Xbox Live Goes Political with Election 2012 Hub

Microsoft has announced that it will be launching a new hub for the 2012 presidential elections on Xbox Live. The hub is called the Election 2012 Hub on Xbox Live. Original huh? The hub will be available via Xbox Live for Xbox 360 owners, and will offer a variety of interactive live election coverage.

Content available in the hub will include election news, convention coverage, presidential debates, facts about candidates and issues, and more. The hub will include content from Face the Facts USA, Rock the Vote, YouGov, and NBCNews.com. The NBC content will include daily election programming covering the latest news, and analysis on candidates.

The hub will go live on August 27 for Xbox Live members. Users will also be able to respond to poll questions offered during live programming of the debates and other special election events.

Even more Grand Theft Auto V screenshots released by Rockstar

Like clockwork, Rockstar has released another round of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots. The developer has been slowly releasing these screenshots throughout the week, starting with three on Monday and another three on Wednesday. By the time Wednesday’s screenshots had hit, we assumed that Rockstar would release another batch today, and it turns out we were right.

This time around, however, there are four screenshots instead of just three. Pretty awesome, right? Monday’s screenshot gave us a look at transportation, Wednesday’s offered a glimpse at leisure activities, but today it’s all business baby. As with the screenshots from earlier in the week, these ones don’t give much away, but you should be used to nondescript teases by now if you’re a fan of Rockstar.

In the images, we have a police officer chasing what appears to be a person stealing a car from the back of a semi truck, a small plane flying over a rather scenic river, the necessary and inevitable car chase (complete with an extremely low-flying helicopter) and finally, in what might just be the most detailed GTA V screenshot yet, we have an image of a man aiming his gun at a police helicopter that has him in the spotlight. This brings the total number of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots to 10 for the week, though as stated above, we still don’t know all that much about the game itself.

Rockstar has obviously planned it that way, wanting us to guess at what we’ll be getting with Grand Theft Auto V as it slow lets new details trickle out. Sadly, it looks like this is the end of the new Grand Theft Auto V media for a while, but Rockstar does say that it will be back in a few weeks with more. Whatever Rockstar will be revealing next, we’ll have it for you right here at SlashGear, so be sure to keep checking back.

Netflix for Xbox 360 gets People Search

Netflix is one of the most popular and widely used video streaming platforms out there. People can get access to Netflix using all sorts of hardware devices from smart TVs to video game consoles. Netflix is currently available on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360. PS3 users have been able to conduct a people search for a while now.

Netflix has announced that the People Search feature is now available for the Netflix app on the Xbox 360. Apparently, People Search landed with the update that brought the Just for Kids section to the Xbox 360 and Netflix is now shining the limelight on the feature. Netflix says that the feature is available when entering text into the search box using either a controller or Kinect.

The search will begin offering content related to the text you enter including TV shows, movies, and actors or directors. I typically find this feature on the PS3 to be of very limited use. You end up getting search returns having nothing to do with the text you type in my experience. Netflix uses an example of users typing “nic” into the search field.

That example, and the screenshot above, shows how random the search feature is. You end up with returns for Anna Nicole Smith, any movie with the letters “NIC” in the title, and returns for actors such as Nicholas Cage, Nicole Kidman, and Jack Nicholson. If you happen to be looking for a film with Nicholas Cage, you can click his name and movies on the service with Cage will be offered. I wish you could turn some of these features on and off in search. When I run a search I’m looking for a specific title and it would be nice if only films that start with the letters I type in showed up. Am I the only one who feels that way?

US presidential campaign trail winds its way to Xbox Live on August 27th with Election 2012 Hub

US presidential campaign trail winds its way to Xbox Live on August 27th with Election 2012 Hub

Can’t get enough coverage of the US presidential race even with YouTube in the mix? Microsoft’s Election 2012 Hub for Xbox Live may be able to satisfy your inner political junkie. Redmond’s initiative will provide video of town hall events at both the Democratic and Republican national conventions, daily content from NBC and full coverage of results as ballots are cast and counted on November 6th. Throughout live streams of the debates, users will be able to rate the performances of public office hopefuls and see what marks other viewers give them in real-time. Information on voter registration, politicians and their take on issues will also be included. According to Microsoft, roughly 40 percent of Xbox-owning voters surveyed aren’t concretely committed to a candidate running for the Oval Office, placing them in the highly-prized swing voter category. The service won’t launch until the Grand Old Party’s powwow kicks off on August 27th, but we hear there’s plenty of relevant reading to keep you busy until then.

