Sony Xperia Z Gets New Firmware Update

Sony Xperia Z Gets New Firmware UpdateFolks living in Japan and who are rocking out to the Sony Xperia Z, otherwise known by its model number SO-02E, listen up! There is a new firmware update that has been made available for this particular smartphone, where it carries the version number 10.1.D.0.333. Just what kind of goodies will this new firmware bring to the table? Well, a couple of main features are headed your way to the NTT DoCoMo handset, with the first of them being this – it will fix the Sleep of Death issue that has been the bane of some Xperia Z handset owners, while the second would be the ability to adds the ‘White balance’ display calibration setting which was originally found in the Xperia ZL.

I guess this is a glimpse of what one can expect in the future, especially for the Sony Xperia Z models that are bound for the Western world, where it will carry the model number C660X instead. Perhaps in the next firmware update cycle, things in the west for the Sony Xperia Z will shape up accordingly to match the advancements and changes enjoyed by those living in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Sony Xperia Z Falls Victim To Lockscreen Flaw

Nothing is “unbreakable” in the world of technology, and the companies behind their range of products know it. The thing is, you can only do so much, and sometimes, the flaws were not realized until someone out there with the relevant amount of smarts figure things out, only to record an exploit of it while gaining their 15 minutes of fame. Well, iPhone users have had to go through the indignation of reverting to iOS 6.1.1 after the recent iOS 6.1.3 update introduced a passcode flaw in both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. Late last year, there was an exploit discovered in Samsung devices that ran on Exynos 4210 and Exynos 4412 processors, which were eventually fixed by a firmware update. Well, it seems that the Sony Xperia Z would be the latest device to fall under the curse of the lockscreen flaw.

Sure, it is protected against water and dust, but it does jack to those who want to steal some of your personal information on the handset. As demonstrated in the video above, Scott Reed, a Sony Xperia Z owner, managed to figure out a method to bypass the lockscreen on your beloved Xperia Z. Hopefully Sony will be able to roll out a patch, and time is of the essence! Does this mean the random shutdown issues will also be fixed?

Sony Xperia Z Owners Reporting Random Shutdowns, Sony Claims Fix Will Be In Next Update

Sony Xperia Z Owners Reporting Random Shutdowns, Sony Claims Fix Will Be In Next UpdateIf you were planning on getting the Sony Xperia Z, you might want to hold off on your purchase just yet. According to several reports (1,2), there are Xperia Z owners who are complaining that their phones are randomly shutting down. This wouldn’t be such a big deal if the phones could be turned on again. Yikes! So far no one has been able to find a workaround or figure out what the problem is. Some have reported success in rebooting their phones by doing a hard reset (hold power + vol up), but it seems that it does not necessarily work for everyone. We did not encounter such problems during our review of the Sony Xperia Z, so it could be an isolated incident or completely random. In the meantime Sony has responded to the complaints and claimed to have come up with a fix for these random shutdowns. The fix is expected to make its way into the phone’s next update, so keep an eye out for that.

Sony Announces Mid-Range Xperia SP and Low-End Xperia L

Sony fleshed out its revamped smartphone lineup on Monday, announcing two new handsets: the Xperia SP and the Xperia L. The pair sits clearly downmarket of Sony’s flagship Xperia Z, which was launched back at the Consumer Electronics Show in …

Sony Xperia Z Gets Display From Two Suppliers?

Sony Xperia Z Gets Display From Two Suppliers? In a move that is most probably playing it safe, remembering the adage to not put all of one’s eggs in a single basket, Sony Mobile must have approached a couple of suppliers to churn out displays for their current flagship device, the Sony Xperia Z, which is also water resistant to a certain extent, and that means it will play nice even when your fingers are wet. The two suppliers in question are JDC (Japan Display Central, part of Japan Display Inc) and Sharp, where both of them hail from Japan.

Of course, this means that one Xperia Z with a display from JDC does not necessarily mean it is better than the Sharp-equipped Xperia Z, or is it? The folks over at XDA Developers did run a poll in order to find out just which of the two displays is the superior one, and most of them voted for Sharp compared to just 20% being on JDC’s camp. Of course, there is nothing scientific about this poll, and until someone actually places both devices side by side to make a comparison, the entire shebang is still up for debate. Which of the two do you think has the better smartphone?

