Xbox Surface Specs Are Not Credible

The rumor mill may not be a great source of information , but it is a great source of discussion topics. For example, take the example of that Xbox Surface 7″ gaming tablet rumor: according to The Verge, Microsoft would be at the “initial hardware planning” stage for such a device for which the rumor started around June 18.  We’ve covered the rumor earlier today, but let’s look at it from a different angle:

What should be the goal of an Xbox Surface? If the goal is to be able to play Xbox 360 games via downloads, that would be worthwhile and rather awesome. Technically speaking, it’s not completely out of the question either: after all, the Xbox 360 hardware is rather old and it is “conceptually possible” to rival it with modern tablet-sized hardware, although this is not proven. But even then, this is “pushing it” and it’s not a trivial exercise to cram an Xbox 360 functionality into a Surface-like format.

If the Xbox Surface is not compatible with existing games, it would end up being a lame duck that is stuck with the Windows Store games (which?) or the XNA games, which basically represent 0% of the AAA titles.

Xbox Surface gaming tablet reportedly in the works [Rumor]

Just as we thought that the Surface RT was enough, The Verge is reporting that Microsoft is also working on a 7-inch Xbox Surface. Yes, you got that right. Multiple sources who are familiar with Microsoft’s plans reportedly told the publication that Redmond is building its own 7-inch gaming-centric tablet. The Verge adds that the Xbox Surface tablet will be powered by an ARM processor that’s supported by a high-bandwidth RAM. However, the specs could change anytime to make way for an unannounced Intel processor. As for its operating system, the rumored Xbox Surface tablet will reportedly drop a full Windows version in favor of a customized Windows kernel with messaging capabilities and other functionalities commonly found on tablets.

Production-wise, the Xbox Surface tablet is being developed in a “secret hardware production” process that is separated from other Xbox manufacturing partners. “We’ve learned that part of the Xbox Surface is being developed at Microsoft’s offices in Silicon Valley. The software giant recently locked down several Xbox-related buildings, limiting employee access to the company’s Interactive Entertainment Business division,” writes The Verge. Responding to the Xbox Surface rumor, a Microsoft spokesperson said that the company will not comment on rumors or speculation.
