Minecraft for Xbox 360 to get new skins

Minecraft Xbox 360 SkinsOne of the most fun things about Minecraft is the ability to customize the game pretty much anyway you want including how your character looks – at least on the PC, Mac and Linux versions. Folks playing it on the Xbox 360 don’t have access to most of the customizations available on the other platforms but it looks like an upcoming update will help make things a little better. According to reports online, the 1.7.3 update for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition will give players a selection of a bunch of skins to choose from in addition to the ability to purchase the first skin pack for the game.

No idea on how much it’s going to cost, but I predict a lot of users are going to be unhappy about having to pay for something that’s available freely elsewhere. In addition to the new skins, the 1.7.3 patch will introduce new features such as the addition of pistons, stackable fences, shears, and more. Anybody excited for the upcoming Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition patch?

Xbox 8 (Infinity) set for 360 replacement

This week a collection of domain names have been transferred from Chinese cybersquatter (not as dirty as it sounds) to Microsoft, one of them being not Xbox720, but Xbox8.com. This domain name could very well represent the 8th Xbox in the very distant future, but more likely it’s got to do with either the infinity sign or the imminent release of Windows 8 – made ready and willing to work with the Xbox in a massive amount of ways, most of them involving content sharing.

Microsoft also picked up xboxcompanion.com, xboxlivetv.com, xboxphone.com, and xboxtabletcom. These names are for the most part more than likely being transferred as Microsoft owns the rights to the world “Xbox”, but the 8 symbol appears much to indicative of the future to be coincidental. The Microsoft Xbox 720, as it’s been called in the press thus far, will likely be released inside the year 2013 – it at least that’s what we’ve been hypothesizing up until this point.

Now the possibility opens up that Microsoft will be accelerating their plans to release the next-generation Xbox to compete directly with the imminent Nintendo WiiU release. Though the original Wii has thus far tended to a slightly different audience than the Xbox and its most direct competition in the Playstation, the WiiU and it’s Batman-touting gaming skills may well have triggered something in the minds of the engineers behind the Microsoft-backed box.

Have a peek at the timeline below to keep up to date with all things Xbox in the very recent past – stay tuned as Windows 8 continues to gain power before it’s release as well – soon there will be a massive convergence of all things Microsoft!

Halo 4 Multiplayer to require at least 8GB of storage

Halo 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the 2012. While some fans cannot wait for the new campaign, most are just excited for the addicting Halo multiplayer they all know and love  and what new features it will have to offer. Unfortunately, the requirements for Halo 4 multiplayer have been released today by Xbox, and if you are a little short on storage you better start clearing up your hard drive.

To play the multiplayer version, you’ll need at least 8GB of free space to enjoy the game. If you have the 4GB model of the Xbox 360, don’t worry as you can use your own USB drive or the official XBOX 360 USB flash drive (by SanDisk). To play the game at the highest level, it is highly recommended that you invest in a hard drive if you do not already have one built into your 360 console.

You can purchase the official Xbox 360 Media Drive for that extra space. It comes with 320GB of space and also comes with Lego Star Wars III pre-loaded onto the hard drive. All this extra space will set you back $130. Extra space is definitely helpful on any 360 console, especially with games that have large save files such as Skyrim(and to download the new Dawnguard DLC). Let us know if you are excited for the new Halo 4 and if yes have you already pre-ordered it? Halo 4 will be released on November 6th 2012.

Resident Evil 6 demo now available for Xbox 360 Dragon’s Dogma players

Resident Evil 6If all the video footage and news stories about Resident Evil available online isn’t enough to satisfy your cravings for the game – you’re in luck if you own an Xbox 360 and a copy of Dragon’s Dogma. Capcom announced today that the Resident Evil 6 demo that was promised with Dragon’s Dogma is now live. All you have to do is head over to the Xbox marketplace, and redeem your code that is written on the back of the Dragon’s Dogma manual to start your download.

I don’t own an Xbox 360 so I can’t tell you what you’re missing out on, but if Capcom delivers what is promised in all the released video footage of the game, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be one hell of a ride (at least until the demo ends). For those of you with an Xbox 360 and the game, what are you waiting for? Check it out and let us know what you think.

