Yelp Adds Video to Their Reviews

Yelp to add videoYelp announced today that people who wish to post reviews on their site will be able to add up to 12 seconds of video. They have allowed users to post pictures with their reviews but the addition of video will allow the reader to experience the atmosphere of the business.

Yelp already has a plan to make sure that all the videos are screened prior to them being added to the site. This screening process will make sure that no unsuitable videos are posted and it will allow the most useful videos to move to the top of the review.

This new feature is expected to roll out in early June to their “elite users” prior to it becoming available to everyone else a little later in the year. They have over 23,000 pictures uploaded to the site every day, this new feature looks like a great addition.

Oh Good, Yelp Now Suggests Businesses Based on Emoji

Emoji is strangely useful, whether you’re recapping wildly popular TV shows or sending your friend a smiling pile of poo when real words fail you. Until now, this lexicon was probably inscrutable to machines. Those days are over: Yelp’s mobile app now suggests businesses when you type tiny pictures in the search bar.

Yahoo Announces Partnership With Yelp To Improve Local Search

A few weeks back it was rumored that Yahoo is going to partner up with Yelp in order to bolster its search product. That rumor has turned out to be true. The best restaurant in the USA is a tiny shack in Hawaii

Were you expecting to see a Michelin Star restaurant? Something like Per Se? Certainly a restaurant where fine dining doesn’t even begin to describe the orgasmic experience, right? Like Alinea? Nope. Those excellent restaurants—and others of their kind—are not the best restaurant in the USA according to Yelp. That honor would go to a small shack in Hawaii called Da Poke Shack. You could eat there for less than 10 bucks.

Yahoo Taps Into Yelp To Improve Local Search [Report]

Even though Yahoo went through several major changes last year, the company’s recent quarterly earnings report failed to impress investors. Yahoo needs to work on improving its products and ensure that they don’t face downtime after a few weeks. Moreover, the company needs to improve its existing services that are already competing in highly contested niches. Take Yahoo search for example, its up against the likes of Google and Bing. The company knows that, which is why it has reportedly partnered up with Yelp to improve local search. This according to The Wall Street Journal, which claims to have heard from a person who attended the meeting in which CEO Marissa Mayer unveiled the new partnership.

U.S. Court Rules Yelp Must Identify Anonymous Reviewers

U.S. Court Rules Yelp Must Identify Anonymous Reviewers

There’s a reason why online commenting and reviewing systems usually have the option to post anonymously. Not everyone wants to write a bad review or leave a scathing comment using their own name, some choose to hide behind a curtain to vent while not fearing that the blowback might somehow end up affecting them offline. A Virginia court has complicated matters for Yelp, it has ruled that the popular review and discovery website must reveal the identity of users who leave negative reviews.

Yelp iPhone app now lets you post reviews from within, support coming soon to Android

Yelp iPhone app now lets you post reviews from within, support coming soon to Android

Here’s something that may surprise you: yesterday, Yelp users couldn’t actually post reviews from within the company’s iPhone app. Wild, right? Today’s update, however, changes that, bringing it more in line with rival Foursquare. The revised iOS app, which should be hitting the App Store momentarily, will bring the feature to all users across 22 countries, and we’re told that the new button for reviews will appear where the “Tips” button has sat in the past. Interestingly, Yelp intends to still hold some power over what you write — if your “review” is deemed too brief, it could end up as a tip; thankfully, users can always go back later, add a bit more detail and have it ported over to the review side. Just remember: you can totally get sued for posting negative reviews. Womp, womp.

Yelp gobbles up SeatMe, an emerging competitor to OpenTable

Yelp gobbles up SeatMe, a competitor to OpenTable

Yelp just made its partnership with OpenTable very, very awkward with the announcement that it’ll purchase a competing reservation service known as SeatMe for $12.7 million. The 16-person operation, based in San Francisco, runs a web and app platform that focuses on restaurants and nightlife activities. According to TechCrunch, SeatMe sent an email to its current customers in the wake of the announcement, with a promise that the service will continue operation. Meanwhile, Yelp is positioning the acquisition as a compliment to its existing offerings, which suggests that the company may bide its time before re-evaluating its partnership with OpenTable. If anything, it looks like Yelp’s getting very serious about reservations and appointment bookings, and that could mean a more convenient future for you.
