Sony Xperia J gets a pre-unveiling hands-on, suggests we’ll get exactly what we pay for

Sony Xperia J gets a preunveiling handson, suggests we'll get exactly what we pay for

Giving Sony phones hands-on time before they’re even announced must be in vogue this year. Hot on the heels of its look at what’s now called the Xperia T, Mobile-review has given the entry-level Xperia J a full inspection without even the hint of a press release in sight. The very, very early review makes clear that cost-cutting is the rule of the day: a 2010-era Snapdragon chip, 512MB of RAM and a fairly low-grade 4-inch LCD don’t afford much in the way of bragging rights. The absence of a microSD card slot doesn’t win any fans, either. Still, the Xperia J looks to be carrying a lightweight instance of Android 4.0 that keeps it reasonably up to date, the battery life is good and the 5-megapixel camera will capture some memories in a pinch. Sony could supposedly have its starter phone on the market as early as September, and for as little as 150 euros ($186) outside of a contract — no doubt the real selling point if it’s at all true, as the cost would be roughly half that of the already budget-minded Xperia U.

Sony quietly outs Xperia SL: dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3, four hues

Sony quietly outs Xperia SL, gifts it with a dualcore 17GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU, four hues

That oft-rumored successor to the Sony Xperia S smartphone, the Xperia SL? Sony’s now officially listing the 4.3-inch GSM device as “coming soon” on its website, along with full details and specs. As it turns out, the initial leaks were correct — the SL is a slight refresh of the S, differentiating itself with an additional duo of color choices (silver and pink), a faster dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (up from a 1.5Ghz processor and Gingerbread). Aside from all that, it’s the same media-focused phone, loaded with the same 720p display and 12.1-megapixel shooter, that we reviewed in March. We can’t say we’re overly excited, but you’ll find more info from Sony at the source link below if you’re interested.

[Thanks, Olmar]

Android Open Source Project targets Sony Xperia S, wants to get experimental

Android Open Source Project targets Sony Xperia S, wants to get experimental

The Android Open Source Project has typically (and understandably) been a very Nexus-focused affair — until now that is. Technical Lead for the AOSP, Jean-Baptiste Queru, announced this week that for a “new challenge” he’d like to target new hardware — and Sony’s Xperia S is the lucky benefactor. The choice of hardware is said to be due to it being a powerful, current device with an unlockable bootloader, with Queru noting that Sony has always been kind to the project. There’s not a lot in the git project right now, but Queru appears keen to rally support from developers to get the ball rolling. Wondering how this might differ from CyanogenMod’s device targets? Where CM might have a focus on stability, Queru believes that AOSP will head in a more experimental “bleeding edge” direction. Sound like something you can get behind? Head on over to the source for more info.

Sony starts pushing Android 4.0 update to Xperia P owners, Xperia U and more coming soon

Sony Xperia P review

Sony has been steadily deploying its Android 4.0 updates, but it’s been leaving some of its newest phones out of the loop. Consider the Xperia P back in the groove: its upgrade is rolling out over the course of a few weeks, starting today. As always, the exact timing will depend on the carrier and country, and some owners may have to download the update the archaic, wired way instead of through the air. Should the Xperia P deployment still leave your device out of the running, Sony keenly points out that the Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola are next on deck to receive a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. About the only question left is when Android 4.1 will reach any Xperia models, although we’re really just thankful to have much of Sony’s current lineup on the same page.

Sony LT25i Tsubasa pops up in benchmarks, may swell the high-speed Xperia ranks

Sony LT25i Tsubasa pops up in benchmarks, may amp up Xperia meidrange

Add another future Sony Xperia model to a rapidly growing pool. The LT25i Tsubasa (not to be confused with the ST25i/Xperia U) has been caught by Tencent in AnTuTu and NenaMark2 tests, seemingly running the same mix of a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, a 720p screen and Android 4.0 that we’ve seen in the upcoming Xperia T (LT30p). So what’s different? There’s rumors of in-cell touch to keep the display thin and vivid, but even the unverified source isn’t certain that it will become a reality. The crew at Xperia Blog also claims that there will be international LTE and HSPA+ models along with China- and Japan-specific editions. Assuming the details are at all consistent with the truth, having the Tsubasa arrive on the scene mostly hints that Sony might be readying a broader speed-up of its roster than we first thought.

Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich confirmed for half a dozen Sony Xperia smartphones from 2011

There was a bit of confusion late last month that concerned the availability of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates being made available to the Xperia smartphones from Sony Mobile which were released in 2011, and glad to know that everything is going on smoothly. The thing is, one must need to learn how to walk before one can run, and here we are with word that six Xperia smartphones from 2011 will be on the receiving end of a new Android 4.0.4 firmware update, and this update will sport the firmware version number of 4.1.B.0.587, where it will replace the current 4.1.B.0.431 which delivered Android 4.0.4 to the 2011 Xperia range.

The half dozen smartphones to fall under this particular “umbrella” would include the Xperia active, Xperia arc, Xperia mini pro, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V and Xperia Pro. It is also widely expected by the industry to see this same firmware arrive across the board for the rest of the 2011 Xperia handsets, save for the Xperia Play, of course.

Sony Xperia tablet press images leak?

Now what you see above has been rumored to be a leaked image of the Sony Xperia tablet, and while the latest leak involves just a trio of images, there is a very important clue which was gleaned from this particular image – it will fall under the purview of the Xperia brand, no doubt about it. Unlike previous tablets from Sony, the “Xperia tablet” that you see here seems to have shelved its wedge shape, although this clearly did not do away with a wedge impression which remains there at the top of the tablet. It will come in two tones, complete with a rear-facing camera that is stashed within the aluminium clad body.

The alleged Xperia tablet’s home screen also shows off the cosmic flow wallpaper which is more or less the most common kind of wallpapers spotted on Xperia smartphones. Could this be a precursor of things to come, perhaps Sony is centralizing the development of tablets and other mobile dvices?

Sony Xperia tablet reappears in new photos, adds a few more details

Image

While most of the intrigue about Sony’s next tablet evaporated in a barrage of leaked slides, a few press renders offer us a closer look at the Tablet S replacement. Proudly emblazoned with the Xperia brand, the tablet steps closer to Sony’s smartphone family, with a texturized backing likely to keep fingertips happy. We’ve included a second picture after the break, showing that a substantial bezel is still part of the design and confirming that we’ll be playing with Android 4.0, if not Google’s very latest OS. XDA-developers has a few more images to show off at the link below.

Sony Xperia GX makes Japan debut today

Sony Xperia GX arrives in Japan stores today

The Xperia GX passed muster at the FCC labs a few weeks back and is filling shelves of NTT DoCoMo stores starting today. If you like your smartphone screens big and high-resolution, you’ll probably be very happy with the Xperia GX‘s 720p 4.6-inch display, wrapped in a curved frame similar to last year’s Xperia Arc. There’s no word on whether the phone will remain a Japan-only exclusive, but Sony is likely to have something new to show off at European trade show, IFA, in only a few weeks. Arguably more of a looker than the Xperia S, perhaps we’ll see a global model — there’s a pentaband 3G radio in this iteration — sidling up next to an Xperia tablet in Germany very soon.

New Sony Xperia T photos bare all, show its ‘Mint’ condition

Sony's Xperia T photos bare all, looks mint

If we didn’t know better, we’d say that Sony was playing some sort of protracted game of hang-man with its Xperia line. S… P… U… and now possibly T? It’s the phone bearing that latest letter in the cryptic message that we see before us today. In fact — thanks to nixanbal.com — we can see it from pretty much every conceivable angle. The S4-powered droid — complete with foldout memory card slot and protruding camera — is tipped to be announced pre-IFA, so we’ll no doubt have the full skinny then. In the meantime head past the break — and then tap the source — to see the minty-phone in all its glory.
