ZTE’s 5-inch 1080p Grand S leaked, teased and confirmed for CES debut

ZTE Grand S product shot leaked ahead of CES debut

Earlier today a kind anonymous tipster shared the above product shot of a ZTE Z753, which is allegedly the Chinese manufacturer’s contribution to the ever-growing list of five-inch 1080p devices — including those from HTC, Sharp, Oppo and eventually Nubia, Huawei, Lenovo plus Sony. Conveniently, ZTE’s also been teasing its upcoming Grand S flagship on Sina Weibo ahead of its CES debut, and we’ve been able to confirm that this is indeed the aforementioned Z753 — not that we don’t already know the Grand S’ main selling points thanks to a brief description on CES’ website: “the world’s thinnest for 5 inch FHD smartphones.” There isn’t much information about the guts at this point, but we do know that the phone will feature a unibody design, along with a slight bump around the off-center camera on the back. Until we make it to CES next month, you can see more in the official sketches after the break, courtesy of ZTE’s Sina Weibo account.

ZTE Nubia Z5 Leaked With Full Frontal Shots

There is nothing quite like a leak to get the Internet abuzz with activity, especially when it comes to the world of new hardware. Well, here is the Nubia Z5 from ZTE that has just leaked, no thanks to the ZTE Nubia’s PR manager. The shot that is made available is what you see on the right, sporting a full frontal image, where it has been touted to be a high end device to go up against the likes of the HTC Droid DNA (also known as the HTC J Butterfly in Japan), the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that has done incredibly well despite its size, and the iPhone 5 in the China market.

Just what kind of specifications does it pack underneath the hood? Well, we are looking at a 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 5” Full HD display with an incredible 440ppi pixel density, 2GB RAM, a 13-megapixel shooter at the back and dual speakers for that added thump whenever you watch movies or listen to music, all crammed into a body that measures 7.6mm thin. Tipped to hit China next week, will it ever arrive elsewhere in the world?

ZTE’s Nubia Z5 turns to face the camera in ‘leaked’ photo

ZTE's Nubia Z5 turns to face the camera in 'leaked' photo

We already got a look at the rear of the latest China-bound smartphone from ZTE, but now the Nubia Z5 has turned around to shown us its face. The image was apparently “leaked” on Chinese social network Weibo by the an enthusiastic PR manager at the firm. Things are still pretty sparse on the specification front, but — all things going according to plan — that 5-inch screen and italian design will be hiding quad-core internals and at least 13 megapixels of camera power. With the official reveal tipped for next week, though, it shouldn’t be too long until we’re seeing a whole lot more of it. Leaked or otherwise.

IDC: Apple slipped to sixth in China smartphone share in Q3, Samsung and locals sat on top

IDC Apple slipped to sixth in China smartphone share in Q3, Samsung and locals sat on top

The Chinese smartphone market is a tough nut to crack given its sensitivity to prices and a slew of strong domestic brands. IDC estimates suggest Apple may have learned this the hard way during the third quarter of this year: it slipped from fourth place in local market share during the second quarter to sixth. Samsung kept out in front, but everyone else who knocked Apple down a couple of pegs was from the neighborhood, starting with second-place Lenovo followed by Coolpad, ZTE and Huawei. Price and wider availability no doubt played a part in shifting further towards a (mostly) Android-based field, although the period may have also exacerbated the pre-update lull in sales that Apple often faces — while those in some countries were picking up an iPhone 5 in September, China won’t have its turn until December 14th. Fourth quarter results won’t completely reverse the state of affairs, but they could easily be worth watching.

Chinese state media accuses Cisco of helping US spies, sees turnabout as fair play

China state media accuses Cisco of helping US spies, says turnabout is fair play

We get the impression China isn’t very happy that the names of Huawei and ZTE are being dragged through the mud in the US. Almost directly mirroring some American stances, state-backed Chinese media outlets such as China Economy & Informatization and People’s Daily are raising alarm bells over Cisco’s presence in a large amount of local network infrastructure, alleging that it’s a potential backdoor for espionage; CE&I goes so far as to cite purported experts insisting that the US government could take over Chinese communications in a crisis. China Unicom is acting on the threat by phasing out Cisco gear, the magazine says. Other allegations point to 72 members of Congress possibly being influenced by their Cisco shares and the ever-controversial Patriot Act aiding any nefarious plans. Given the publications’ ultimate benefactors, the chances of politics skewing the agenda are high — although the collective stance underscores just how much tension has surfaced ever since Chinese tech giants got the evil eye.