Microsoft catches a break: ITC remands Motorola case, Xbox 360 dodges at least a 2012 ban

Microsoft and Motorola

Things were looking grim for gaming in April, when the International Trade Commission decided that the Xbox 360 violated Motorola patents and the console’s US future was in doubt. The agency hasn’t necessarily reversed its decision, but it just gave Microsoft a significant (and possibly permanent) reprieve. The Commission has remanded Motorola’s case back to the Administrative Law Judge that gave the initial ruling, which very nearly restarts the clock: a new ruling won’t come for months, and the usual review process guarantees even more of a delay even if the decision once more works in Motorola’s favor. Patent suit watcher Florian Mueller is now confident that the Xbox 360 won’t face any real risk of a ban in 2012, at a minimum. If the new decision doesn’t clear Microsoft outright, it still pushes any ruling past a Microsoft lawsuit’s trial in mid-November, when Motorola might be blocked from attempting any ban using its standards-based patents. We’ve rarely seen a majority or total reversal of this kind of ITC patent dispute before it reaches the appeals stage, but there’s a distinct chance of that flip happening here — especially as the ITC is using Apple’s successful dismissal of an S3 Graphics victory as the judge’s new template.

Epic Games iOS Infinity Blade is company’s most profitable

Epic Games has an interesting little factoid that it wants you to be aware of. Its iPhone/iPad game Infinity Blade is more profitable than Gears of War. That is, of course, if you look at it on a relative scale. Obviously, the company’s total revenue brought in by its blockbuster console titles far outweighs that of any of its mobile endeavors.

But the cost of creating, marketing, and distributing Gears of War, for example, and monstrous. And when you look at a strict scale of dollars spent versus dollars earned, Infinity Blade is at the top. So yes, Epic co-founders Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein have gone on record as calling the iOS title the “most profitable game we’ve ever made.”

Now of course, Epic could not exist if it only made games like Infinity Blade. If you spend $10 to make a game and earn $50 in sales, but another game costs you $1 million to make $3 million, no company in the world is going to choose the former. But it is still a very salient statistic, since many companies still consider the mobile space nothing more than a cash suck. For many, it’s still a platform for testing and research, but Epic is proof that it can be very profitable.

Sony PSN a more reliable revenue stream than Xbox Live

Sony has been monetizing its online gaming network at a stronger rate than its biggest competitor. That is, if you don’t count the cost of Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus. We’re only talking about payments for individual pieces of content, like game add-ons, full game downloads, TV shows, and movies, and other pay-per-title forms of media. More than 15% of PS3 owners have paid for a piece of digital content on their console.

Only 11% of Xbox 360 owners made a purchase decision through their Xbox 360. “Although the digital market is growing, consumers are at present choosing to engage with both physical and digital content, rather than switching from one format to the other,” said Kantar Worldpanel manager Fiona Keenan. Kantar conducted a study to look at premium download behavior on game consoles in the UK. So these numbers apply to that region, though it’s probably a similar case in the US.

There have been other reports to show that PS3 users are more likely to take their consoles online so this statistic shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. However, Microsoft is being incredibly bullish when it comes to entertainment content on the Xbox 360. It wants your Xbox to be everything – your cable box, your stereo, your pay-per-view set-top box, your Web browser, and your photo album.

Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski wants to have better Kinect

Game development genius Cliff Bleszinski, known colloquially as “Cliffy B,” has spoken out about his feelings on Microsoft’s motion-sensing peripheral. In a recent interview, he said, “There are not a lot of things that wound up in there. There’s one thing actually that you just reminded me of though, is that we are not supporting Kinect in Gears Judgment.”

“I like Kinect, I’ve been a fan of it, but I don’t think it has been fully realised as far as the potential of the device. Dance Central 3 looks great and all, but I’m curious how the ‘core’ games will work out,” he continued. The evolution of Kinect has certainly been interesting to watch. When it was first announced as Project Natal, Microsoft used a whole lot of lofty marketing language to describe it as the most revolutionary thing in gaming history.

And then, for the first year in its existence, Kinect was used as little more than just another version of the Wii Remote, with mini-games and corny gesture controls dominating the peripheral’s scope. Now, though, Kinect seems to finally be coming into its prime. Although it is a bit different than Microsoft’s initial vision of controller-free gaming, the device is finding its place in hardcore games.

Epic Games: Infinity Blade on iOS more profitable by the pound than any other game we’ve made

Infinity Blade 1 on iPad

Traditional console makers have often sworn up and down that mobile doesn’t make money for game development. That might still be true for some developers, but you’ll get a very different answer if you ask Epic Games. Co-founders Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein have collectively described the currently iOS-only, Chair-developed Infinity Blade as the “most profitable game we’ve ever made” when considering the amount of money and time invested relative to the money coming back. Yes, that includes even the Gears of War series, which most consider Epic’s primary cash cow. Sweeney, like his long-time competitor Johh Carmack at id Software, is also taken aback by the power stuffed inside the latest generation of mobile devices — a 2012 iPad is nearer the performance of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, he tells Gamasutra, and the pace is only picking up. Even more insights await in the interview with Sweeney; click below if you want a hint of what one of gaming’s pioneers has to say about where your tablets, phones and (yes) PCs are going.
