Sony Xperia Masona is the Xperia miro

Sometimes, some companies like to attach code names to yet unreleased pieces of hardware, and for good reason, too. This is to ensure that the particular piece of hardware remains hush hush, and it will also make it easier for the company to manage its secrets – at least until the time comes to reveal it officially, of course. Having said that, the Sony Xperia Masona was spotted in the past, with a couple of UK mobile phone e-tailers (Handtec and Gum Mobile) already listing it, albeit without providing additional details such as pricing and a release date. The only thing stuck to the Xperia Masona? A “New – Coming Soon” statement.

Well, it seems that Sony Mobile’s Harold de Kort has stepped forward to clear some confusion and provide more clues as to what the Xperia Masona is all about. Basically, it is the code name for the upcoming Xperia miro. Will you be picking one up now that you know just exactly what the Xperia Masona/miro is?

Sony Xperia SL shows up in multiple colors, allegedly sports a beefy 1.7GHz processor

Sony’s been under the microscope for all the wrong reasons lately. Today, however, the spotlight’s focusing on the rumored successor of that lovable Xperia S. According to the reliable folks over at ePrice, the upcoming Xperia SL has been tweaked in a couple of ways since its last showing; not only popping up in different (and more subtle) livery, but it’s also received a decent speed bump with the alleged inclusion of a dual-core, 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU — which is slightly different than the 1.5GHz chip previously reported. Either way, this Xperia SL cup will remain half full for the time being, as other useful details like pricing and availability are still widely unknown.

Sony Xperia SL appears in two colors

The Sony Xperia SL has started to show up in a couple of new colors, and this smartphone, also known as the LT26ii if you are a sucker for model numbers, is tipped to oust the current Sony Xperia S, where it will ship with a faster-clocked 1.7GHz dual-core processor alongside the MSM8260 chipset to keep it company. Just what are the two new colors that the Sony Xperia SL come in? We are looking at silver and pink shades that will keep company the existing black and white colors of the Sony Xperia S. There is every chance that the image which you see above could eventually turn out to be a fake, just like what happened in the past, so we will take this with a grain of salt at the moment and hopefully, sometime down the road, something else might turn up unexpectedly to confirm that the Sony Xperia SL will indeed, arrive in a couple more colors that some might love, while others hate.

Sony backpedals on Android 4.1 upgrade statement, is now ‘actively investigating’ all Xperia updates

Sony backpedals on Android 41 upgrade statement, is 'actively investigating' updates for 2011 Xperia devices

Let’s chalk this one up to something being lost in corporate translation. After a UK company rep issued a statement just days ago confirming the lack of an Android 4.1 upgrade path for certain 2011 Xperia handsets, Sony’s delicately backtracking and claiming that public info was made “in error.” While this official retraction may soothe previously irate owners’ concerns, it’s still not an outright commitment to Jelly Bean, as the company’s only now pledging to “actively [investigate]… upgrades for all devices” — a carefully worded PR promise par excellence. To the Japanese electronics giant’s credit, it has been pretty transparent and diligent about delivering ICS updates to its elder smartphone progeny, so we have plenty of reason to remain cautiously optimistic Google’s newest OS will make the transition, too.

Sony Xperia advance hits the FCC

A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, and a smartphone by any other name would just be…er, as smart? I am not quite sure, but if you do follow what Sony Mobile offers closely ever since they broke off from the Sony Ericsson partnership, here we are with their latest candidate to go through the hallowed halls of the FCC – the Sony Xperia advance. It is also known as the ST27a if model numbers are your thing, while those living in North American would have realized that it has already undergone the FCC’s rigorous testing procedures under the guise of the Sony Xperia go.

The Sony Xperia go did hit several markets already, but Sony Mobile has largely remained silent as to when the Xperia advance will arrive Stateside as well as in Canada. One thing’s for sure – to see it pass through the FCC would probably be a pretty good indicator as to the actual release date. Those who are thinking or mulling over their decision as to whether to purchase a new handset from Sony, you might want to consider the Sony Xperia advance.

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides: Surface-style keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides Surfacestyle keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony’s next-generation tablet appears to have leaked on internal slides spotted by German news site, Mobiflip. In short, it’s thinner and lighter than the Tablet S, while internal specifications also trump it, including a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0 (“or later”), 3G connectivity and three storage options; 16, 32 and 64GB. The whole tablet follows the same folded magazine design of Sony’s existing tablet, is splashproof and houses a 6,000mAh battery that the slides suggest will manage 10 hours of WiFi-based web browsing. There’s even some tentative pricing, with the different-sized models marked up at $450, $550 and $650, respectively. The pictures also cover Sony’s plans to add a lightweight keyboard to its next tablet, similar to Microsoft’s Surface plans, but with some Smart Cover-esque kickstand skills thrown in for good measure. We’ve added a shot of the keyboard cover after the break, but you can take a tour of the rest of the slides — which include a raft of accessories and docks — at the source link below.

Update: We’ve been in touch with a Sony spokesperson, who had “no comment at this stage.” We may have to wait until next month, when European trade show IFA kicks off — with Sony in attendance — until we hear anything more concrete.

Sony Xperia J possibly spotted, may court entry-level fashionistas

Sony Xperia J possibly spotted, may court entrylevel fashionistas

That didn’t take long. We’ve only known about the Sony Xperia J and its reported ST26i codename for a short while, but ePrice has already given the purported starter smartphone the full photo tour. From cursory looks and specifications, the J will slot neatly between the Xperia miro and tipo at the start of the line and the small but potent Xperia U: while it’s not believed to be quite as fast or iconic as the dual-core U, the single-core, 1GHz J could still be faster than its tiniest cousins and strive for some chic with a brightly colored back wrapped around a 4-inch display. The real highlight may simply be an Xperia that ships with Android 4.0 from the get-go instead of requiring yet another upgrade merry-go-round. When the Xperia J shows is still up in the air, despite presumptions of an appearance at IFA; however, we won’t be surprised if the J appears side-by-side with the Mint when it’s officially ready for a close-up.

Sony Mobile says no to physical QWERTY keyboards on future Xperia handsets

Well, it has been more or less confirmed that Sony will not be offering the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Xperia smartphones which were released in the year 2011, and here we are with word that Sony will not be including a physical QWERTY keyboard into their Xperia smartphones for the year ahead. I guess that means we are talking about a full touchscreen experience from now on, and those who have always wanted to enjoy a physical QWERTY keyboard will most probably have to learn to live with a pure touchscreen display experience.

This bit of news hailed came from John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, who did spend some time giving answers to questions on Facebook. Sony claimed that the reason why they would not include a physical QWERTY keyboard is because “the market seems to prefer large touch screens to keyboards at the moment so unfortunately we don’t have any current plans to release an Xperia with a keyboard.”

Sony 2011 Xperia phones not getting Jelly Bean update?

Jelly Bean arc SIf you own a Sony Xperia phone from the year 2011, it looks like you won’t be receiving the latest version of Android – at least through official  channels. According to reports online, Sony UK has mentioned on its Facebook page (in reply to a comment) that the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini will not receive the Android 4.1 update. Since the arc S has the highest specs when compared to the other phones in the 2011 Xperia line up, it looks like all of them won’t be getting the update as well.

However, there is a possibility of Sony changing its mind when it comes to pushing out the update, so we’ll just have to wait and see. After all, it released updates for the Xperia X10 when enough people complained about being stuck on Android 1.6. Maybe the same thing will happen here. If not, users will just have to stick with Ice Cream Sandwich or get a custom ROM on their phones for Jelly Bean goodness.