The Engadget Interview: Sony product marketing manager Stephen Sneeden at MWC 2013

The Engadget Interview Sony product marketing manager Stephen Sneeden at MWC 2013

After wowing us at CES with the Xperia Z, Sony enticed us at Mobile World Congress with the Xperia Tablet Z. Both devices combine top-notch specs with beautiful industrial design — pure rectangular forms with a mirror-like finish packaged in thin, light and water-resistant shells. We sat down with product marketing manager Stephen Sneeden in Barcelona to talk about these iconic products. We discussed the “omni-balance” design and the common user experience shared by both devices, which was spearheaded when Kuni Suzuki became Sony Mobile’s president and CEO. He explained that some of these design elements will likely be incorporated into future (non-mobile) products and that the both the Xperia Z and Tablet Z are premium, aspirational devices which will become reference points for more affordable models. We then chatted about the Tablet Z’s specs, in particular its impressive thickness (6.9mm / 0.27 inches) and best-in-class weight (495g / 0.99lbs). Mr. Sneeden mentioned the TV SideView app, an electronic programming guide with voice activation that’s available from the Play Store and takes advantage of the Tablet Z’s built-in IR blaster — he also pointed out that Sony’s Music Unlimited and Walkman Player apps will be fully integrated by summer. We touched upon a few other topics, including the Xperia Play and PlayStation Certified program for phones. Check out the full video interview after the break.

Sony Xperia Z Manual Available

Sony Xperia Z Manual Available So, you have been in two minds as to whether you would want to pick up the Sony Xperia Z or not. Well, I know that not all reading material is worth going through, and manuals themselves tend to make for extremely dry reading material, which is why the Sony Xperia Z user manual that has appeared online should appeal only to an extremely small segment of the tech community.

The Sony Xperia Z smartphone, which will be a somewhat pseudo-rugged model considering how it is dust-proof and water resistant, has already made an appearance in select markets, although we do expect to see the Sony Xperia Z “explode” across different countries from tomorrow onwards. Folks who want to know more about the Sony Xperia Z inside out can always check out the user guide, which comes in both C6602 (HSPA+) and C6603 (LTE) flavors, weighing in at 131 virtual pages. Of course, the English manual should be the most popular model, but for those who want a different language to check up on the Sony Xperia Z, you can give this link a go.

Sony Xperia Z Rooted Before Official Release

Sony Xperia Z Rooted Before Official ReleaseThe Sony Xperia Z has yet to roll out officially in most countries, but apparently, it has been rooted before it was officially rolled out. DoomLord of XDA-Devs fame has relied on the CF-Auto-Root toolkit from the Nexus 4 rooting odyssey in order to achieve this. Using a slight modification on the Nexus 4 root tool, the Sony Xperia Z will be available to be free for modding as well as hacking according to your heart’s desire, and so far, it seems that Sony’s device is more than ready to be tinkered with even further.

We also have word that Sony remains reluctant to pose too many restrictions on its Android-powered smartphones, since it will actually encourage developers to perform hacks and mods. What do you think of the Sony Xperia Z’s root before its release? Will we also see the same happen to other smartphones in the market?

Xperia Z Is All Right With A Dunk In The Porcelain Throne

Just how tough is the Sony Xperia Z? Well, this is most probably the most tough flagship smartphone to date from all the other manufacturers out there, whether we are talking about the Android, iOS or Windows Phone 8 platforms. After all, in the video that you see above, it showed just how the Xperia Z managed to continue working even though it had dropped into the toilet bowl – or rather, purposely soaked in there for a moment.

Well, I am not quite sure about you, but I have known some folks who have dropped their handsets into the toilet bowl, and sometimes, it was after they had, erm, done their business in it, so to speak, which would mean the handset is doubly condemned. Anyways just to sidetrack for a while, what business does a smartphone have in the toilet? The Xperia Z’s water resistant feature definitely worked as demonstrated in the video above, but you would best get a bottle of Dettol to disinfect the handset’s exterior before speaking into its mouthpiece afterwards. Would this video convince you to pick up the Xperia Z?
