The United States is changing. Latinos will soon outnumber Anglos in California. Politicians and pundits who once did their best to stand in the way of what they derisively called “amnesty” now support a pathway to citizenship for the country’s estimated 11.1 million undocumented immigrants, in order to curry favor with the increasingly powerful Latino vote.

Many people still fear the growth of the Latino population, however. During a debate over a proposal to keep undocumented immigrants from paying in-state tuition at Kansas colleges, state Rep. Allan Rothlisberg (R-Grandview Plaza) went off on a rant about drug cartels and railed against the Spanish option on automated phone menus. Boston columnist Jeff Jacoby slammed Gabriel Gomez for using a few sentences in Spanish during his English-language message announcing his candidacy for a U.S. Senate seat.
