Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition To Get Android 4.4.3 KitKat (Rumor)

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition To Get Android 4.4.3 KitKat (Rumor)In the past week, we did hear about how Sprint mentioned about Android 4.4.3 KitKat for the Nexus 5 smartphone, which leads to the question as to which particular device is going to be the next one to receive this particular mobile operating system update. There is every chance that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition is all up for it, at least according to the Bluetooth SIG.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition is a device that falls under the phablet category, sporting a 6.4” display, and it has been certified for some Android 4.4.3 KitKat action. For those who want definite proof on the Bluetooth SIG, it is not there, but rather, one would stumble upon a reference to the “Togari GPE”.

Togari happens to be the code name for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, while GPE stands for Google Play edition. As for the software version listed, it happens to be the KTU72.S1.3013, which is widely believed to represent Android 4.4.3 KitKat. Google Play edition smartphones rely on a stock Android OS, which makes it faster to update compared to unlocked and carrier models. After all, these updates are sent out straight from Google without having to go through any intermediary.

Android 4.4 KitKat Rolling Out To Xperia Z Ultra Owners

Android 4.4 KitKat Rolling Out To Xperia Z Ultra OwnersA couple of weeks ago, we reported that the Android 4.4 KitKat update would soon be making its way onto devices like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, and sure enough it has. According to a report from the XDA Developers forum, it seems that the update has begun to make its way to users in Hong Kong (model number C6833), meaning that we expect it might take a while before it reaches other parts of the world. Sony Xperia Z1 And Xperia Z Ultra Gets Software Update

Sony Xperia Z1 And Xperia Z Ultra Gets Software UpdateSony did make an announcement over its official Twitter account that they have lined up a brand new software update for the the Sony Xperia Z1 as well as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. This particular update will not be the Android 4.4 KitKat release that many would have been looking forward to, but I guess this is where the second law of updates apply – any update is better than no update at all, right? After all, this particular update from Sony would arrive with a bunch of new features that will hopefully be able to make a positive impact and difference to the end user.

WiFi-Only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Officially Announced For Japan

WiFi Only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Officially Announced For JapanAfter being rumored, spotted on Sony’s website, and making its way past the FCC, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra WiFi-only version has been officially announced for Japan. As it stands it appears that the device is only available for Japan at the moment and will be priced at around $495 and will be released on the 24th of January. However availability of the device for other regions has yet to be announced, although given that devices that are usually Japan-exclusives typically remain that way for the foreseeable future, but we suppose you could always get one imported if that’s a device you truly wouldn’t mind getting your hands on. WiFi-only Xperia Z Ultra Seemingly Confirmed On Sony’s Website

WiFi only Xperia Z Ultra Seemingly Confirmed On Sonys WebsiteA little over a week ago, we reported that Sony might be working on a WiFi-only version of its Sony Xperia Z Ultra device. Like we said at that time, considering that the Xperia Z Ultra came with a whopping 6.44” display, some might feel more comfortable using it as a tablet-ish sort of device rather than a smartphone, so by taking out cellular capabilities, it would transform the device into either a gigantic media player or a small and portable tablet, not to mention the lack of cellular probably saves a fair bit of battery life too. Well the good news is that if you thought along those lines as well, you’d be in luck because it seems that the device might have inadvertently been confirmed by Sony on their website.

The WiFi-only Xperia Z Ultra device has a model number SGP412, and it was recently that Sony added drivers for two new Xperia Z Ultra variants on its website, one of them for a certain SGP412, which more or less confirms the device’s existence. The other drive is for a Xperia Z Ultra whose model number is SOL24 which is essentially a carrier variant in Japan. However since this can hardly be thought of as an official announcement, there still remains the possibility that we could be wrong, but with MWC 2014 around the corner, hopefully we will learn more then. In the meantime what are your thoughts on using the Xperia Z Ultra as a media-only device or a tablet?

WiFi-only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Could Be In The Works

WiFi only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Could Be In The WorksBack in 2013, Sony launched the Xperia Z Ultra, a smartphone that defied the conventions of how big a smartphone should be, especially since it launched with a whopping 6.44” display, which at that time made it the biggest smartphone around (it has since been overtaken by the Hisense X1 which comes with a 6.8” display). Given the device’s size, it would make for a pretty nifty tablet as well, wouldn’t it? Granted it is smaller than 7” tablets like the Nexus 7, but that also means that it is more portable as we have seen instances of people managing to slip the Xperia Z Ultra into their pockets, not something you see often when it comes to tablets.

This is why it is not a complete surprise to learn that Sony could be looking to release a media version of the Xperia Z Ultra, which is basically the same device minus any radio capabilities. This is thanks to AnTuTu benchmarks which shows off the device’s Snapdragon 800 processor without radios on board. Of course this does not confirm anything but the rumors of a WiFi-only version of the device has been floating around for a while now, and perhaps Sony might come forward with an announcement of sorts during MWC 2014 which is expected to take place next month. In the meantime what do you guys think? Would a $350 WiFi-only version of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra be of any interest to you?

Sony Launches New Xperia Z Ultra Case For Its ‘Lens Style’ Cameras

Sony Launches New Xperia Z Ultra Case For Its Lens Style Cameras

Earlier this year Sony released their first “lens style cameras.” The DSC QX100 and DSC QX10 are basically stand-alone cameras that resemble lenses, they can also be mounted on a smartphone using the mount that’s built-in to it so that the smartphone can be used as a remote control and a viewfinder. They work with Android and iOS devices and reportedly even BlackBerrys. Sony also launched the Xperia Z Ultra smartphone this year which was praised for its impressive specifications. As it turns out, the Z Ultra is so large that the standard mount on Sony’s lense style cameras doesn’t suffice. The company fixes this problem with a new case for the Xperia Z Ultra.

The camera attachment case for Xperia Z Ultra is going to be launched in January, its actually quite similar to the one Sony has unveiled for Xperia Z and Xperia Z1. Using this custom case, Xperia Z Ultra owners can easily mount the QX10 and QX100 cameras, and the case will be available in both black and white so they can coordinate colors of the smartphone, the camera and the case. Sony has announced the case for Hong Kong right now where it will be sold for around $30. The company is yet to reveal when this case will be made available in other markets. Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Gets Android 4.4.2 Update To Fix Uninstall Bug

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Gets Android 4.4.2 Update To Fix Uninstall BugEarlier we had reported that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition was being plagued by a rather odd bug that would prevent the user from uninstalling apps. App uninstallation is usually a straightforward and painless process which can be accomplished by either dragging the app to the trash bin icon, or head on over to the Google Play store and uninstall it from there. Well the good news is that if you are a Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition owner, you might want to keep an eye out for the Android 4.4.2 update as that update will supposedly squash that particular bug on the device.

It is unclear as to what might have caused the bug, but some have speculated that a rush job to get the handset out there could have been a factor. In any case the update is said to weigh in at around 448MB and apart from solving that issue, the update will also introduce a host of new features and changes that are associated with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, so either way it is an update worth getting your hands on. The update has already been issued to the likes of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play Edition devices. If you have not received the update, fret not as chances are it is being rolled out in batches, so be patient and we’re sure it won’t be long before it is your turn.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Bug Prevents App From Being Uninstalled

According to a smattering of reports we’ve been hearing, it would seem as though the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition is being plagued by a particularly nasty bug that does not seem to allow the user to uninstall apps. Uninstalling or removing an app from a phone is usually a straightforward and painless process, either by dragging it to the trash in the app drawer, or by loading up Google Play and choosing to uninstall it from there. Unfortunately this bug does not allow the user to do either, as you can see in the video above. (more…)
