YouTube's Elections Hub is a onestop channel for the latest US political happenings

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s election year in the US of A. And while we already have a slight idea of which political party your beloved neighbors prefer, why not have an all-inclusive video hub to keep you updated with the latest action taking place on the road toward America’s historical White House. Here’s where YouTube comes in. The Google-owned service announced earlier today the creation of its Elections Hub, which it’s dubbing as the “one-stop channel for key political moments” happening now and all the way until the final US election day on the 6th of November. Naturally, the social vid giant’s teamed up with some of the biggest outfits around to bring live and on-demand content to the Elections 2012 channel, including ABC News, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and, for the spanish-speaking crowd, Univision. Regardless of who’s landing your worthy, priceless vote, this should be great corner of the internet to keep you in the loop during this year’s Stateside political battle.

Airtime testing new video post features, improved buddy list

Airtime testing new video post features, improved buddy list

Remember Airtime, the Facebook-integrated video calling / media sharing service with a Chatroulette flavor? Well if not, we don’t blame you — usage stats suggest it hasn’t quite taken off, but maybe the new features it’s testing will secure a few more fans. No longer is the service restricted to the here and now, as the major change is all about video posts. Use Airtime to record a message and you can post it to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or via a traditional email to get the conversation started. Friends can then reply to your message through Airtime with a video post of their own, and so on. Its buddy list has also been given a little love, so now it shows friends as online, idle or offline, and details your interaction timeline. Whether the features are enough to inspire wider uptake is questionable, but for the few that actively use Airtime, the updates are out in the wild now on a “limited public release.”

YouTube App for PS3 arrives

You know something, it is rather hard to believe that there has yet to be a native YouTube app for the PS3 platform – at least, not until this morning. Google releases native YouTube app for PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3 owners have been able to access YouTube on their consoles for some time, but the experience was a little messy, to say the least. Google has rolled out a new app for the PlayStation 3 today, bringing with it a much needed graphical makeover along with improved search capabilities. Users will be able to download the native app for free from the PlayStation Store right this minute.

Just like the YouTube experience on desktop and laptops, users will see instant results as they start typing search queries, cutting down on unnecessary typing and getting users to their videos faster than before. HD video playback is also supported, although it’s not clear right now what resolutions the app supports. The PlayStation 3 is more than capable of displaying 1080p, but the worst case scenario will still see you watching 720p videos.

Video subscriptions can be accessed through the app as well, provided you’ve signed in using your Google or YouTube ID. The most important feature of all, however, is that you can control the app directly from your iOS or Android device. That should help users avoid using the awkward method of moving the onscreen cursor with the DualShock controller.

Google says the app should be rolling out to the North American store starting from today, and other countries will also soon see the app. Head over to the “My Channels” section in the PlayStation Store to see if you have access, otherwise sit tight for now.

YouTube’s new app for the PlayStation 3 rolling out, allows remote control from smartphones

YouTube's new app for the PlayStation 3 rolling out, brings remote control from smartphones

While YouTube has always enjoyed support on Sony’s PlayStation 3 thanks to the console’s Flash-enabled browser and even offered a YouTube XL layout for connected devices, now it’s rolling out a new app to make the video experience even better (and, no doubt, compete with the experience unveiled late last year on the Xbox 360). The app has an improved search with suggestions and instant results while users type, the ability to pull in a user’s subscribed channels and it allows for remote control from the YouTube app on your smartphone after a simple pairing process (shown in a screenshot after the break.) According to the official blog it should be arriving in North America now, check under the My Channels section in the PS3 store to download the free app and give it a shot.

Update: The new app should be available in the PlayStation store now (if you’re in the US.) There’s no word on when it will arrive in other regions, however Canadians can enjoy the Crackle app that popped up today and everyone can give Madden 2013 a shot.

Google’s Giving YouTube a Pass With Its New Piracy Provisions (Updated) [YouTube]

DIRECTV updates iPad app, HR34 DVR with tktkt

DirecTV has quietly updated both its iPad app and HR34 DVR with a variety of new features for Satellite-loving customers. The application will now resume from where you left off, comes with a much improved search function and best of all, a direct line into the company’s support forums. Meanwhile, the HR34 swallowed a software package that included Pandora, a YouTube landing page and more readable closed captions amongst a raft of other nips and tucks. The former will be available through the app store, while the latter should have arrived on your box overnight, well before you start on that CSI marathon.

Excel music video blows the mind away

Expressing yourself through Microsoft Excel, I guess this would be the ultimate – making an entire music video out of Microsoft Excel, as you can view in the YouTube video above. Touting a stop-motion animation video, it shows off the creative possibilities of Excel, an app which has more or less maintained its image of being a spreadsheet – nothing more, nothing less. In fact, the music video that you see above took under 5 hours to complete, algorithms, formulas and all. Since a picture speaks a thousand words, and each second of this Excel-made video consists of many frames, you can just imagine the kind of “message” that such a video conveys to the viewer. I do hope that more and more people would challenge themselves and come up with their very own rendition of an Excel video.
