While Sony undergoes its transformation under Kaz Hirai, there’s a suspicion that many of its divisions have just been treading water. Take the Xperia Ion, for instance. The company’s AT&T LTE flagship shipped in June, yet still carried the dead weight of Gingerbread as the albatross around its neck. Sony’s engineering prowess produced sleek hardware, a cracking display, good camera and it was priced at $99 — but was that a draw with a two-year-old operating system and 2011-era internals? Probably not. But if you were in the minority who bought one of these, what do you think? If you were sure Sony’s engineering gurus were reading your every word, what would you tell them to do differently next time?

Sony to start Xperia upgrades to Jelly Bean by mid-Q1, rules out all 2011 phones
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe’ve got mixed news for those who were wondering just where Sony’s Jelly Bean updates were headed. The good? Sony has narrowed down its upgrade schedule for the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V to the middle of 2013’s first quarter, or roughly February. Just about every other reasonably capable 2012 model is also getting an upgrade once Sony has narrowed down the timetable, ranging from the Xperia S through to the Xperia ion and Xperia go. Brace yourself for the dark side of the news, however: not a single 2011 Xperia phone will make the Jelly Bean leap, no matter how quick or recent it might be. The company was “not able to guarantee” the experience the devices would have with the newer OS, we’re told. While we know that some older phones would have been borderline at best, that cutoff won’t be pleasant for anyone whose Xperia Arc S is already out of the Android upgrade loop after less than a year.

Sony Xperia Ion from AT&T receives Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update officially
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt was nearly a week ago when we reported that there were a few users who claimed to have started to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system update on their respective Sony Xperia Ion devices, but up till then, there was no official word from AT&T having done so. Well, things have definitely changed – and for the better, I might add, today, where Ice Cream Sandwich is readily available for the masses over at AT&T who are rocking to the Sony Xperia Ion. Better late than never, considering how this is still one step behind in terms of the Android “version count”, where Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is the latest and greatest version of the mobile operating system at this point in time.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is touted to make your handset easier to use, and also more powerful than ever before. Just to refresh your memory, some of the new features include an improved browser with better page loading, tabbed browsing, offline reading and desktop mode. Not only that, you will be able to benefit from new lock/unlock features, ranging from the ability to unlock directly to the camera, text messaging, phone dialer, home screen or use Face Unlock. There are other features that accompany the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update as well which you would be able to check out once you’ve updated your device.

At long last, the illustrious Android ICS refresh can finally be enjoyed by proud owners of that AT&T-branded Xperia Ion. Naturally, this long-awaited update brings a slew of new features over to Sony’s 4.6-inch handset, including an enhanced browser, offline reading mode, the beloved facial unlocking method first introduced with Ice Cream Sandwich and the promise of improvements in mobile hotspot / WiFi speeds. Additionally, AT&T says there are other tweaks in calendar and email that should, in theory, help you stay better organized, while the Maps and YouTube should also perform better “when rotating between portrait and landscape views.” Sound good? You’ll find all the setup details at the source below, and don’t forget to tell us how it’s playing out for you.

Android 4.0 for AT&T’s Sony Xperia Ion reportedly rolling out to some users
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you own the Sony Xperia Ion on AT&T’s network you’re probably a little annoyed that the owners of the international version of the phone have already received their Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. Well fret not as according to reports on the XDA forums, it seems that some AT&T users have reported that the Android 4.0 ICS update for the AT&T version of the Xperia Ion has shown up in SuS, Sony’s PC companion software. The update will bump your phone’s software build up to 6.1.c.1.105 and will introduce the features that many have come to known, and possibly love, in Ice Cream Sandwich. No official word from AT&T yet so we’re not sure if this is a full rollout or maybe just a test rollout to select users. If you have received the update via SuS, let us know the comments below!

There is nothing quite like a snippet from a Twitter account to end the week on the right note, especially if you are a Sony Xperia ion owner who has long been waiting for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. Yes sir, a tweet from Rogers, one of the wireless carriers in Canada, have revealed that the Xperia ion is indeed on the receiving end of the Ice Cream Sandwich update which is tipped to arrive sometime next week, although there is no word on the actual release date.
Just to recap, the Sony Xperia ion was released worldwide in June where it came with a 12-megapixel camera that does 1080p recording, allowing it to even shoot a whole music video in the process. Apart from that, you get 13.2GB of internal memory, a 4.6″ LED display at 720 x 1280 resolution, and a Snapdragon S3 1.5GHz dual-core chipset. Are you looking forward to this delicious operating system update?

Our mobile phones these days have certainly come a long way in the photography department, where movie files used to be (and still are for some phones) recorded in the 3GP format which resulted in less than stellar quality. Now our smartphones are capable of recording Full HD 1080p movies so putting together high quality videos (video quality, not content quality) using our mobile phones is becoming more common. Perhaps to demonstrate the quality of the Xperia ion’s camera, Sony and the band Metric have released a music video for the song “Synthetica” that has been shot entirely using the Xperia ion. Directed by Chris Lenox Smith, if you’re wondering what the Xperia ion’s camera is capable of, check out the video above for yourself. In the meantime the phone is available from AT&T for $99.99 with a new two-year contract.
