Dell XPS 12 Windows 8 convertible priced at $1,199 and up, ships this month with pre-orders starting today

Well, that’s a form factor you don’t see that often. Of all the Windows 8 PCs we’ve seen so far, the Dell XPS 12 is tough to forget, if only because it’s the only one whose screen flips inside the hinge like an easel. We already got hands-on at IFA last month, but now we’re learning some key details — you know, like pricing and availability. Dell just announced that it will go up for pre-order today, starting at $1,199. (It will ship October 26th, the day Windows 8 launches.) That’s a princely sum indeed compared to some of the other Windows 8 ultraportables we’ve seen, but it’s important to remember that this runs not on an Atom processor, but an Ultrabook-grade CPU. And while you might assume that 12.5-inch display makes do with 1,366 x 768 resolution, it’s actually a dense 1080p panel. Hopefully we’ll get to review a final unit soon, but in the meantime feast yourself on a fresh round of hands-on shots below.

Dell XPS Duo 12: Is it an Ultrabook or a tablet?

Is it an Ultrabook? Is it a tablet? To answer the question, this is no supercomputer, but rather, the Dell XPS Duo 12 is said to be both, depending on the situation and context that you are in. Sporting a novel and elegant flip hinge touchscreen display which was specially designed to take advantage of the Windows 8 operating system that has touch interaction on the menu, there is also a keyboard to make it jive with the notebook/Ultrabook crowd who want to get some serious work done while they are on the move.

Thanks to the innovative flip hinge design, one is able to make the transition from laptop to tablet to laptop in a jiffy, while the Full HD display is able to deliver up to 97% more pixels compared to your regular HD display. Using machined aluminum and carbon fiber as the main materials of choice for its chassis, it is well complemented by Corning Gorilla Glass for that added touch durability without weighing it down. As with the Dell XPS 10, the Dell XPS Duo 12 will also be available to the masses when Windows 8 arrives on the market at the end of October. No pricing details have been announced yet, but I wonder just how tough the hinge can last over the years. Image courtesy of CNET. [Press Release]