Visceral shares new Dead Space 3 screenshots

We still have about five months to wait until Dead Space 3 finally arrives (yes, it’s still that far off), but Visceral Games and Electronic Arts been kind enough to share a collection of brand new screenshots to help tide us over. There are 10 in all, and they give glimpse at a variety of different things including Necromorphs, space, and even a couple new weapons. There are also some images of Isaac himself in his new armor, and we have to say he’s looking pretty good for a person who has been through two horrific encounters with the Necromorphs.

Truth be told, these new screenshots all look beautiful and do absolutely nothing to help with the anticipation. Dead Space is a series that deserves a lot of attention, and Dead Space 3 is shaping up to be an excellent-looking game. Then again, we’d expect to it be excellent after playing through the first two titles of the series.

If anything, that’s what Visceral is likely to struggle with this time around. The first two Dead Space titles received rave reviews thanks to their engaging (and thoroughly creepy) stories. It’s going to be hard to keep that momentum going into a third installment, and it seems that Visceral knows this, as the studio is make a few changes to the Dead Space formula this time around. The game will take place on the frozen planet Tau Volantis, which is already a pretty big departure from the two previous games, but Visceral is also tossing a new companion into the mix with Dead Space 3.

Given these changes, a few are understandably hesitant about the game, but many more are remain excited nonetheless. You can count us among the latter group, because as stated above, Dead Space 3 looks set to impress. Sadly, we still have that five month wait ahead of us, and after viewing these screenshots, February 5 seems a lot further off than it did before.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 23, 2012

Welcome to Thursday folks – just one more work day to go and another weekend will be here. Today a new video gave us a look at reported iPhone 5 parts, and it seems that the iPhone will be sporting a new look with the next iteration. Recent whispers are saying that Nokia will reveal a total of three new Windows Phone devices during its September 5 event in New York City, and today Microsoft updated its logo for the first time in a whopping 25 years.

Twitter has taken away Tumblr Friend Finder functionality, and the inexpensive T-Mobile Concord has launched to bring 4G to budget-minded consumers. It was recently discovered that the SMS security hole known to plague iPhones doesn’t affect other devices running a different OS like Android or BlackBerry, and LG has apparently started working on the screen that may end up gracing the iPhone 5. Speaking of the iPhone, it seems that production on the next model has slowed thanks to a shortage of supplies.

The FCC has approved Verizon’s bid to buy up additional 4G LTE spectrum, and the Xbox 360 will be offering users election coverage starting next week, complete with live streams of the three debates that are planned. A large percentage of consumers are saying that they don’t need 4G LTE service, despite the fact that carriers are advertising it like mad. There’s a new OS X Mountain Lion update on the scene, and it’s bringing some software fixes with it, while today we received word that Facebook’s storage requirements grow by 500TB each and every day.

Sony Mobile has announced that it will be laying off 1,000 employees by March 2014, and the jury that is deciding the Apple and Samsung patent case decided to put in a little bit of overtime today. Paypal will be teaming up with Discover to bring its service to a ton of retail locations, Nissan will be giving prospective buyers of its 2013 Pathfinder a virtual tour of the car with a little help from Kinect, and Amazon has a new event coming up next month, where we’re thinking it will announce a brand new Kindle Fire. It just so happens that we’ll be at that event, so if there is a new Kindle Fire announced, you’ll be able to read all about it here at SlashGear.

Finally tonight, we have a brand new hands-on with the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Enjoy the rest of your evening everyone, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow night for Friday’s edition of the Wrap-Up!

Xbox 360 to offer hub for 2012 election coverage

Starting later on this month (Monday, August 27 to be exact), the Xbox 360 dashboard will transform into a hub for coverage of the 2012 presidential election. Microsoft announced today that it will be providing Xbox 360 owners with full election coverage, and from the sounds of things, those who are interested will be able to find all the information they could ever want about the election come August 27.

Microsoft isn’t offering this election hub by itself, however, as it has a teamed up with a number of different companies to deliver all-encompassing coverage. Users will be able to register to vote through the dashboard thanks to the Rock the Vote campaign, while Face the Facts USA will be offering information on both candidates. There will also be “live daily polling” provided by the folks at YouGov, so Xbox 360 users will be able to keep up with the rest of the community’s thoughts on the election.

