may eventually face an iPhone 5 stock bottleneck due to a shortage of screens at Sharp. The Nokia Lumia 920 PureView and Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 handsets suffered a leak today (complete with images of the Lumia 820 Arrow later in the day), and Facebook had to revise its profit forecast by slashing $1 billion from it.

We were introduced to a slew of Windows 8 products today, most of which belong to Lenovo. This includes the Lenovo IdeaCentre A520, the IdeaPad Z series of notebooks, the IdeaPad U510 ultrabook and the Lenovo IdeaCentre B340 and B545 all-in-one PCs. Acer got in on the Windows 8 action as well, introducing the world to the Acer Aspire M3.

It may not be long before your Samsung device can react to your body language, today we seemed to get confirmation that the iPhone 5 is on the way with a new iPhone “recycling” program, and a round of Xbox-branded games have been confirmed for Windows 8 PCs. On the same day that reported images of the next Kindle Fire leaked, we get word that Amazon is planning to announce two new Kindle Fires at its press conference on September 6. The Samsung Galaxy Stellar appears to be hitting Verizon on that same day, and finally tonight, Bethesda has hinted that Skyrim‘s first DLC, Dawnguard, may not make it to the PS3.

That’s all for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy your weekend folks, and be sure to keep checking back with us here at SlashGear for more news from IFA 2012!

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes revealed, hints at open-world elements

As many of you already know, the Metal Gear franchise is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. What better way to celebrate than with a new game in the series? At the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event in Tokyo, Konami and Kojima Productions announced the latest installment in the series, and they’re calling it Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

Not too much is known about this new game at the moment, and above you see the only screenshot that has been shared by Konami. GameSpot was there to see the game in action, and it’s reporting that Ground Zeroes brings a number of a changes to the famous stealth series. It would appear that Ground Zeroes is an open-world game, but it’s difficult to make that call with only one live demo on the books.

GameSpot also seems to think that Solid Snake is making a return in Ground Zeroes, but that’s also difficult to call as the character was only called “Snake.” Since there wasn’t any prefix mentioned, it could definitely be someone other than Solid Snake, so we’ll have to wait until Konami dishes new details to find out more about the game’s main character.

Whoever he is, he was shown summoning a helicopter for transportation and can drive a Jeep to his next objective, which lends to the belief that this will be an open-world title. It’s also worth noting that the game won’t end when you’re discovered. If such a thing happens, Snake will be able to use all of his equipment to attempt an escape, which is another new feature Ground Zeroes is bringing to the franchise.

One thing that was there in force was the Fox engine. The game apparently looks great with the Fox engine backing it up, but then it would have to be a solid engine as Kojima says that the possibility of next generation consoles was considered while building it. Speaking of gaming platforms – we don’t know which platforms Ground Zeroes will be gracing. Kojima played through the demo using an Xbox 360 controller on a PC, so it could be that PS3, Xbox 360, and PC will all be getting it. There hasn’t been any release date announced either, so it seems that we’ll be left waiting for a lot of new information. Still, for now at least, we imagine that Metal Gear Solid fans are happy with the knowledge that a new game is on the way. SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 29, 2012

It’s IFA week, which means that we had a lot of news flooding out of Germany. Let’s get to it, shall we? Samsung and Sony both had a ton of big reveals today, and all of the coverage you could ever hope for is collected in our Samsung IFA 2012 Wrap-Up and our Sony IFA 2012 Wrap-Up. In those posts, you’ll find links to all of the major reveals and announcements both companies made today, as well links to our hands-on posts with the day’s major devices. Be sure to check those out if you’re looking for a recap of the news from Samsung and Sony’s events.

The was still some news coming out of IFA that didn’t concern Samsung or Sony, however. ASUS, for instance, revealed the Vivo Tab and the Vivo Tab RT alongside its new MX279H and MX239H monitors. Toshiba also had a reveal of its own, pulling the veil off the slide-out Satellite U925t Ultrabook, and later in the day, Epic Games and NVIDIA teamed up to announce that they’re bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows RT and Windows 8.

