Sony XPERIA ZL European Launch In April

Sony XPERIA ZL European Launch In April

We’ve had a good time with the Sony XPERIA Z at CES, but most people forget that there are other handsets from Sony coming up. For instance, the Sony XPERIA ZL is said to be launching in a couple of months in Europe, and we will probably have to wait for carrier deals until this is announced in the USA. So far, we know that one of the variants works on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, but LTE support (AT&T, Verizon) may need a little more time.

If you are not familiar with the XPERIA ZL, it’s a 5″ Android phone that features a 1080p display (443 pixels per inch or PPI) and excellent color rendering specs. It is driven by a Sony BRAVIA video processor which takes care of image filtering and color corrections. To fight against glare, Sony has made sure that there is no air gap, a technique commonly used in high-end displays. (more…)

my Xperia service slated for initial launch this week, promises to protect your phone

Sony has confirmed my Xperia, a service that promises to help locate lost handsets and protect the files contained on them via a couple different options. The security service – which will be launched in beta – will be rolled out in phases, starting with the Nordics. In the second quarter of the year, my Xperia will then be released for Sony smartphone owners globally.

The service will work similar to third-party phone locating/wiping services that are available for smartphone owners. Users will be able to use it by turning on the service’s app on their phone, then signing in with their Google ID to the my Xperia website. From the account, a user can then see where their smartphone is on a map, such as at the gym where it was forgotten.

If the phone has been forgotten in a location where it isn’t at risk of theft, the user can send an alert to the phone via the service that will cause its display to turn on and it to make noise regardless of its volume status. Likewise, a message can be sent remotely to the phone that has information on how to contact the owner so that it can be returned.

Of course, sometimes you haven’t lost access to your phone because it was misplaced, but rather because someone swiped it while you weren’t paying attention. In this case, my Xperia can be used to wipe both the smartphone’s internal memory and its SD card if one is present, eliminating the risk of the data – whether it is unflattering pictures or sensitive business files – getting into the wrong hands.

Not everyone will be able to take part in the initial launch; those lucky few who can will find out via a notification. The service will first be available to those using handsets running Android Ice Cream Sandwich, with the Xperia Acro S being first in line. More devices will be added “over the coming weeks.”

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony piqued its fair share of interest when it trademarked the My Xperia name for an online service — what could it do in the cloud that it hadn’t already done? Tracking lost devices, it seems. The now-official My Xperia service trial gives Sony phone owners the equivalent to a recovery tool like Find My iPhone or the early form of HTCSense.com, letting them pinpoint a missing Xperia and ping it, lock it down or wipe at least some of its data. Be ready for a very gradual launch, however. The very first wave of tests involves just Xperia acro S users in Nordic countries, and the trial will expand only to 2012 smartphones in the region that are still running Android 4.0. Those of us further abroad will have to wait for the eventual worldwide expansion if we want to easily find that Xperia S buried between the couch seats.

[Hands-On] 10.1″ Xperia Tablet Z – the world’s slimmest tablet

“This is the Xperia Tablet Z SO-03E. It’s the world’s slimmest tablet, and Japan’s lightest, too. Until now, tablets have been heavy and thick, so they end up getting left at home. But this one’s light and slim enough to carry in a bag, without it feeling like a heavy load.”
“For this tablet, we’ve used what’s called the Omni Balance Design. This looks very sleek, because it eliminates all unnecessary features.”

By popular demand, Sony releases Jelly Bean alpha build for Xperia T

By popular demand, Sony releases Jelly Bean alpha build for Xperia T

Because the first time proved to be such a charm for Android developers, Sony’s once again offering Xperia owners an official alpha ROM. And this time, it’s of the Jelly Bean variety. But before you rush to the source and flash your cares away, there are a few caveats we need to cover. For starters, the price of entry to this Android 4.1 test run is an unlocked Xperia T. Not the TX, not the V, not the S, so don’t even try it. You’ll also have to sign away your legal right (via the company’s unlock utility) to whine and demand compensation should your handset brick in the process. Once those hurdles have been cleared, you’re almost home free to flash — so long as you don’t mind an unfinished UI, non-functioning radios for voice, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC, in addition to a complete lack of Gapps. Oh, and did we mention your unlocked T won’t be privy to the official Jelly Bean update once it hits? Yeah, there’s that too. Basically, you shouldn’t look to this for a daily driver. In fact, it’s probably best to leave this one to the big boys.
