XCOM: Enemy Within Gets Game Changing Additions

XCOM: Enemy Within Gets Game Changing AdditionsXCOM: Enemy Unknown happened to be one of the better games to roll out in 2012, where it took off with a new lease of life to pay homage to the first XCOM: Enemy Unknown that was released on the PC platform all those years ago when a 486DX2-66 was the bomb. In that title, you played the role of a commander of the counter-extraterrestrial agency XCOM, and had to make difficult decisions on macro and micro levels.

Well, if you could not get enough of that title, we have already read about how XCOM: Enemy Within has been confirmed sometime in the middle of this year, and this particular expansion of the original game will see a slew of new maps, new equipment, new aliens, a mechanized soldier class, and new genemods which are able to turn your regular human troops into superhuman killing machines.

According to Ananda Gupta, XCOM: Enemy Within will be an expansion to last year’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and on the PS3 platform, gamers will be able to enjoy the whole XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the entire DLC which was released for that title, as well as all the new stuff that will arrive with Enemy Within, in the Commander’s Edition. Good things certainly come to those who wait, don’t they?

XCOM: Enemy Unknown DLC “Too Big” For Consoles

XCOM: Enemy Unknown DLC “Too Big” For ConsolesThere are some gaming titles that are classified as surefire blockbusters, while others might not be so commercially successful, but are deemed to be classics that need to be played at least once in your lifetime. I will leave it to you as to how you want to categorize XCOM: Enemy Unknown, considering it proved to be one of the most uniquely compelling games that rolled out last year, but unfortunately, the DLC (downloadable content) for this game has been deemed to be just “too big” for consoles.

The soon to arrive DLC, known as Enemy Within, will comprise of a ton of upgrades and content, where among them includes new unit types and even skill alterations. This would mean a total re-release of the game, which is why we are due to check out the special Commander’s Edition. This particular edition will boast of the original game, Slingshot and Elite Soldier add-ons, as well as the Enemy Within expansion. If you are interested in just purchasing the DLC, it will be available on the PC and Mac platforms for $30 a pop.

Firaxis Games senior producer Garth DeAngelis said, “For the expansion on the PC, it was fairly straightforward. But when it came to the consoles, it was too big. If we wanted to deliver the same content to the console players, we had to do it this way as a standalone expansion on a disc. We couldn’t simply just patch it in.”

    XCOM: Enemy Within Title Leaked

XCOM: Enemy Within Title Leaked Leaks seem to be rather common these days, be they hardware or software, and this time around, it would be the software pipe that has sprung a leak somewhere. Apparently, the XCOM: Enemy Within title has been leaked from a South Korean ratings board, where it has also been listed for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. This is clearly an interesting leak if the contents of it proved to be true, since The Bureau: XCOM Declassified (you can check out the official trailer of it that was released some time back already) has not even been released, and here we are with whispers of an XCOM: Enemy Unknown sequel. Oh, and just a note, XCOM: Enemy Unknown has also made its way to the iOS platform so that those who missed the boat last time many years back will be able to get hooked more than a decade later.

I guess with this leak, one is able to classify XCOM: Enemy Within under the folder of “Rumored Projects”, where the listing also claimed that it will make its way to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown invades iOS devices on June 20th

The world is under attack once more, and it’s up to your squad of elite, turn-based soldiers to keep humanity safe. We’ve just gotten word that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is headed to a wide variety of iOS devices come this Thursday, June 20th. Everything from the iPad 2 to the fifth-gen iPod touch is getting a taste of Firaxis’ XCOM effort — should users choose to fork over the $19.99 asking price, that is.

Aside from multiplayer (which is coming via free update post-launch), the iOS version is just about the same as its console and PC counterpart — you build up resources and strike back against the alien menace threatening to tear apart Earth, with the occasional break to torturously study the enemy via “dissection.” Whether the enemy is still alive at that point, well, that’s a question for your science team. For a full list of supported iOS devices, head below the break. As for Android and Windows Phone 8 support? “We’ve only announced plans for iOS devices at this time,” was all a 2K Games rep would tell us. Not exactly a hard no, but not a confirmation either.

XCOM FPS Becomes ‘The Bureau: XCOM Declassified’; Releasing August 20

Before XCOM: Enemy Unknown was made available on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as a turn-based strategy game, it was supposed to be a first-person shooter. The XCOM shooter mysteriously disappeared with its existence not even acknowledged by 2K Games of Firaxis, but today, both companies have announced its FPS XCOM game will finally be made available later this year.

The game will be called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and will take place in 1962 back when John F. Kennedy was in the White House and will play as the origin story for the modern XCOM initiative, which we’re sure by now you’re aware is what we experienced in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. In XCOM Declassified, players will assume the role of Special Agent William Carter as he takes customizable agents into the field. Gameplay will be in real-time, which is a departure for the series since its previous games have been turn-based, and the death of squad mates will still be permanent. (more…)

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Coming To iOS This Summer

XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s developer Firaxis not only unveiled a mysterious trailer which we believe hints at more XCOM goodness coming in the coming months, but they also had a little treat for iOS users as they announced their recently released game will be making its way to iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices everywhere later this summer.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown for iOS is a complete port of the popular PC & console strategy game and is said to not cut anything out as everything you can expect out of previously released versions of XCOM will be made available in its iOS version. “It is a straight port,” XCOM lead designer Jake Solomon says. “We have not made any gameplay exceptions. You play the exact same game… it’s just now fully playable on an iPhone or an iPad.” (more…)

X-COM: Enemy Unknown demo now on Steam

Steam has made available the demo for X-COM: Enemy Unknown, where this demo works on the PC platform at the moment, sporting a couple of tutorial missions. Not only that, we do know that the demo too, will arrive on both Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms ‘soon’, although we are rather wary of that word since it is extremely relative. 2K Games announced that this particular demo will offer a couple of levels from the single-player campaign, where players will be introduced to the nuances of combat controls as well as the X-COM base which primarily sees action for soldier training and to research alien technology.

For those of you who actually played MicroProse’s classic turn-based strategy series in the past, back when games still came on floppy disks, you might want to check out the demo of X-COM: Enemy Unknown in order to see how this contemporary update has managed to roll back the years, making you wish that games these days come with the kind of imaginative wonder back then. The full copy of X-COM: Enemy Unknown will arrive at retail stores on October 12th on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.
