Sony unveiled the successor to its flagship Android tablet at Mobile World Congress back in February. Today the company announced that Xperia Z2 tablet’s Wi-Fi variant is now available for pre-sale. It is offered in both 16GB and 32GB flavors for $499.99 and $599.99 through the online Sony Store. Participating Sony Stores will starting selling the tablet from May 4th. White color option is only offered in 32GB, black is available in both 16GB and 32GB.

To compliment the tablet Sony is also going to offer a variety of accessories for purchase. These include a Bluetooth speaker with magnetic charging dock, Bluetooth keyboard with NFC, a protective case and desk stand as well as a noise cancelling headset. Some of these accessories will be available on May 4th, others will become available “at a later date.”

All customers will receive a 30-day free trial of Sony’s Music Unlimited service. They will also get six popular movies from Sony Pictures, including Oscar-winning hits Captain Phillips and American Hustle. Eight PlayStation Mobile games are included as well.

The Xperia Z2 tablet has impressive specifications. This waterproof tablet has a 10.1-inch Full HD display, S-Force front Surround audio with Clear Audio+, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3Ghz quadcore processor with 3GB of RAM, 8 megapixel rear camera with Exmor RS image sensor as well as a 6,000 mAh battery.

We’re sure some of our readers have heard that the Sony Xperia Z2 is currently facing delays. The good news is that it looks like maybe Sony might have figured out a way to deal with their production issues or whatever it is that is causing the delay because according to reports, Sony has since reopened pre-orders for the handset across its European websites.

This includes countries like the UK, France, Spain, and Poland where customers can go ahead and place their pre-orders. For our European readers, it seems that whatever pre-order bonuses that Sony has offered before is still in effect, so for example if you were to pre-order the handset in the UK, you can look forward to getting the Sony SRS-BTX300 NFC speakers for free.

Sony has also stated that they are planning to begin delivery of the SIM free models in the beginning of May, which is an improvement over the previous report which suggested that it could be delayed until the end of May. However these are the SIM free models meaning that they’re not tied to any carrier, so if you were hoping for subsidies from particular carriers, you’d have to wait for those carriers to make their own announcements.

While there’s no guarantee, it has been speculated that there is also a chance that other retailers such as Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U, Vodafone, and EE to start offering the phone starting from next week.

The goal of water-resistant devices is to seal the device up completely to prevent water from seeping into any holes, gaps, or ports that could damage the internals. While Sony is advertising the Xperia Z2 to have water-resistant capabilities, it seems that due to manufacturing defects, perhaps the Xperia Z2 might not be as water-resistant as it could be.

According to a report from Singapore, Xperia Z2 owners have discovered that there is a gap at the top right hand corner of their device (pictured above). It might not be noticeable in darker colors of the phone, but on the white model it is pretty obvious. These customers have since voiced concerns that this could allow water to seep in and damage the phone’s internal components. (more…)

Similar to what Jay-Z did with Samsung, it seems that Sony wants to do something similar as well, which is to release a music album in conjunction with the release of a handset. In this case Sony plans to use the upcoming Xperia Z2 and will be releasing a new Michael Jackson album titled “XSCAPE” together with it.

Yes, we are well aware that the King of Pop is no longer with us, so XSCAPE isn’t technically new material, but will instead feature unreleased material which we guess did not make it to the studio albums, which in turn will no doubt make it an album that fans and collectors will want to get their hands on. If you’re planning on getting your hands on the brand new Sony Xperia Z2 when it is released (it has been reportedly delayed), you might be interested to learn that the handset has been rooted and has even received ClockworkMod-based Recovery even before the handset has been officially released!

The root is courtesy of XDA’s DooMLorD who has in the past been pretty instrumental when it comes to various mods and tweaks related to Sony’s Xperia handsets. The Touch Recovery is said to be based on ClockwokMod version 6.0.4.6 and will require users to unlock the bootloaders of their phones. (more…)
