Sony Xperia Z1s Now Available Via T-Mobile

xperia-z1s-tmobileAt CES 2014, we had a rather comprehensive hands-on experience with the Sony Xperia Z1s that was headed in the direction of T-Mobile, and we are more than glad to announce that this particular smartphone is finally available exclusively on the mobile carrier. Those who are interested in picking up this smartphone will be able to do so for $0 down, which should be a relief to folks who are on the lookout for a new handset and yet are pretty tight on their budget. Apart from that, you will have to agree to a 24 equal monthly device payment plan of $222 with T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Plan.

This Week On The TechCrunch Droidcast: The Google Play Edition Moto G Arrives While Our Host Departs

    droidcast-banner-19

We’re freshly back from CES, so visions of new Android-powered devices swirl in our heads. While in Vegas we subjected the new Z1S to the rigorous water salad test, so we talk about that, the new HP Android “voice tablets,” and the logic and value of Google’s Play Edition device program to solve the mystery of the Play Edition Moto G.

There’s also some bittersweet news, as Droidcast host supreme Chris Velazco formally announces his departure – he’s moving on from TechCrunch to Engadget, where he’ll probably be even more engaged with all things Android and mobile. He’ll be back for frequent visits, so Droidcast listeners needn’t worry, but expect a lot more self-indulgent monologuing from yours truly, along with a more varied lineup of guests.

We invite you to enjoy weekly Android podcasts every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern and 12:30 p.m. Pacific (generally speaking), in addition to our weekly Gadgets podcast at 3 p.m. Eastern and noon Pacific on Fridays. Subscribe to the TechCrunch Droidcast in iTunes, too, if that’s your fancy.

Sony Xperia Z1S Review: Big Camera In a Sleek Package

Sony Xperia Z1S Review: Big Camera In a Sleek Package

Sony finally got one mostly right when it came to tablets last year, but the Japanese company has struggled more with phones. The Xperia Z is the closest thing it’s had to a success, and ultimately, it left us wanting more. So, we were excited when we first saw the Xperia Z1S, which on paper looked like a champion. A 20.7MP camera without a bulbous backside? Tell us more…

Sony Xperia Z1S: This Thing Could Be Really, Really Good

Sony Xperia Z1S: This Thing Could Be Really, Really Good

In what is certainly the most enticing phone we’ve seen at CES thus far, Sony’s Xperia Z1S is heading to the U.S. as a T-Mobile exclusive, and it looks like an absolute powerhouse (as does its little buddy, for those who like smaller phones). Where to begin?

    Sony Xperia Z1S Image Leaked

Sony Xperia Z1S Image LeakedWhen leaks happen of a particular device, it goes to show just one thing – that said device which was leaked would most probably be released, and not too long afterwards, of course. @evleaks has come up with yet another look of what could very well be revealed at CES this year, which is the Sony Xperia Z1S. This particular smartphone is also known as the Xperia Z1 mini in other circles, where it happens to be the compact version of its flagship device, which is the Sony Xperia Z1.

So far, official images of the Sony Xperia Z1S as well as camera samples, live photos and user interface screenshots have all been spotted. Heck, it has even gotten the positive nod of approval from the folks over at the FCC, which means it is about to hit the market really, really soon. Its most recent official release to the masses happened to be the one in the Land of the Rising Sun, where it was known as the Xperia Z1F. Well, @evleaks has shown off the official T-Mobile render, so no prizes for guessing just which mobile carrier it will arrive on. Needless to say, we await with bated breath on the official hardware specifications when the embargo breaks.

Sony Xperia Z1s Goes Through The FCC

Sony Xperia Z1s Goes Through The FCCThe Sony Xperia Z1s has been spotted in the wild before, where some folks have also called it the Xperia Z1 mini. Apparently, the Sony Xperia Z1s has made its rounds through Postel, which happens to be the wireless authority in the nation of Indonesia. Well, we are glad to say that the Sony Xperia Z1s has finally made its way over to the US, thanks to some documents from the FCC which reveal a diagram of the device, where from there, we have also garnered information about the size of its footprint – measuring 129mm x 64.9mm.

