AT&T Sony Xperia TL Receives Jelly Bean Update

AT&T Sony Xperia TL Receives Jelly Bean UpdateThey say that good things always come to those who wait, and for folks who happen to own the Sony Xperia TL while being subscribers to AT&T will be able to work up a smile, as their Android-powered smartphone is said to finally receive its Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update after all this while, where it is said to deliver a far smoother user interface experience in addition to an extended battery mode option.

Apart from that, the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update will also bring with it integrated HDR camera capability, while some users have reported that Wi-Fi connectivity does seem to be a whole lot more stable than before the update was applied. Not only that, the browser quick commands wheel that is located in the labs section is a well oiled machine, and is more responsive this time around, with the keyboard making more sense. Those who are interested in applying the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for their Xperia TL can do so via the PC Companion, considering how there does not seem to have any OTA (Over The Air) option as at press time.

Sony Xperia TL caught on video showing off Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean features

As we’re sure Xperia owners are aware by now, the official Android Jelly Bean updates for your devices are scheduled for a February 2013 release, which given that it’s almost the end of the year, isn’t that long of a wait. Now the good news is that if you were wondering what sort of goodies you might be able to expect once you get the update, a video by SonyViet has been uploaded online in which the features of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean can be seen running on the Xperia TL handset, giving us a glimpse of what we might be able to expect in the new year. Some of these new features include a new home screen launcher, new wallpapers, new Album and Movie apps, and a ClearAudio+ feature which apparently will help with boosting audio quality, which also happens to be a feature in the upcoming Xperia V. The video itself is in Vietnamese so unless you speak and understand the language, hopefully the images in the video itself will be enough to give you an idea.

Sony Xperia TL review: the company’s second US flagship is much improved, but still imperfect

Sony Xperia TL review the company's second US flagship is muchimproved, but not quite perfect

As Sony’s second stab at the US mobile market, the Xperia TL arrives with a major corporate synergistic push: a 007 movie franchise tie-in. But an awkward distinction as the official Bond phone and a smattering of pre-loaded “Skyfall” multimedia content alone won’t drive consumer adoption; the specs and pricing will. Following in the footsteps of the company’s first stateside flagship, the Ion, this AT&T 4G LTE exclusive is priced aggressively at $99 on two-year contract, packing a 4.6-inch HD Reality display (1,280 x 720) powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz, 16GB of storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD), 1GB RAM, NFC, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an integrated 1,850mAh battery.

With Ice Cream Sandwich running the show and a planned upgrade to Jelly Bean in the works, it has all the makings of a current-gen high-end offering. So will the Xperia TL help Sony build much-needed buzz for its mobile division here in the states? Can a sub-$100 price tag effectively lure consumers away from the bigger, faster and flashier Android phones AT&T has to offer? Or is this mainly one for Sony loyalists? Find out after the break as we put the TL through its paces.

AT&T to offer Sony Xperia TL this coming November 2nd

When it comes to the world of Android-powered smartphones, you can say that the range of choices are too many to name. After all, with so many manufacturers in the market, it can be quite difficult to make a choice. Sony, ever since making the break away from their partnership with Ericsson, has come up with their fair share of more than decent devices in recent months, and their upcoming device, the Sony Xperia TL, is tipped for a release by AT&T later this November 2nd. AT&T has set the asking price of the Sony Xperia TL to be $99.99, where it will come with a new two-year agreement. The Sony Xperia TL will be featured in the upcoming 007 film, Skyfall, as part of Sony’s marketing campaign.

The Sony Xperia TL boasts of Sony’s best HD capture and viewing experiences, not to mention being able to share content across different devices courtesy of One-touch connectivity with near field communication (NFC).

For starters, the Sony Xperia TL will feature a 13-megapixel primary camera that is capable of capturing even the smallest of details to life. In addition, this high resolution fast capture camera will be able to enter the first shot from standby mode in a mere 1.5 seconds, which is enough to capture even some of life’s unexpected moments. Regardless of whether you are using the back or front facing cameras, either one are able to capture video in High Definition quality.

The Sony Xperia TL comes with a superb 4.6-inch HD Reality Display at 1280 x 720 resolution which is powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Should you want to watch content from your smartphone screen to the TV screen, the Xperia TL will be able to do so via HDMI with MHL support or wirelessly through DLNA. NFC technology will also allow the Xperia SmartTags for you to perform a range of customizable functions for different locations and situations. Any takers for this smartphone from Sony Mobile?

You Can Get James Bond’s Phone November 2nd

Okay, so Sony isn’t making a new Nexus phone, but it is making a phone that looks pretty sweet when you’re running around killing bad guys and seducing Russian models. The upcoming Xperia TL will be 007’s phone of choice in the upcoming film Skyfall. It looks like a solid piece of kit. More »

Sony Xperia TL for AT&T handson

It’s not unusual for a device to be sold under a couple of different names for the purposes of carrier branding, or to distinguish a global GSM model from its US bound LTE sibling. Sony seems to be trying for a record though, with the Xperia T adding a fourth rebranding. The company’s latest flagship is landing on AT&T here in the US as the Xperia TL. At an event today in NYC the carrier broke out the curved 4.6-inch LTE Android device and we took the opportunity to give it yet another chance to impress us, after falling short of “wow” it’s first few times around the block.

Back at IFA 2012, when we first got up close and personal with Sony’s latest flagship, we were left feeling rather unimpressed and things haven’t changed. The fit and finish of the TL just doesn’t live up to the big boy breeches of its high-end ilk. Yes, it feels good in the hand, owed in part to that matte plastic back and subtle arc S-like curve, but the materials feel cheap. Thankfully, that sentiment doesn’t spill over into its performance, as the 1.5GHz dual-core S4 powering the device does an admirable job keeping navigation brisk.

With a 720p HD Reality display powered by the outfit’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine, you’d expect superb readability from the handset, especially in the dim light of this event. Though colors on the panel are bright and viewing angles seem to hold up fairly well, we did take issue with its overall brightness. Even pumped up to max, the screen just seemed a bit too dark for our tastes.

As with all things carrier-branded, this one lands with a host of AT&T apps onboard alongside three of Sony’s own like Media, Album and Walkman. The build of Android on the device is still Ice Cream Sandwich with a light skin, but we were assured an upgrade to Jelly Bean is forthcoming and, given the company’s track record, we’re inclined to believe it. This official Bond Android phone’s targeted for a holiday season release, so sit tight if you want to go all in on this Xperia. Click on past the break for a brief video tour.

Sony Xperia TL product page goes live

It was just a couple of days ago when AT&T announced that they will be carrying a new Sony Xperia device known as the Sony Xperia TL (or the LT30at if you prefer to work with model numbers), and it did not take too long at all for a new product page to appear on Sony Mobile’s pages. The Sony Xperia TL does seem to be pretty much the same handset as the Sony Xperia T (LT30p), although it does have one powerful difference – it comes with LTE support and has a metallic rear cover, where the latter might look more beautiful, but it would also mean that it is more susceptible to scratches and the like. There is still no scheduled launch date from AT&T as at press time, so it might be some time before the Sony Xperia TL appears in the flesh. Just how much are you willing to fork out for the Xperia TL when it arrives?