Swisscom rolls out first LTE in Switzerland on November 29th

Swisscom rolls out first LTE in Switzerland on November 29th

The European LTE landscape is unfortunately a fragmented one that favors large countries with large carriers. We can chalk up at least one victory for the smaller nation states, however: Switzerland is getting its first LTE network on November 29th. The country’s main provider, Swisscom, is launching initial 4G coverage in 26 cities and regions using the LTE-equipped HTC One X (One XL abroad), quickly following up with the early December availability of the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II and Nokia Lumia 920. A Huawei USB stick and a ZTE hotspot will also be on tap. Customers won’t need to spring for a new plan to use the new network on a basic level, although Swisscom’s uncommon speed-based phone plans mean they’ll be paying a stiff 169 francs ($181) per month to max out the 4G network. We imagine at least some will bite if it means speedy data in Zurich.

[Thanks, Joël]

ZTE unveils the smallest 4G LTE datacard available

ZTE has announced the launch of its MF823, a small dongle it touts as the smallest 4G LTE data card currently available. The little white unit has already launched in Kazakhstan, of all places, and is heading for Europe and Asia “soon.” The press release doesn’t state a price, but if similar offerings from the company are any indication, you’ll likely be looking at $200+ for the unit.

The MF823′s user interface is operated via the Web, and, according to the press release, is compatible with Windows 8, Windows XP, Mac OS X and “all major operating systems.” The device supports IPv6, GPRS/GSM, UMTS-HSPA+, and LTE-FDD. The LTE-FDD supported download and upload speeds are 100Mbps/dl and 50Mbps/ul, while the UMTS-HSPA+ supported speeds are 42Mbps/dl and 5.76Mbps/ul.

The MF823 dongle uses 30-percent less energy than its first-gen counterpart. Says ZTE, the device has the “lowest working temperature in the industry,” so it’ll feel cool to the touch even after prolonged periods of use. In addition, the unit has improved radiating properties, and has been optimized for a combo of high bandwidth/high communication rates and low delays.

In addition to boasting having launched the world’s smallest 4G LTE USB modem, ZTE also has claims to fame in other related areas. Earlier in 2012, the Chinese company unveiled the first multi-standard USB modem available. Also, says the press release, ZTE was the first mainland Chinese vendor to make available a 4G LTE smartphone.

ZTE N880E Gets Android 4.2 Jelly Bean Update

In July this year, the ZTE N880E was originally announced to be the first smartphone from China-centric ZTE to feature the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. Well, it seems that nearly half a year later, the ZTE N880E is back in the limelight – this time around, with ZTE announcing that this bad boy will be getting yet another operating system update, and we are talking about the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean version, of course. Having said that, this would mean that the ZTE N880E is the first Chinese company to deliver the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system onto a smartphone.

The rest of the world will be unable to check out just what the ZTE N880E is capable of delivering, as it is a handset that remains exclusive only in China, selling more than a million units since its debut. Just to recap, the ZTE N880E comes with a 4” WVGA display, a 3-megapixel camera at the back, a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7627A processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, and a 1650 mAh battery to keep things going. ZTE Apache 8-Core Smartphone In The Pipeline?

So you think that your smartphone has it good with all four cores running underneath the hood, don’t you? What is next on the books – half a dozen cores? Apparently not, as we have word on the street that ZTE of China has an Apache 8-core smartphone that comes complete with a 28nm ARM15 Mediatek chip under the hood, and this powerhouse of a chipset looks set to debut sometime next year.

No idea on whether 8-cores are going to have smartphone manufacturers come knocking on ZTE’s door, hoping to get a slice of 8-core action, as Huawei’s quad-core offerings which were announced earlier this year did not really make that much of an impact. I guess it is a game of patience this time around, where we will need to adopt the wait-and-see attitude before counting ZTE’s efforts to be a dud. For the sake of whichever smartphone that will carry this rumored chipset, hopefully the battery has the kind of capacity required to power all eight cores throughout the working day without running out of juice by lunch time.
