A380 Blowout Blamed on Design Flaw, Material

Qanatas CEO Alan Joyce thinks he knows what caused this week’s
blowout of an Airbus A380 engine
–a design flaw with one of the plane’s Rolls-Royce
engines.

“We believe this is probably most likely a material failure
or some type of design issue,” the executive told the press. “We
don’t believe this is related to maintenance in any way.”

One of the plane’s four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines blew
out briefly after taking off from Signapore on the way to Sydney.
The plane shed pieces of metal and was ultimately forced to make an emergency
landing.