TiVo’s new Stream transcoder is arriving next week, and Logitech UE announced a new line of products aimed at those who like to listen to music on the go. Today we got yet another image of the Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE, while Google is now offering a Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Speaking of Google, it appears that the company wants to sell off Motorola’s Home Business division, and today it rolled out a handful of new Google+ features for businesses to take advantage of. Today President Barack Obama took to Reddit to answer questions from citizens, managing to bring the website down in the process, and Apple’s requested ban on Samsung devices has been pushed back to December.

YouTube has updated its app for Xbox 360, ARCHOS announced its new GamePad today, and Netgear announced the new N750 wireless router and gaming Wi-Fi adapter today as well. Current whispers are telling us that Windows Phone 8 will be launching on October 29, while Vimeo announced a new team up with Dropbox. Bethesda says that the PS3 delay of Dawnguard wasn’t caused by its development on Hearthfire, and the Curisoity rover’s transmission of will.i.am’s “Reach for the Stars” from the surface of Mars went off without a hitch. SkyDive is now available on Android, and finally tonight, Joss Whedon is apparently working on a ABC pilot called S.H.I.E.L.D. – we don’t need to tell you Marvel fans why that’s exciting.

Enjoy the rest of your evening folks, and be sure to keep an ear to SlashGear for more from IFA 2012!

Dawnguard PS3 wasn’t delayed because of Hearthfire, Bethesda assures

Yesterday, Bethesda announced Hearthfire, the latest DLC for Skyrim. It looks to be a charming little DLC pack, but there’s just one problem: Xbox 360 owners will be getting Hearthfire next week, but PS3 owners are still without Dawnguard, Skyrim‘s first DLC. This understandably has some PS3 players wondering if Bethesda delayed Dawnguard on PS3 so it could finish up work on Hearthfire and get it out the door quickly.

According to Bethesda’s VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines, that isn’t the case. When asked on Twitter if the delay of Dawnguard had something to do with the production of Hearthfire, Hines replied with “No, they are separate things.” When another fan expressed their disappointment in the fact that Xbox 360 players were getting their second DLC offering while PS3 owners have yet to receive their first, Hines said “We are working on multiple projects, even beyond those two things. The entire team doesn’t work on one thing at a time.”

So there you have it – multiple teams at Bethesda are working on both Dawnguard for PS3 and Hearthfire for Xbox 360. When the PC version of Dawnguard showed up a few weeks back, many were surprised to see that the PS3 version didn’t launch alongside it. At the time, Bethesda said that it wasn’t satisfied with the performance of the PS3 version, and wouldn’t be releasing it as expected. We’re still waiting for that PS3 release date, unfortunately, and Hines even said today that he didn’t have any new information to give.

Let’s take a step away from this Dawnguard debacle for a moment though and examine Hines’ words more closely. While he said that both Hearthfire and Dawnguard PS3 are in development at the moment, he also said that there are other projects in the works at Bethesda. We know that Bethesda isn’t developing the upcoming Elder Scrolls MMO, so Hines’ comments lead us to believe that Bethesda is also working on Fallout 4. DLC woes aside, that’s pretty exciting, wouldn’t you say? Keep it here at SlashGear, as we’ll update you once Bethesda spills more details on the missing PS3 version of Dawnguard.

NVIDIA, Epic Games bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT video

NVIDIA and Epic Games have successfully ported the full PC version of Unreal Engine 3 to both Windows 8 and, more importantly, Windows RT. Demonstrating the achievement on a Tegra 3-powered ASUS Vivo Tab RT, it played a buttery-smooth version of Epic Citadel, suggesting that developers of both PC and Xbox games should have no problem in bringing them over to the new operating system. It also casually mentioned that both Gears of War and Mass Effect were built on the engine, heavily implying that we could see titles of that caliber coming to Microsoft’s low-power OS once it makes it debut on October 26th, but we’ll let you decide for yourself after the break.