Microsoft has also teamed up with NBC News to deliver daily video content on the election. Perhaps most importantly, Xbox users will be able to watch the three planned presidential debates along with live streams from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions through their consoles. That’s where YouGov’s live polling comes in, as Xbox 360 owners will be able to vote in polls during the debates.

As always, there’s a bit of a catch: most of this coverage will be available to all Xbox Live users, but the really important stuff – the debates and the coverage from NBC – will only be available to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Other than the Gold requirement (which was to be expected, really), this sounds like a pretty great way to get gamers involved in the election, and the information from Face the Facts USA will undoubtedly be appreciated while the candidates are offering their own take on things during the debates. Will you be watching the debates through your Xbox 360?

Writing on the Halo Waypoint blog, community manager Jessica Shea says that 343′s goal in creating the achievements for Halo 4 was to “reward milestones and increase replay value while balancing both difficulty and the breadth of game modes.” She also says that a secondary priority was to come up with ridiculous names for the achievements, and as you can see from the list below, the studio appears to have accomplished that. So there you have it folks, 49 achievements in all. There seems to be a healthy balance of single player and multiplayer achievements, but obviously you’ll need to play both modes (and play around in Forge and the Theater a little bit) if you want to snag all of them. Some of them sound quite simple to get, while in true Halo fashion, others will be ridiculously hard. Halo 4 launches on November 6 for Xbox 360. Are you ready?

Microsoft Cuts Kinect Price by 36%

If you’ve been holding out on buying yourself a Kinect for your Xbox 360 because you thought the $150 price was too much, you may want to reach for your wallet now. Microsoft has announced a price cut for the Xbox 360 Kinect of $40. The price cut will apparently be permanent, so it sucks to be you if you just bought one at full price.

kinect tb

The new official price for the Kinect is $109.99(USD) in the United States. A price cut is also coming to the rest of North America and Asia-Pacific countries as well. In October, the price will drop in Australia and New Zealand. This will make European and Japanese fans of the Kinect angry. Apparently, there are no plans to cut the price in those countries.

This should spur adoption of the Kinect in the US for people who aren’t really are interested in the device for gaming. I’ll admit that Kinect games were interesting for about two days and then the motion controls lost their luster for me. However, with other Xbox 360 apps such as Netflix and the menus being navigable using the Kinect the device is becoming increasingly more useful outside of gaming, and is certainly the darling of the hacking and interactive community.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 22, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday, folks. This particular hump day saw news that the Department of Justice and the FBI have brought down a trio of websites that dealt in pirated Android apps, while a picture of a mini dock USB cable for the iPhone 5 surfaced as well. Microsoft announced a number of things related to the Xbox 360 today, kicking off a search for people to beta test its new dashboard update, permanently dropping the price of the Kinect by $40, and announcing Xbox 360 Essentials packs, which come packed with accessories to accommodate Xbox 360 owners.

The FTC has ended its investigation of Facebook’s Instagram purchase, though the FTC wrapped things up rather silently. LG has a massive new 4K HDTV available now in South Korea, HP posted less-than-stellar results for quarter 3 of its fiscal year, and today NASA talked about how the Curiosity rover has been getting around on the surface of Mars. Today also brought some new sample shots of the Nikon CoolPix S800c Android camera, along with a new video demo for the device.

We got a closer look at the Archos Gen10 XS tablet line today, and the struggling HTC is planning to cut the price on its One series of phones after the line posted disappointing sales. T-Mobile announced that it will begin offering nationwide unlimited 4G next month, while Rockstar delivered a new round of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots today, and we have a feeling that move screenshots are coming sometime later this week, so keep an eye out for those.

AT&T has reiterated its decision to block FaceTime, and cited an FCC ruling in support of it. Verizon looks be gearing up to offer a Nokia Windows Phone 8 later this year, and sadly, Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo Power magazine will be shutting down in December. NASA has kicked off a simulation meant to test landing on a near-Earth asteroid, and there’s a new iPhone app on the scene that will help you determine which Super PACs are putting out those constant political ads. Black Isle Studios appears to have risen from the dead, but no one seems to know the circumstances surrounding the re-opening.

Finally tonight, we have a review of the new Archos 101 XS tablet by Chris Burns. Enjoy the rest of your evening, everyone!
