Sony Xperia Z And Xperia ZL Gets New Firmware Updates

Sony Xperia Z And Xperia ZL Gets New Firmware Updates The two flagship smartphones from the folks over at Sony Mobile would be the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, and it is rather encouraging to see that Sony intends to make sure that the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL will be able to last as long as possible in the market without being too outdated – at least in terms of its software (you can’t do much about the hardware once the device has been released to the masses). New firmware updates for both devices will deliver similar improvements, including signal and touch sensitivity and its fair share of bug fixes, although you should take note that it has nothing to do with an operating system upgrade, so do expect it to remain under the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean domain for now.

While no official change log is available concerning the firmware updates for both devices, some users have claimed that the boot animation is smoother than before, while RAM management is more efficient. Other than that, 3G signal strength has improved, with a faster sleep and wake time among others. Of course, some of these listed are subjective and depends on your mobile carrier as well as signal strength, so do take it with a pinch of salt. You can get these updates via over-the-air or through the Sony PC companion. [Xperia ZL Firmware Update Link and Xperia Z Firmware Update Link]

CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightlies For Xperia Z And ZL

CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightlies For Xperia Z And ZLYou can more or less observe that different hardware manufacturers have varying levels of “friendliness” when it comes to implementing third party code, and Sony is one such company who seem to be friendlier than normal, as Sony has also backed AOSP (Android Open Source Projects in full) efforts even when they were the ones who had to shoulder majority of the responsibilities.

Hence, it does not come across as a surprise to us to hear that the Sony Xperia Z as well as Xperia ZL are the more recently introduced smartphones from the company to be on the receiving end of nightly CyanogenMod 10.1 builds. Of course, it goes without saying that nightly builds of custom OS code tend to be risky since you can never quite tell whether Murphy is going to strike or not, but for folks who lack the patience for Sony to officially roll out a safe Android 4.2 Jelly Bean release, this is an alternative for you to fall back upon. Check out our Sony Xperia Z review here.

Sony Xperia ZL Holds Guinness World Record

Sony Xperia ZL Holds Guinness World RecordThere can only be one, according to the law of the immortals in The Highlander, and I suppose the same holds true when it comes to world record holders. Very rarely do you see two or more persons or objects hold the same world record simultaneously, but I don’t think that anyone is going to outdo Sony Mobile’s Sony Xperia ZL anytime soon. Basically, the Sony Xperia ZL managed to pick up the Guinness World Record for “the largest animated mobile phone mosaic.”

Sony Mobile’s effort of getting together at least 196 smartphones (of the Sony Xperia ZL variety, of course) to construct a wall which measures 1.90m x 1.03m, sporting a surface area of 1.95 square meters, which was displayed for all and sundry to view in Barcelona at the MWC 2013 that happened in February this year. Right now, the Sony Xperia ZL is already available in select European markets, and should arrive Stateside soon, where it will take place in the pantheon of high end smartphones without missing a beat.

Sony Xperia ZL Ships

Sony Xperia ZL ShipsTalk about being quick to the fore – we were just mentioning about how the Sony Xperia ZL is up and available for pre-order yesterday, and here we are slightly more than 24 hours later, that the pre-order status of the Sony Xperia ZL in the US has just been transformed to “shipping” – at least for the black version if that is the shade you are gunning for. The Sony Xperia ZL, also known as the C650X if you are a sucker for model numbers, carries the estimated release date of April 8th if you want the white and red variants.

The black version of the LTE SKU (C6506) is in stock for $759.99 a pop, and there does not seem to be any HSPA+ version (C6502) of the Sony Xperia ZL listed just yet as a pre-order, so perhaps a little bit more patience on your side is required. Come on now, how many of you out there cannot wait to lay your hands on the spanking new Sony Xperia ZL smartphone? It sure as heck is a looker if you ask me.

Sony Xperia ZL Now Up For Pre-Order In The US

Sony Xperia ZL Now Up For Pre Order In The USDuring CES, Sony announced the Xperia Z, their flagship phone for 2013. However that was not the only phone Sony had up their sleeves. No sir, they also had the Xperia ZL as part of their announcement, and while for the most part the Xperia ZL shares the same specs as the Xperia Z, it is packed into a less fancy body, although that does have its pros depending on how you look at it. Either way if you prefer the Xperia ZL’s build to the Xperia Z, Sony has announced that the device will be up for pre-order via Sony’s website and will be priced at a whopping $720.

For those who want the 4G version, expect to pay $760. This is obviously unlocked and off-contract, so if you’d rather not fork out so much money, a recent FCC sighting has pegged the device as scheduled to arrive on AT&T, although it’s now a question of when. In terms of specs, for those who forgot, the Xperia ZL will come with a 5” Full HD display powered by Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2. It will feature a 13MP rear-facing EXMOR RS camera, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz, and will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preinstalled. [Press release]

Sony Xperia ZL Gets New Firmware

Sony Xperia ZL Gets New FirmwareWe do know that the retail versions of the Sony Xperia Z (C660X) and Sony Xperia ZL (C650X) around the world arrived with firmware version 10.1.A.1.350 underneath the hood, where that would also mean Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and the 3.4 kernel in tow. Well, for those who are rocking to the Sony Xperia ZL, here is a little bit of good news to perk up your day – it seems that there is a new firmware update available for your smartphone, although you would need to reside in a Dilbert-friendly country, Estonia, as well as Russia.

Firmware version 10.1.A.1.434 is said to still be based on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and from comments shared by folks who have given the new firmware update a go, there does not seem to be any notable improvements introduced compared to its predecessor. This particular version has yet to receive certification on the PTCRB website to date, but I guess if you happen to own the Xperia ZL and live in either one of the two mentioned countries, keeping your device updated is always better than nothing.
