Clockwork is a Giant K’nex Ball Machine

Look at this crazy K’Nex machine. It took 8 months to create, has over 450 feet of track and it includes over 40,000 K’Nex pieces, 8 motors, 5 lifts, 21 distinct paths, and a computer-controlled crane. That’s insane.

This crazy contraption is called “Clockwork,” a giant K’Nex ball machine created by YouTube user austron. This is his fifth major ball machine and their largest, most complex K’Nex structure.

Check the video. It’s a wild ride that takes a full 5 minutes! It’s insane to me that people create this stuff. I just wish I had the talent to make a massive machine like this. I don’t know about you, but I could watch it do it’s thing all day long.

YouTube Launches Official iPhone App

I bet many iPhone users spend a lot of time streaming video from YouTube on their smartphones when they have time to kill. The iPhone has had native support for YouTube since day one, but thanks to its ongoing war with Google, Apple announced not too long ago that it would be discontinuing support for YouTube natively with iOS 6 (and more than likely with the iPhone 5). YouTube has launched their own solution to that problem. As of today, YouTube has announced the launch of its official iPhone and iPod Touch YouTube app.

The app can be downloaded on the App Store right now and brings new features that iPhone users haven’t had in the past. First off, the new app allows access to tens of thousands of additional videos since many publishers had restricted playback to when they could monetize their content. Ironically, Apple’s elimination of the built-in YouTube app may actually make Google much more money, now that the app can support pre-roll advertising. Early reviews state that the new app is faster than the Apple bundled app, which hasn’t been updated in a very long time.

In addition, the app also has a channel guide accessed by swiping a finger on the left edge of the screen. The channel guide offers users direct access to all their subscribed channels on YouTube. The app also has new search tools to give video suggestions as you type and allows users to flip through related videos, comments, and more info while watching a video. The app also allows users to share videos they find via Google+, twitter, Facebook, text messages, and e-mail.

YouTube launches new iPhone and iPod Touch app

YouTube has announced that it is launching a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch on the Apple App Store as of today. YouTube says of the new app was built by its engineers to give iPhone and iPod touch users the best mobile experience possible. The new app promises to bring users a huge amount of new videos to watch.

The app has a new YouTube channel guide access by swiping a finger from on the left edge of the screen revealing a guide with your subscribed channels. The new channel guide gives users instant access to everything they are subscribed to. The updated app also has new ways to share videos you like with people.

Videos can now be shared on Google+, Facebook, twitter, e-mail, and text message. YouTube says that it’s working on an optimized version of the app for the iPad that will be offered in the coming months. There are no hard details on the iPad version of the app offered at this time.

The download is 7.5 MB in size and is available for just about every language out there. The new app supports iOS 4.3 and later, and is said to support iOS 6 as well. YouTube also noted that users of its mobile apps generate 1 billion mobile views each day.

Google introduces new YouTube app for iOS

Heads up YouTubers on iOS, it seems like Google has officially released a new YouTube app for iOS. This YouTube has  been designed to be more friendly to use and just like Google, it will come with search suggestions why you type, allowing you to get to your videos faster. Google has released the app for the iPhone first, but rest assured iPad users as the YouTube app for your tablet is expected to be made available in the “coming months” – seems a bit long but we guess it’s better than nothing, right? Anyway if you’d like to check out the new YouTube app for your iPhone (or maybe even on your iPad if you don’t mind the slightly weird dimensions), head on over to the iTunes App Store for the download.

Google Fights Back: Official YouTube for iOS Is Here [YouTube]

Last month, Apple yanked the YouTube app that’d been collecting mold on your iPhone since 2007. On the one hand, nobody will miss it in iOS 6, because it was terrible. On the other, YouTube. But fret not: it’s back. More »

YouTube releases standalone app for iOS, tablet-tailored version in the works

YouTube releases standalone app for iOS, tablettailored version in the works

There was much (some?) tearing of clothes and gnashing of teeth when Apple pulled its YouTube app from iOS 6. That pain was lessened by Google’s promise of a standalone app to replace it, and now Big G’s version has arrived, ready to be installed on the legions of new iPhones to come. YouTube’s touting the app’s fresh channel guide — that lets users swipe from left to right to reveal a screen with easy access to their channel subscriptions — and better search features as the main attractions of the new software. Oh, and for folks with ten-inch Apple screens, YouTube has assured us that its engineers are back in the lab cooking up an iPad-specific version set to show up “in the coming months.” Until then, the phone version will have to suffice, and you can grab it at the iTunes source link below.

Now that the Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps show in London is well behind us, it’s time for this summer’s Paralympics to get started — in fact, they’ve been underway since this past Wednesday, August 29th. But in case you’ve been missing out on all the action due to shortage of viewing options, YouTube just announced it’ll be streaming over 500 hours of live competitions to folks in the US of A and Canada. The real-time streams are being brought to you via the ParalympicSportsTV channel, which will also offer more than 1000 hours of on-demand content, such as daily highlights, behind-the-scenes footage and athlete interviews. The only thing left to do now is grab some popcorn and hope your country of choice leads that glorious medal count — so far, it’s China with the celebrated number one spot.
