Sony Xperia T And Xperia V Get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update

Sony Xperia T And Xperia V Get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean UpdateSony Mobile seems to be on a roll this time around, having introduced the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for a bunch of its 2012 Xperia smartphones, starting off with the Xperia T and Xperia V. If you happen to own the Sony Xperia TX and are wondering just how come there is no Jelly Bean goodness for you, be patient – it is set to arrive sometime in March.

Thanks to Google’s “Project Butter”, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will definitely offer a far smoother user experience on the Android operating system than ever before, and you will be able to also find updated, more intuitive versions of Sony Media apps like Walkman, Album and Movies. There is also a revamped homescreen experience that makes it a snap to handle widgets, apps and shortcuts, and with the ability to shift around up to 7 desktop panes, you will be spoilt for choice as to which widget you would want to put in!

Sony Mobile has also decided to throw in a new search function within the application tray itself, making life a breeze for you to locate your local apps. Go on now, go try to download the update if you haven’t done so already!

Sony Xperia V Gets Jelly Bean Update

Sony Xperia V Gets Jelly Bean UpdateThe Sony Xperia V, otherwise known as the LT25i, has finally received an operating system update which will bump up the version number to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, or at least, that is what we are getting from sentiments on the ground. Just what kind of goodies does the latest Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update bring to the table? For starters, your firmware version will be upgraded to version 9.1.A.0.490, which is slightly different from firmware number 9.1.A.0.489 which begun to arrive on the Sony Xperia T last week.

Apparently, the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update affects a bunch of European countries that will include Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. Fret not if you happen to live in those countries, and your Xperia V looks dead as a doornail even when you have tried for the umpteenth time to manually search for the update. These things normally happen in stages, so be patient. Hopefully, it will also fix the sleep of death bug as well.

Sony Xperia V torn apart by the FCC for our education and amusement

Sony Xperia V torn apart by the FCC for our education and amusement

Like a sadistic Roman emperor, the boys at the FCC enjoy throwing unsuspecting smartphones to the lions and watching the result. This week, the unfortunate victim is Sony’s Xperia V, which has been roundly gutted for inspection. Eagle-eyed readers who browse our gallery might spot components from Qualcomm, Elpida and Samsung nestled amongst the circuits that make up its colorful insides. Given that government approval is the final hurdle on a device’s journey to retail, we’ll expect the Xperia V to arrive in time for the holidays — with Jelly bean promised to arrive a mere three months after.

Sony to start Xperia upgrades to Jelly Bean by mid-Q1, rules out all 2011 phones

Sony Xperia T review close-up

We’ve got mixed news for those who were wondering just where Sony’s Jelly Bean updates were headed. The good? Sony has narrowed down its upgrade schedule for the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V to the middle of 2013’s first quarter, or roughly February. Just about every other reasonably capable 2012 model is also getting an upgrade once Sony has narrowed down the timetable, ranging from the Xperia S through to the Xperia ion and Xperia go. Brace yourself for the dark side of the news, however: not a single 2011 Xperia phone will make the Jelly Bean leap, no matter how quick or recent it might be. The company was “not able to guarantee” the experience the devices would have with the newer OS, we’re told. While we know that some older phones would have been borderline at best, that cutoff won’t be pleasant for anyone whose Xperia Arc S is already out of the Android upgrade loop after less than a year.

Sony Xperia VL brings dash of toughened-up LTE to Japan

Sony Xperia VL brings dash of extrathin LTE to Japan

We were intrigued by Sony’s Xperia V back at IFA, but deals with specific carriers haven’t been very forthcoming. Japan’s KDDI is covering that gap by pledging to carry Sony’s mid-size Android 4.0 phone as the Xperia VL. Everything we know and (mostly) love about the dust- and water-resistant phone is intact, including that thin sensor-on-lens 720p display, the 13-megapixel camera, the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, NFC and LTE-based 4G. The one question remaining is a definitive release date: Sony will only promise an Xperia VL launch before the end of the year, although there’s talk at Impress Watch of a release on November 2nd for ¥30,000 ($381) after carrier discounts. Let’s hope for the company’s sake that other carriers sign up for the V and VL sooner rather than later.

Sony Xperia V pegged for December release by Swedish retailer

Sony took the wraps off the Xperia V at IFA 2012 but unfortunately they neglected as to when we might be able to expect it. Well if the handset was one that you had your eye on, a Swedish retailer has listed the device as available on the 3rd of December. Of course we’re not sure if the retailer has their facts right, plus it could also be a date for the European market as opposed to international or stateside availability. However assuming they’ve got their dates correct, we guess we have a rough timeframe of the Xperia V’s release.

For those who forgot, the Sony Xperia V is an IP57 certified device which means we can expect it to be both dust and water resistant. It sports a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 4.3” HD display, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera and LTE connectivity. It will also come with Android 4.0 ICS preinstalled but is expected to be bumped up to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at a later date.

Sony Xperia V gets Clear Phase feature

The Sony Xperia V was first announced to the world at the end of last month at IFA 2012, and while we await the device to arrive at our shores, here is a quick sneak peek at one of the features that the Xperia V will carry that has never been spotted before in prior Xperia devices, known as “Clear Phase”. This feature is highly visible in the user interface of the Xperia V, where it was seen carrying the following description: “Automatically adjust the sound quality of the internal speaker”.

In the past, Clear Phase technology did make an appearance on Vaio notebooks, so it makes perfect sense if Sony wants the rest of their device family (or at least, another member) to be on the receiving end of this particular function. No idea on whether Clear Phase will also make an appearance on the Sony Xperia T, but that would be just a matter of time (in a few weeks, in fact) when the smartphone arrives in the market. Just how much better do you think your audio experience on the Xperia V will be with Clear Phase enabled? I would say that the impact on its battery life is minimal.

Sony Xperia V packs new sensor-on-lens touchscreen tech, promises a ‘true direct touch experience’

Sony Xperia V packed new sensoronlens touchscreen tech, offers a 'true direct touch experience'

If you thought LG’s Optimus G and Nokia’s Lumia 920 had future touchscreen tech all sewn up, then be ready to welcome Sony’s own contribution. Its sensor-on-lens touchscreen will debut on the Xperia V, combining the sensor and lens component of a standard capacitive display, reducing the number of layers, glare and other interference. This improves both image quality and the screen’s responsiveness — Sony reckons the experience brings it in line with the aforementioned on- and in-cell touch display technology. During our brief hands-on at IFA, we found the Xperia V was certainly responsive enough, but perhaps some of that sensation can be attributed to the new screen, rather than the dual-core Snapdragon processor powering it. We’ll be sure to give it a thorough testing when our review model appears.

Early benchmark scores are in for the Sony Xperia T, TX and V

We’ve already benchmarked the Galaxy Note II and the ZTE Grand X IN at IFA, and as the week wraps up we’re circling back to test the mettle of other handsets announced here in Berlin. We ran mobile benchmarks on Sony’s new flagship Xperia T, the Xperia TX (the US version of the T) and the LTE-enabled Xperia V. All three devices pack dual-core Snapdragon S4 Krait processors clocked at 1.5GHz, and they’re currently running Ice Cream Sandwich — though a Jelly Bean update is reportedly on the way. Meet us past the break for a first look at how these smartphones stack up.