As for the software version of the Sony Xperia Z1s, it has been listed as 14.2.A.0.144, which should point to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (apparently, when it came to the Xperia Z Ultra, 14.2.A.0.290 happened to be the listing which was equivalent of the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update). For those who are not in the know, the Sony Xperia Z1s happens to be a smaller version of the Z1 flagship, where it comes equipped with a 4.3″ 720p display, running on a Snapdragon 800 chipset, sporting a 20.7-megapixel camera alongside a water-resistant design. Whispers on the street have it that the Sony Xperia Z1s will arrive sometime in the first quarter of next year, sporting a $590 price point. [FCC Page]

Leaked Photo Suggests Sony Xperia Z1s Price

Leaked Photo Suggests Sony Xperia Z1s PriceWe have seen the Sony Xperia Z1s have its photos leaked before, but word on pricing or availability remains a mystery, at least until now where a recent batch of photos have made their way onto the internet, and one of them (pictured above), appears to have the pricing of the device on it, giving us an idea of what we might be able to expect. As you can see in the image above, it shows that the Xperia Z1s could potentially come with a price tag of 3,600 Yuan, which when converted is about $590, which seems about right.

According to the specifications, which we can only imagine is based on the Xperia Z1 f which was a Japan exclusive (the Xperia Z1s is said to be the international model), we are looking at a 4.3” 720p HD display, a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, a 20.7MP camera, and will run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, although we’re not sure if it will see an update to Android 4.4 KitKat come Q1 2014, which at the moment is the device’s rumored launch date. In any case what do you guys think? Is $590 a fair price to ask for the Sony Xperia Z1s?

Sony Xperia Z1S Poses Beside Xperia Z1 In Leaked Picture

Sony Xperia Z1S Poses Beside Xperia Z1 In Leaked Picture

The Sony Xperia Z1S has been flirting with us for quite some time now, but it is still not known when this smartphone is going to be announced. It is believed to be the international variant of the Xperia Z1 f which Sony launched in Japan last month. The Xperia Z1 f is basically a “mini” variant of the Xperia Z1, but unlike most “mini” variants, the Z1 f doesn’t compromise a lot on specifications. After making a brief appearance on Sony’s website, the Xperia Z1S is now seen in a new leaked picture posing beside the Xperia Z1.

While Sony has pulled the listing from its website, it is believed that the Xperia Z1S is going to have specifications similar to the Z1 f. The latter touts a 4.3 inch QHD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quadcore processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB onboard storage, 2 megapixel front and a 20 megapixel rear camera. A 2,300mAh battery is onboard as well. It is also expected to be dust and waterproof. As per the most recent rumor, Sony might officially announce the Xperia Z1S on November 26th, but the company is yet to confirm this date. It is not known right now if any carriers in the U.S. will offer this device, and if they do, how much will they charge for it. [Image via Digi-Wo]

Sony Xperia Z1S Camera Sample Leaked

Sony Xperia Z1S Camera Sample LeakedSo, we have heard that there was a device from Sony which was known as the Sony Xperia Z1S that appeared over on Sony’s site for but a moment recently. This particular “boo boo” was taken down not too long after it was discovered, which has already led to many folks taking a stab at Sony making an official announcement concerning the Sony Xperia Z1S. Seriously, very little is known about this smartphone, but it does seem that we might have something a little bit more to chew on this time around, and that would be a leaked image that comes with .EXIF data which points to a Sony D5503 device, where some sources have already stepped forward to claim that this is very well the Xperia Z1S that comes under Sony’s new flagship numbering scheme.

According to the .EXIF data, it does point to a 14.2.A.0.204 firmware version, which so happens to be based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, although that too, has yet to be confirmed. What do you think of the Sony Xperia Z1S, and do you think that this will continue in the waterproof vein of its predecessor? Only time will tell, which is why we do hope for an official announcement sooner rather than later.

Sony Xperia Z1s Spotted On Sony’s Global Website

Sony Xperia Z1s Spotted On Sonys Global Website

Last month, Sony unveiled its Xperia Z1 f in Japan, which is a smaller version of their Xperia Z1 that features much of the hardware included in that device. This is certainly a step in the right direction to what consumer electronics companies should be doing with their “mini” versions of popular devices, instead of throwing in specifications that aren’t quite up to par with the original device. The Xperia Z1 f may have just popped up yet again, this time being called the Xperia Z1s. (more…)
